Best! Thank-You Gift! EVER!
photo gifts
Gave a talk to Washington Apple Pi this morning and received the greatest thank-you gift ever: a Holga 120 rollfilm camera.

It is made of plastic and has many imperfections and no technical superlatives of any kind. But it's become a cult camera because -- like so many of us -- it has a winning personality and thus people tend to reclassify its faults as mere Quirks.

Quirks of the Chinese-made Holga include: a cheap, distortive lens that vignettes the corners of the frame and a poorly-designed back that leaks light. This kit actually includes a roll of electrical tape. The instructions urge you to tape down the two AA batteries that power the flash and to strap the camera with it to tighten the back a little better.

The group presented it to me after my talk and I couldn't have been more delighted. I took a seat while the rest of the meeting continued. Thennnn...

...I noticed that film was included in the box.

I am a weak man. So yes, I unwrapped the cellophane and tried to assemble the camera and load it up as quietly as I could. There was no way I was leaving there without Holga shots of the group.

Here, let me show them to you:

Oh.

It's on film.

I have to send it out and wait for the prints to come back.

Well, we can look forward to that, then.

Apple Pi went to the top of the range and bought me the Holga 120CFN, with built-in flash AND integrated color flash filters. Twist the knob up at the top and and Red, Blue, and Yellow filters rotate into position to color the flash light.

(I have just had a discussion with the friend I'm staying with -- a scientist -- about whether this thingy is Filtering the light or Tinting it.)

(I have some really awesome friends.)

I'm going to have a lot of fun with this (for the next 12 exposures, at least). The whole point of the Holga is to return to the days of fun, snapshot photography. If there's no chance of producing a clear image free from defects, you can dispense with the Lust For Perfection and just take some damned pictures.

Check out the manual right here.

Damn, I've spent almost an hour engrossed in the Holga FAQ, and a set of instructions for how to use the Holga lens on a DSLR, and a Holga group on Flickr, and...

...Okay I'm clearly going to be up for a while. You kids go play.

Jasper with his lovely hostess : Gendered Fashion Part I
fun with photos

The beautiful High Femme on the left hosted a fantastic Hanukkah party. Her dress is amazing. The fit is great. It is classically sexy by baring arms and shoulders, rather than legs. I love her jewelery, headpiece and attitude as well.
I am very pleased with my outfit as well. The play of blues and yellows with the bare shoulder is fun. When I saw the pic I thought "wow, total eighties."
I got the earrings at Piedmont on Haight street. The owner has been making them since the eighties when she would wholesale them to large chains. She has them in all of the colors of the rainbow and more.
The tights are American Apparel (tip: get a size smaller than you think you need. AA tights always stretch.)
The bag is from five and diamond.
----------------------------
I had a great time that night. The crowd was queer, sophisticated, beautiful and trans friendly. What more could you ask? Funny thing, in my mind I was in complete girl drag. But if I look at the picture I think genderqueer, circus, or performer of some sort. This outfit leaves the gender binary behind.
I am starting to experiment with non-binary outfits again. I am femme identified and I have been focusing on femme drag for a couple of months, but I am in a space where I am reorienting my drag. In an ode to Deleuze I would say that I have been on a path of 'becoming-femme', but it has started to feel stratifying rather than liberating. I want to explore gender mutation for a while. At this juncture I will ponder some recent gendered fashion choices. I will start with color in my next post.

Thought that it was time to include a photo of us! This is the National Library of Ireland building on Kildare Street, Dublin. We first opened to the public on Friday, 29 August 1890.

The next day's Irish Times, recorded that the opening was "a very brilliant affair in every way. There was an enormous concourse of visitors, specially invited - a brilliant assemblage, in truth, of learning and beauty, and of personages of distinction in the social and official world of this country."

This picture part of the DailyShoot theme vertical lines and is one of three that I have decided to use. I always liked the idea of the lines in a forest and the patterns heading into the distance, and this is another attempt at that kind of shot. Was particularly lucky with the light, which gives the spectaular green glow to the picture. Taken in the woods around Bartestree Herefordshire UK

This last Saturday I hitched a ride with Rich to Emerald City ComiCon. I had read on his blog that he was going to be there and made a effert to seek him out. While looking around, the voice over the speaker said he was here and signing now. I left the group of friend I was with and headed over there with a good 15 people long. It did not take too long. He said he like the shirt I had on and asked where I got it from. The shirt said "Nice to meet you. Roll Initiative" from geeklable. It made my day. I picked the hard back verison of his current book, The Happiest Days of Our Lives and had it signed along with a picture from his TNG days. I had wanted to pick up some of his other books, but he did not have any there. I will have to see what he has at San Diego ComiCon. I shuck his hand (good grip) and took a picture of him (see above). Had fun, not a full day con, but found a few items I did not know I needed till I found them.

I first visited this area in 1987 at the begininng of my photo studies, at the time my then current girlfriend lived not far form here, I had myself grown up only a kilometer or two away. I recently returned having been practising my photo-skills for a few years longer to see what I might see.

Well I saw plenty, but the film is still unprocessed and I only took 3 digi-cam shots.

Fucking batteries.

Next visit, take my extra battery and who knows maybe a 747 will shoot through the frame in the background?

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.

Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

To find out what you missed at the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon please do see our HackerLeague event page and blog post announcing the winners.

Sweet, Sweet Galaxy by Pip & Pop
image gallery
Smiths Row, The Market Cross, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 1BT
Tel: +44 (0) 1284 762081

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".

The purpose here is not to duplicate the original image, from Okinawa Soba's stream, but to generate an animated gif to assist viewing. Unfortunately, animation is not automatic - to animate you must view the image at original resolution (click all sizes) or simply scroll down.

Okinawa Soba posted several CC licensed stereoimages by T. Enami documenting life in early 20th century Japan (the Meiji period). The original hand tinted image, presented for parallel viewing and showing geisha in Hikone park, is one of many remarkable stereo compositions. This animated gif version exploits motion parallax to give a stereo illusion without eyestrain, to see what the photographer envisioned.
