ap is short for Zapped Artificial Picture. The production of a Zap starts by feeding a series of queries into Google Image Search. A series consists of between 4 and 10 words. The first image generated in response to each word is considered the most important visual representation of that word, at that time, according to the current internet authority. The generated collection of images is subsequently assembled into a unique collage: a Zap. We cut, we tear and we rearrange until a new order is introduced into the chaos of word-image (dis-)association. The individual images are thus incorporated into a new context, creating a new tense state of meaning and random relations.

We have outsourced the production of Zaps to a web application designed specifically for the purpose of generating Zaps. The ZapMachine is now in charge of the autonomous production of a potentially unlimited sequence of collages based on a predetermined input. Our ZapMachine selects images from the internet and manipulates these, creating ever new Zap collages. Out of the resulting works we select the Zap with the highest quality. The query term serves as the title of the final product.

Frida Shrine - Traded

Finally getting a huge lot of pictures moved from my camera to computer. Here's a shrine I made for a trade earlier this year. The box is a wooden one from a craft store. Inside I used magazine clippings (of red coral and a Frida portrait.) The doors were decorated with a butterfly from a calendar, gold metallic doily, pieces of scrapbook paper, text from vintage medical books and more of the magazine clips. The outside door includes a bramble circle that was on a greeting card. More anatomic images, calendar & magazine clips on the outside and back. I added sequins in various shapes for a bit of bling. The box was first painted with Titan buff acrylic - a light creamy color. Then I stippled it with magenta, a deep antique gold and finally with Golden fine irridescent gold. There are also some accent stripes just inside the doorway that were painted with turquoise to match the butterfly wings. The birds on the top are German scrap that I bought at one of my favorite shops in San Jose, California - Scrapbook Island. The blue Frida letters are from a sheet of commercial press-ons.

Why have you chosen to work with collage?
I am a graffiti artist. I have always loved Pop Art, its design, its logos, its fonts… I thing led to another and all of them had something in common, the collage. I think the collage I able to mix all forms of art and more in perfect harmony. It has an incredible graphic power.
What comes first: idea, or image?
The image without a doubt.. I can have ideas, imagine projects but it is when I look at a magazine or a newspaper that the images catch my attention and they take a place in my head, like a jigsaw, the fit in! I can see it so clearly in some occasions
Do you have an archive of cutouts?
I like to work with paper. I work with magazine and papers that I pick up from the streets or material that people gives to me.
I like to find the stuff; I like the fact that the encounters are made by chance. I collect magazine, newspapers, catalogues, pictures. Regarding the digital collage, I save the files on different folders depending on the type of image. I like to surf the web and get as many images as I can, I reckon I am obsessed with it. I love to surf and to steal images, but what I try to do is create a new image, very different of the one that I started working with, leaving it unrecognizable so it is my own creation.
Do you throw a lot away?
I reuse most of the materials, as much as I can of course. I save every piece even small ones as later on I will try to fit it on a different creation, That is something that I love to do!
I have manage to create collages using every single little piece without throwing anything away, see that everything fits it is just incredible

So far my digital images have only been published on the net, mostly on flickr. But when a friend recently asked for a picture of mine as a birthdaypresent I started thinking about photo-combinations to get printed up, nice and large of course!
I have now put together a number of 'photo combi's' and I would really appreciate your opinion about these. Which one would you like to see printed up and why? Or maybe you don't like the combinations at all, in which case, please, tell me so as well! Naturally, in order to best be able to judge, you should really view the large size...

Life in the middle ages, we're usually told, was nasty, brutish, and short. Picture a medieval scene - Monty Python's knights clip-clopping by with their coconut shells, say, or the magnificently brooding cheekbones of Jonathan Rhys Meyers's Henry VIII - and a revolting peasant won't be far away, eking out a miserable existence before expiring in one of a variety of unpleasant and unhygienic ways.
But now one pharmacy chain would have us believe that there are lifestyle lessons to be learned beneath medieval England's scrofulous exterior. Our ancestors may have succumbed to pox and pestilence, but they did so, it seems, with lithe figures and unfurred arteries. Research shows the average medieval diet was a model for healthy living: low in saturated fats and transfats, high in vegetables, and topped off with a working life of invigorating outdoor exercise.
So should we all be following the Medieval Diet? Well, yes and no. We could do a lot worse than model ourselves on a prosperous medieval smallholder, eating pulses and wholegrains, home-grown fruit and veg, a little meat and fish, and no refined sugar, the whole lot washed down with weak ale (safer than drinking dirty water).
The diet of the average aristocrat, however, was more alarming. Conspicuous consumption was the order of the day: the wealthy shunned the peasant vegetables in favour of gigantic quantities of meat and fish (lots of it salted, thanks to the fact that fridges hadn't yet been invented), followed by elaborate sugary confections and creamy custards. And they cultivated a taste for expensive wines on top of their usual daily allowance of eight pints of beer.
That, of course, raises the important question of how much of world history can be explained by the ruling classes being drunk all the time. As for the medieval diet, the real lesson is of global importance: the rich have always eaten too much meat, salt and sugar, leaving the poor uncertain of being able to eat at all.
