The Making of Harry Potter 29-05-2012
photo gift
People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for nearly a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old - and now, for the first time, the doors are going to be opened for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Secrets will be revealed.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter films - the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. It also reveals some closely guarded secrets, including facts about the special effects and animatronics that made these films so hugely popular all over the world.

Here are just some of the things you can expect to see and do:
- Step inside and discover the actual Great Hall.
- Explore Dumbledore’s office and discover never-before-seen treasures.
- Step onto the famous cobbles of Diagon Alley, featuring the shop fronts of Ollivanders wand shop, Flourish and Blotts, the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and Eeylops Owl Emporium.
- See iconic props from the films, including Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle.
Learn how creatures were brought to life with green screen effects, animatronics and life-sized models.
- Rediscover other memorable sets from the film series, including the Gryffindor common room, the boys’ dormitory, Hagrid’s hut, Potion’s classroom and Professor Umbridge’s office at the Ministry of Magic.

Located just 20 miles from the heart of London at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the very place where it all began and where all eight of the Harry Potter films were brought to life. The Studio Tour is accessible to everyone and promises to be a truly memorable experience - whether you’re an avid Harry Potter fan, an all-round movie buff or you just want to try something that’s a little bit different.

The tour is estimated to take approximately three hours (I was in there for 5 hours!), however, as the tour is mostly self guided, you are free to explore the attraction at your own pace. During this time you will be able to see many of the best-loved sets and exhibits from the films. Unique and precious items from the films will also be on display, alongside some exciting hands-on interactive exhibits that will make you feel like you’re actually there.

The magic also continues in the Gift Shop, which is full of exciting souvenirs and official merchandise, designed to create an everlasting memory of your day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

Hogwarts Castle Model - Get a 360 degree view of the incredible, hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction that features within the Studio Tour. The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department having been built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films. The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years. The model was used for aerial photography, and was digitally scanned for CGI scenes.

The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films. To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every four minutes so you can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery. To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of the courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were shot.

So I uploaded this pic yesterday morning and head off to work thinking I would fill up the description and other info but I came home late and totally forgot...
Weeks are very pressing, everyday I leave home before 9am and come back at about 8pm, 2 days a week I come back after midnight because of my teaching + learning.

About that:
I'm on my second week of a photo reportage course, something I always sucked at doing.
I generally don't like tackling long-ish projects, I usually base my work on peaks of inspiration.
It's a very new thing to me, but I'm enjoying it and will try to make the best of it.

I think this is the last picture of my last Sunday I will be uploading, as awesome as the place is, I hate to milk the cow completely dry.
Unfortunately after an inspiration peak fades, stuff gets old, and I hate to dig up old stuff that is just part of another time.
This is the reason I always sucked at projects.

Editing:
- Camera and lens profiling in camera raw, highlight and shadow recovery.
- Time consuming dust cloning...
- A little transformation to correct perspective distortion.
- A hint of radial blurring on the sky to smoothen out some ugly clouds.
- B&W conversion using Silver Efex pro adding strucure.
- Local contrast control using curves.
- Saturation boost on greens.
- Color grading with a sand color soft light layer.

Columnar jointed sill at Calton Hill quarry, Derbyshire
upload photos
Originally uploaded for the Guesswhere UK group.

Calton Hill quarry was worked for basalt (roadstone or railway ballast, I think) but closed quite a number of years ago. The quarry exposed a complex section through a volcanic vent and associated dolerite sill. The columns in centre of the photo are part of the sill, but there are also an extensive series of basalt lavas, tuffs (volcanic ash) and vent agglomerates ( shattered and fragmented rock that has fallen back into the former volcano crater) some of which can be seen in the darker, finer grained material in the upper part of the cliff.

The quarry was partly used as a landfill site, but that is now completed, capped and grassed over. The steep grassy slope with thin terraces in the upper left is the front limit of the landfill.

Been too busy moving into the new house to process photos for months...my cards are all full so I can't even take anything new. But I had to take something for Gizmodo's Christmas Lights photo contest so I tried a quick experiment.

Unfortunately I couldn't achieve what I had imagined, a bulb filament in the foreground with blurred bulbs in the background. The 50mm Voightlander lens on my E-P1 just doesn't have a very close minimum focus. Instead this was taken with the lens unscrewed right to the end of the thread as I searched around my tree in an otherwise unlit room looking for decent shots.

"Fear mongering, simply intensifies the likelihood of violence. If people are made to feel that they are in eminent danger or threatened, there is a fight or flight response. Based on that principle you are guaranteed a percentage of the responses are going to be violent.” says Colla.

Colla wants to be clear, he does not blame Sarah Palin for the Arizona shootings- what he blames is her vitriolic rhetoric that have become her character trademark.

“Whether or not Palin influenced Jared Lee Loughner, is rather beside the point. Her actions and her language have been consistently hyperbolic, manipulative and irresponsible. Palin gives speeches and the crowd tends to react to the tough-talk and rhetoric, so that’s what she continues doing it… That behavior is typical of people who participate in pageantry, but that’s not leadership. In light of the past weeks events it might be a good opportunity to examine what is effective or appropriate rhetoric and what we as a society deem unacceptable.”

Quartiers disparus.

Comments and Faves much appreciated!!! ~ Have an awesome weekend everybody!!!

The cathedral’s name comes from the 6th-century Hagia Sophia cathedral in Constantinople (meaning Holy Wisdom, and dedicated to the Holy Wisdom rather than a specific saint named Sophia). According to a less popular theory, its model was the 13-domed oaken Saint Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod (ca. 989), which Yaroslav I the Wise determined to imitate in stone as a sign of gratitude to the citizens of Novgorod who had helped him secure the Kievan throne in 1019.
…..
After the Russian Revolution of 1917 and during the Soviet antireligious campaign of the 1920s, the government plan called for the cathedral’s destruction and transformation of the grounds into a park “Heroes of Perekop” (after a Red Army victory in the Russian Civil War in Crimea). The cathedral was saved from destruction primarily with the effort of many scientists and historians. Nevertheless, in 1934, Soviet authorities confiscated the structure from the church, including the surrounding seventeenth–eighteenth century architectural complex and designated it as an architectural and historical museum.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Sophia_Cathedral_in_Kiev

It's still an architectural and historical museum today, since three different denominations are laying claim to this property.

The Lincoln Memorial, located on the National Mall, is a United States Presidential memorial honoring the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Dedicated on May 30, 1922, the peripteral structure was designed by Henry Bacon, and houses Daniel Chester French's monumental seated statue of sculpture of Lincoln.

In 1867, Congress incorporated the Lincoln Monument Association to build the memorial. A site wasn't chosen until 1901. In 1911, Congress formally authorized the memorial and the first stone was put into place on Lincoln's birthday, Feburary 12, 1914.

Bacon's design takes the severe form of a Greek Doric temple, with 36 massive columns, each 37 feet high and representative of one the 25 U.S. states and 11 seceeded states at the time of Lincoln's death, surrounding a central cella, flanked by two other cellas, and rises above the porticos. The names of the 48 states of the Union when the memorial was completed are carved on the exterior attic walls, and a later plaque commemorates the admission of Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. The stone is Indiana limestone and Yule marble, quarried at the town of Marble, Colorado.

The focus of the memorial is French's sculpture, which depicts the President worn and pensive, gazing eastward towards the Reflecting Pool and the Washington Monument. Beneath his hands, the Roman fasces, symbols of the authority of the Republic, are sculpted in relief on the seat. The statue stands 19-feet, 9-inches tall and 19 feet wide, and was carved from 28 blocks of white Georgia marble, quarried at the town of Tate. Popular legend claims that Robert E. Lee's face is carved onto the back of the statue, looking back across the Potomoc at Arlington House, and that Lincoln is shown using sign language to represent his initials. The National Park Service denies both stories.

Insriptions of two of Lincoln's well known speeches are inscribed on the interior walls of the outer cellas below a series of murals by Jules Guerin. The south wall bears the text of the Gettysburg address below an angel, representative of truth, freeing a slave. The north wall bears the text of the second inaugural address below the depiction of unity of the American North and South. On the wall behind the statue is the dedication: "In this temple / as in the hearts of the people / for whom he saved The Union / the memory of Abraham Lincoln / is enshrined forever."

The memorial has been the site of many famous events, most famously, Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered in front of 25,000 people on August 28, 1963, during the rally at the end of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. A marked tile on the memorial's steps shows where Dr. King stood. On May 9, 1970, President Richard Nixon had a impromptu middle-of-the-night meeting with protesters preparing to march against the Vietnam War just days after the Kent State shootings.

The Lincoln Memorial is shown on the reverse of the United States one cent coin, which bears Lincoln's portrait on the front, and on the back of the U.S. five dollar bill, the front of which also bears Lincoln's portrait.

In 2007, The Lincoln Memorial was ranked #7 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

CLESS

Collage a Jigsaw

by Ana Ibarra

Why have you chosen to work with collage?

I am a graffiti artist. I have always loved Pop Art, its design, its logos, its fonts… I thing led to another and all of them had something in common, the collage. I think the collage I able to mix all forms of art and more in perfect harmony. It has an incredible graphic power.

What comes first: idea, or image?

The image without a doubt.. I can have ideas, imagine projects but it is when I look at a magazine or a newspaper that the images catch my attention and they take a place in my head, like a jigsaw, the fit in! I can see it so clearly in some occasions

Do you have an archive of cutouts?

I like to work with paper. I work with magazine and papers that I pick up from the streets or material that people gives to me.
I like to find the stuff; I like the fact that the encounters are made by chance. I collect magazine, newspapers, catalogues, pictures. Regarding the digital collage, I save the files on different folders depending on the type of image. I like to surf the web and get as many images as I can, I reckon I am obsessed with it. I love to surf and to steal images, but what I try to do is create a new image, very different of the one that I started working with, leaving it unrecognizable so it is my own creation.

Do you throw a lot away?

I reuse most of the materials, as much as I can of course. I save every piece even small ones as later on I will try to fit it on a different creation, That is something that I love to do!
I have manage to create collages using every single little piece without throwing anything away, see that everything fits it is just incredible

Unfortunately I've never seen or sat anywhere near this tree in real life.
Check out the beautiful original image in the first comment.

I set myself the challenge of using the first new three textures that caught my eye in the pool. They are: Burnt Lace by pareeerica, texture 117 by Emma Cox and texture/229 by les brumes.

1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ 2 (07)
make a picture
The original TZ, currently sometimes referenced as TZ1 to differ from later TZ2, was developed in together with Autodelta, a company led by Ex-Ferrari engineer Carlo Chiti. It featured a 1570 cc twin cam engine and other mechanical components shared with the Alfa Romeo Giulia and carried a 105 series chassis number, but was a purpose built sports racing car, with a tubular spaceframe chassis, light all-aluminium bodywork, disc brakes and independent suspension. The result was a lightweight coupé of only 650 kilograms (1,400 lb) and top speed of 134 miles per hour (216 km/h). The TZ was built both for street and racing trim, with the latest racing versions producing up to 160 brake horsepower (120 kW).

The car debuted at the 1963 FISA Monza Cup, where TZs took the first four places in the prototype category. At the beginning of 1964 the TZ was homologated (100 units were needed for homologation) to the Gran Turismo category. After homologation it started to take more class wins in Europe and North-America. Of the first TZ, 112 units were built between 1963 and 1965. Only built as limited amount these TZ models are quite collectibles nowadays, listed price around 150,000-200,000 US dollars.

In 1965 the car was updated with new fibreglass bodywork providing lower drag and reduced weight (620 kg). This new version was also made by Zagato. The new design was called the Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ2. The TZ2 was only built as racing version with Autodelta prepared twin plug, dry sump lubrication engine producing around 170 brake horsepower (130 kW). With this engine the car reached top speed of 152 miles per hour (245 km/h). The rear window was also changed, now single unit rather than three part window in TZ. Development of TZ cars was stopped in the end of 1965, to make room for new GTA racing program. Only 12 TZ2's were built

Blue Whale Sighted - Off We Go

On our way to the Isla Coronado a blue whale was sighted in the distance and our boat and some other boats sped toward it. Blue whales are shier than grey whales and go down for ten or fifteen minutes at a time. They make a loud belching sound when they rise and breath and that is how we detected them. It was an exciting experience.

1956 Ferrari 250 GT Boano (13)
make a picture
Pinin Farina introduced a 250-based prototype at the 1956 Geneva Motor Show which came to be called the 250 GT Boano. Intended as a styling exercise and inspiration to 250 GT Europa customers, demand soon called for construction of a series of the car.

Unable to meet demand, Pinin Farina asked Mario Boano, formerly of Ghia, to handle the construction. When Fiat recruited Boano, he handed production duties of the Ferrari to his son-in-law Ezio Ellena. With partner Luciano Pollo, Carrozzeria Ellena would produce the Ferrari for another few years. Ellena revised the car, raising the roof and removing the vent windows from the doors.

Carrozzeria Boano built 74 250 GTs on the long wheelbase chassis.

All but one were coupes. The single convertible, 0461 GT, was sold to New York collector, Bob Lee, off the stand at the 1956 New York Auto Show. At the direction of Enzo Ferrari, Lee bought the car for ,500, far below cost. He still owns it, making it one of the oldest Ferraris still in the hands of the original purchaser.

So far my digital images have only been published on the net, mostly on flickr. But when a friend recently asked for a picture of mine as a birthdaypresent I started thinking about photo-combinations to get printed up, nice and large of course!

I have now put together a number of 'photo combi's' and I would really appreciate your opinion about these. Which one would you like to see printed up and why? Or maybe you don't like the combinations at all, in which case, please, tell me so as well! Naturally, in order to best be able to judge, you should really view the large size...

Leave your comment here or as a comment to the group I have posted these ten combinations in!
