The Wikimedia Commons website offers a multitude of historical images with no restrictions on use. This late 19th or early 20th century image, by a Keystone photographer, shows Slate pickers, Anthracite Coal Mining, Scranton, Pa. The job of a breaker boy was to remove impurities (rock, slate, sulfur, ash or "bone", clay, soil) from the coal by hand. This form of child labor began around 1866, employing boys between the ages of eight and twelve years old. They remained an important part of the coal industry, despite child labor laws, until technological advancements and child education laws eliminated their positions in 1920s.
