How funny is this? Just ran across it as I was cleaning up. I had a student long ago who was first cousin to Courteney Cox, and she brought me this signed photo as part of her excuse for being absent. She missed my class because she was attending the taping of the last episode. Fair enough. How many last episodes of Friends are there?

You may have to enlarge to see how it's personalized to me. Here's my question, though:

-Is she saying best wishes to me? "Best Wishes Teaching, Luke."

-Or best wishes to whomever teaches me in the future: "Best Wishes Teaching Luke (he can be a handful)."

I won't be able to post much in the coming weeks. A new job is nearly afoot and I must prepare. You may carry on in my absence.

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".

On the weekend of November 20-21, 2010, I was invited to photograph the new Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas prior to their opening December 15, 2010 in Las Vegas NV.

This set of images represents my efforts that weekend to showcase this newest resort property opening up on the Las Vegas Strip. Thanks to David Scherer from The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas for showing me around, to Miiko Mentz at Katalyst Films for helping to arrange the shoot, and to my wife for modeling for me.

For this picture I wanted to create the illusion of a candle burning extra bright. My first thought was to add some extra wicks into a normal candle and maybe a bit of lamp oil or paraffin. After a couple of tests I decided that was not going to give me the effect I was after, all it did was make a bigger flame and an even bigger mess. I then thought about using a blow torch but this would involve buying some huge candles to make the trick work. The answer lay in a small butane gas soldering iron from Tandy’s. This was about the size of a pencil with a long tip and an adjustable flame. Best of all it was only .

So to put this picture together, I placed three regular candles on top of a black sheet of paper which in turn was on top of a cardboard box. I drilled the centre out of a forth candle and made a hole in the box where the candle would sit. I then pushed the butane torch through the hole into the hollowed out candle. I used a couple of cans to hold the torch high enough and made the final height adjustment with bluetac.

For the lights, I had one SB-28 fired through a translucent umbrella by a PW to the left of the camera. It was set on 1/8th power and 24mm zoom. I placed a second snooted SB-28 with a blue filter over the hollowed out candle. It was set to 1/64th power and 85mm zoom.

For the flames to show up as brightly as possible, I set the shutter speed to 1/8 of a second and had the camera on a tripod fired by a remote shutter release.

I had to take the shot reasonably quickly as the soldering iron produces a temperature of 1300 degrees at the tip of the blue flame and I had a home make cardboard snoot sitting directly above it. Even after a few seconds it was hot to the touch. I had a wet tea towel on standby just in case! :)

"Tantric Shiva Lingams"

This is the last of 9 images (and my favorite one) of a wonderful stone from India that I first saw a few years ago and had not purchased any until this year. Seen at the Tucson Rock and Gem Show, venue at the Ramada Ltd.

Some of these images are quite beautiful to me and faithfully capture how I saw them displayed this year. Each photo has another link and detail added to the description. All are part of the set I have started for this year's show.

"Tantric Shiva Lingams", scared to the Hindu tradition, are ceremoniously gathered once a year from the muddy banks of the Narmada River, one of the 7 sacred places of pilgrimage in India. Of those found, very few have the characteristics patterning that make the Tantric Lingam so unique. They are naturally formed of a mineral called cryptocrystalline quartz, with iron oxide deposits said to have been implanted in the riverbed by a meteorite millions of years ago. my "show"

My first ever show: a bunch of my pictures hanging at the local bagel shop. Here are the photos before I packed them up and brought them down to Bagel Works.

Preparation has consumed most of the past month.

It took a while to go through all of my images, select a bunch, get them printed (I had them printed through Aperture's built-in print ordering and Adorama. The winner: Adorama), then select the best of the prints - it's amazing how some pictures look great at 11x14 inches, but not so great at 5x7.

I then cut mats for all of them - as most are "non-standard" crops - and framed them. I think it's something like 27 prints; 8 16x20 frames, 16 11x14 frames and 3 8x10 frames. I should probably go down and count them.
