Front door open of the HP ProLiant N36L

Looking at the innards of the Hewlett-Packard N36L once you open the door. HP gets a gold star for spartan yet fully-functional design.

Torx screws for disks are screwed into the door (along the bottom edge). The door also conveniently stores a Torx screwdriver, which is the only tool you'll need to work with this chassis.

Easily accessible (see the photo of the mainboard) are an internal USB 2.0 port and the chassis' four SATA disk bays. Each disk is held in a disk caddy which locks in-place with a plastic lever.

If you're looking for more information, I've both a hardware review and software review of the N36L.

I'm trying to create a set of pix that print well - but in a few instances, due to bad admin (forgetting to use tags, not placing pix in sets), I am unable to find the pix on my stream, only on my hard drive. I am going to re-upload those pix I have misplaced.... Apologies if you have seen these before.

Apologies also to those whose textures I have used, but info on the texture is with the original - which I can't find. The seagulls were also from elsewhere. I suspect they were a starter image. I'm sorry about the lack of crediting.

Taken for World Pinhole Photography Day 24th April 2011 on the Holga 120 WPC. This is a plastic panoramic pinhole camera with an F -stop of approx 155. You get six images from a 120 roll of film. Film was Fuji 400 and exposure was around 12 seconds. This is the one I set up on the WPPD offical site aas my favourite of the day. www.pinholeday.org/gallery/2011/index.php?id=1561&Cou...

I don't have a ringflash but with Esther, i wanted to get that strong hard light parallel to the optical plane so that no shadows exist, diference in luminosity are only due to the shape of ther body.

I placed the 70cm beauty dish touching the camera on a tripod, exactly co-axial and then trigger, of course i couldn't look at the picture through the lense as the flash was right behind.

American Pie Reunion, Harry's Cafe de Wheels Sydney, Woolloomooloo
Photography Eva Rinaldi

Earlier this morning in Sin City Sydney - outside the famous Harry's Cafe de Wheels to be precise, the cast of 'American Reunion' (better known as 'American Pie') congregated to help promote the Australian release of the latest instalment of their movie.
Fans and media gathered and most agreed that it was a breath of fresh air to have a movie premiere outside in such nice and hip surroundings, rather than at a cinema, which is the norm.

It was a marketing masterstroke to team up the 'American Pie' film franchise with Harry's Cafe de Wheels (which is Australia's most famous and respected meat pie brand... since 1945). Harry's pies are 100% pure beef. Harry's director Michael Hannah was on hand also to inform, educate and entertain the well behaved media pack, and kindly posed for a few photos while we waited for the Hollywood movie stars.

Some of the Pie cast has been "down under" before. Pie actress Tara Reid has experienced Australia before and got to know Australian advertising industry legend John Singleton quite well a few years ago thanks to Singo's Magic Millions racing carnival on Australia's Gold Coast, but we didn't see Mr Singleton today so we suspect "Singo" is currently in a relationship.

'Pie' stars including Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Tara Reid arrived in black limos before checking out Harry's and posing for photographs, with a couple of the lad's even taking in a few bites of pie with compliments like "f*ing beautiful" coming thick and fast.

'American Reunion' has been described by a number of media agencies and film critics as the "raunchiest" since the the original 1990s flick.

Public thank you to the great folks at Universal Pictures who were so helpful today, as well as to Michael and the team at Harry's who gave us two cool t-shirts.

We look forward to our next bite of pie, be it Australian or Americans - whatever comes first.

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

Best! Cat Tree! Evar!
buy photo
Bought this directly from the manufacturer. Suggested retail 9, and honestly... it's worth it.

Paid 9 + free shipping (although UPS was a bit of an adventure). Hands down, the best cat tree we've ever owned, Easy to put together, PLUSH, tons of sisal scratching post area, and a variety of levels and heights for the girls to enjoy. It's stable enough that it's stands on it's own with the girls running up and down it's whole height and wrestling on it.

They use every bit of it all day long, even the parts we looked at in the photo and thought I don't know.... Good exercise for them. We looked in lots the local stores and for 0 we couldn't find one HALF as sweet as this one, and we'd have to lug it home ourselves.

Petrified Wood
buy photo
We bought this at a rock shop in Moab, Utah. There's quite a bit of petrified wood in national and state parks in Utah and Arizona. Based on the price they sell it for in rock shops, it must be quite valuable. Pretty stuff, and I was happy to buy it.

I lit this with two Strobie 130's in softbox, placed on either side of the subject at about a 45 degree angle. I wanted side light to show the textures. The speedlights were in manual mode and I adjusted the output of each one independently until I got the look I wanted. They were triggered by Tiny Triggers from scottrobertstudio.com

Other pictures taken during our Red Rock Country trip can be seen here. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157631740697332/...

Other pictures I've taken of our rocks can be seen in my Rocks set www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157631898864615/. In the set description, I emphasize how relatively (it is photography, after all) inexpensive and easy it is to use off camera flash to light things. I also list a good resource that will help you in learning how to do this. I've only been using off camera flash for a little less than one year. It ain't that hard.

Like most images, it looks best when viewed large. Press "L" if you'd like to see it in that enlightened manner.

Weight Loss 20X6

i bought new shirts today, which is not particularly exciting except that today i was able to buy and wear size XL shirts, which i haven't done since i was a senior in high school exactly 10 years ago. these are a little snug yet, but not so much that i wouldn't be able to wear them to work.

last year around this time, i had lost 8 inches. now i'm up to 14, and the total goal is between 20 and 22. on new year's eve i'll post another pic of my belts so you can see the difference between last year and this year.

in roughly another year i'll have -- to quote the stupid bowflex commercial -- "the body i've always wanted." already i have far more muscle tone and a better posture than i had in high school, even though i weighed less then. back then i was running up and down stairs all day long and strength training every other day, so that's a much different type of body than what i'm getting now. more muscle mass, but less tone and no awareness of how to carry myself. my current plan is the same as it's been for a year and a half -- 15-20 minute hatha yoga practice every morning, corpse pose every night before bed to maximize sleep quality, getting enough water, and eating manageable portions of whatever i want.

Hey everybody! After a long time I am back uploading some photograph. Why was I somewhere else? Well check out the news:

Preps for a Training DVD
Over the last month til today I have been preparing stuff for DVD I am gonna revord with the team of Video2Brain. So I will be in Austria for 2 weeks since June 27th. In the DVD I will teach about photography basics (but I don't know when it will come out).

Shooting People
In the last half year I concentrated much about shooting people. That means weddings, , my little girl Enna and Friends - and I made some significant progress in it. Landscapes hat to wait ;) And of course I am always busy with my blog about learning photography. .

Question Of Style
I had the plan of only uploading images in format of 6x6 (1x1) and mostly in b/w but after trying it out on every image I shot I am shure I will not do this forever. It is a good way to enhance some images but not EVERYone. Right now I feel alot more: Freedom.

So that's much news, isn't it? Cheers!

It's dinosaur week on the Flickr stream!

My dinosaur period followed swiftly on from my pig period, and followed a similar pattern: a monomaniacal focus on the subject, resulting in hundreds of drawings and several prints, each one improving on the last, hopefully.

I don't want to brag, but I'm a huge fan of cross-hatching, and I couldn't help but notice, as I was preparing to scan this print, that there's some damn fine cross-hatching going on in the background, there. (Check it out at the largest size if you're a fan of that sort of thing, too.)

It's in the Etsy store as well.

The Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster, which is almost always referred to as Westminster Abbey, is a mainly Gothic church, on the scale of a cathedral (and indeed often considered one). It is the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English monarchs.

Legend has it that a shrine was first founded in 616 on the present site, then known as Thorn Ey (Thorn Island) after a fisherman on the River Thames saw a vision of Saint Peter. In the 960s or early 970s Saint Dunstan, assisted by King Edgar planted a community of Benedictine monks here. The stone Abbey was built around 1045–1050 by King Edward the Confessor, who had selected the site for his burial, and was consecrated on December 28, 1065, immediately before the Confessor's funeral. It was the site of the last Saxon coronation of his successor King Harold. The Abbot and learned monks, with close proximity to the Palace of Westminster became a powerful force in the centuries after the Norman Conquest.

The Abbey became the coronation site of Norman kings, but none were buried there until Henry III rebuilt it in Anglo-French Gothic style as a shrine to honour Edward the Confessor and as setting for his own tomb, under the highest Gothic nave in England. The work continued between 1245-1517 and was largely finished by the architect Henry Yevele in the reign of King Richard II. Henry VII added a Perpendicular style chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary in 1503 (known as the Henry VII Chapel). Henry VIII had assumed direct royal control in 1539 and granted the Abbey cathedral status by charter in 1540, simultaneously issuing letters patent establishing the diocese of Westminster and sparing it from dissolution. Westminster was a cathedral only until 1550. The expression "robbing Peter to pay Paul" may arise from this period when money meant for the Abbey, which was dedicated to St Peter, was diverted to the treasury of St Paul's Cathedral.

The Abbey was restored to the Benedictines under the Catholic Queen Mary, but they were again ejected under Queen Elizabeth I in 1559. In 1579, Elizabeth re-established Westminster as a "Royal Peculiar" — a church responsible directly to the sovereign, rather than to a diocesan bishop — and made it the Collegiate Church of St Peter. It suffered damage during the turbulent 1640s, when it was attacked by Puritan iconoclasts, but was again protected by its close ties to the state during the Commonwealth period.

The abbey's two western towers were built between 1722 and 1745 by Nicholas Hawksmoor, constructed from Portland stone to an early example of a Gothic Revival design. Further rebuilding and restoration occurred in the 19th century under Sir George Gilbert Scott.

Until the 19th century, Westminster was the third seat of learning in England, after Oxford and Cambridge. It was here that the first third of the King James Bible Old Testament and the last half of the New Testament were translated. The New English Bible was also put together here in the 20th century.

Since the coronations in 1066 of both King Harold and William the Conqueror, all English and British monarchs (except Lady Jane Grey, although it is highly debatable whether she was, either in theory or practice, the Queen of England; and Edward V and Edward VIII, who did not have coronations) have been crowned in the Abbey. St Edward's Chair, the throne on which British sovereigns are seated at the moment of coronation, is housed within the Abbey; from 1296 to 1996 the chair also housed the Stone of Scone upon which the kings of Scotland are crowned, but pending another coronation the Stone is now kept in Scotland. According to H.V. Morton's "In Search of London," a ghostly monk is said to appear in the Abbey on the eve of a coronation. The book states that the monk was last seen prior to the coronation of George VI in 1937. (The book was published in 1951; it is unknown if the monk was seen prior to Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953.)

Henry III rebuilt the Abbey in honour of the Royal Saint Edward the Confessor whose relics were placed in a shrine in the sanctuary. Henry III was interred nearby in a superb chest tomb with effigial monument, as were many of the Plantagenet kings of England. Subsequently, most Kings and Queens of England were buried here, although Henry VIII and Charles I, and all monarchs after George II are buried at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. In 2005 the original ancient burial tomb of Edward the Confessor was discovered, beneath the 1268 Cosmati mosaic pavement, in front of the High Altar. A series of royal tombs dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries was also discovered using ground-penetrating radar. Aristocrats were buried in side chapels and monks and people associated with the Abbey were buried in the Cloisters and other areas.

Mallard Ducklings - Orlando, FL

03/26/2011

I stopped by Lake Davis last month after visiting the eagles at the cemetery. There was a new batch of Mallard ducklings at the lake, so I stopped to take a few snaps. The light was dwindling and I didn't have my flash, so I set the ISO high and started clicking away. I went from 400mm to 100mm until finally they were so close that I couldn't focus any longer. They literally walked right up to me and weren't concerned about me whatsoever. They were so cute!

This is one of only a couple of images that came out. With the low light, I had an extremely slow shutter speed, even with the high ISO. The ducklings wouldn't cooperate by sitting still, so most of the images have too much motion blur to do anything with. It sure was a nice way to cap off the day.

Thank you all for your support and comments.

Green Man Cake with Roses
nature image
"A Green Man is [an image]. . . of a face surrounded by or made from leaves. Branches or vines may sprout from the nose, mouth, nostrils or other parts of the face and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. Commonly used as a decorative architectural ornament, Green Men are frequently found on carvings in churches and other buildings (both secular and ecclesiastical).

The Green Man motif has many variations. Found in many cultures around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative deities springing up in different cultures throughout the ages. Primarily it is interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, or 'renaissance,' representing the cycle of growth each spring. Some speculate that the mythology of the Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history." wikipedia

The Green Man cake is a key lime cake decorated with home-grown mint leaves. The recipe is slightly adapted from cooks.com:

KEY LIME CAKE
________________________________________
1/2 c. (1 stick) unsalted butter; or use salted; whatever!
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 c. all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2/3 c. heavy cream (canned milk works)
1 Key lime, with grated rind and juiced to make 1 tablespoon Key lime juice
1 (6 cup) bundt pan or 8 inch square cake pan, 2 inches deep [This was done as a layer cake with round pans used.]
mint leaves (optional)

FOR GLAZE:
1/2 c. Key lime juice
1 c. powdered sugar

Pam pan[s]. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream the butter until smooth. Gradually add the sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, and continue to beat. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together. Add the flour and the cream /milk into the egg mixture.
Mix in the Key lime rind and 1 tablespoon juice. Spoon the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 20 minutes. Cover the top loosely with a piece of the foil to prevent, burning and continue to bake for another 20 minutes.

The cake is done when a knife or cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean, and the cake starts to pull away from the side. Remove from the oven and let stand 10 minutes. Turn out onto a cake rack to cool.
Meanwhile, prepare the glaze by mixing the 1/2 cup Key lime juice and the confectioners' sugar together until smooth.
While the cake is still warm, slowly spoon the glaze over the top of the cake so that all of the liquid is absorbed. If you place a plate under the cake rack to catch the glaze that runs off, the drippings can be reapplied until all of the liquid has been absorbed. Before serving, sprinkle with additional confectioners' sugar; to be like the photo, place an image of the greenman on top and decorated in 360 degree pattern with mint leaves.

I had set up my tripod to take a few shots of our garden, when this chipmunk stuck its head up to check me out. It proceeded to pose for me for a few minutes.

I am finding that my few wildlife images often come about by pure luck. Case in point is this capture of a warbler: flic.kr/p/9C1tT1

The Wikimedia Commons website offers a multitude of historical images with no restrictions on use. This late 19th or early 20th century image, by a Keystone photographer, shows Slate pickers, Anthracite Coal Mining, Scranton, Pa. The job of a breaker boy was to remove impurities (rock, slate, sulfur, ash or "bone", clay, soil) from the coal by hand. This form of child labor began around 1866, employing boys between the ages of eight and twelve years old. They remained an important part of the coal industry, despite child labor laws, until technological advancements and child education laws eliminated their positions in 1920s.
