Newberry National Volcanic Monument was designated on November 5, 1990 to protect the area around the Newberry Volcano in the United States. It was created within the boundaries of the Deschutes National Forest and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. It includes 50,000 acres (20,000 ha) of lakes, lava flows, and spectacular geologic features in central Oregon. These photos are taken from the summit Paulina Peak 7,985 ft, (2,434 m). Just below us are East Lake and Paulina Lake and The Big Obsidian Flow, created 1,300 years ago, covers 700 acres.

This is one of those lucky shots where I just happened to be composing a sunset castle shot when the fireworks for the castle stage show - Dream Along With Mickey shot off. Did some creative dodging and burning in the edit, which accounts for the deep rich colors on the left and bright highlights on the right...

This day in Disney history:
(1971) One of Walt Disney World's most popular attractions, the Electrical Water Pageant, debuted on the Seven Seas Lagoon. Originally known as the Electrical Pageant, it is a thousand-foot-long floating parade, two “trains” of seven barges each bearing 25-foot-tall screens covered in blinking lights. To the sounds of Disney movie music and classical themes, these silhouettes of sea creatures circle the water every night between 9 and 10. The parade is visible from the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge, Fort Wilderness, and Contemporary hotels; guests often time their dinner reservations to coincide with the free show. The dry-land Main Street Electrical Parade debuted at Disneyland in 1972.

This day in Disney history:
(2003) Walt Disney World hosted a railway celebration in honor of Walt Disney's fascination with trains. The event also served as a reminder that the original Disneyland park was partly inspired by Walt's hobby. It was not simply that Walt was a train buff; trains became a major element in his conception of an amusement park. As early as 1948, he wrote a memo describing his idea for a park that featured a railroad station and was circumnavigated by the tracks. A railway is also a major feature of Disney World's Magic Kingdom, and miniature trains run through the Epcot World Showcase pavilion, Germany.

Daily Disney - Future World Monorail
It's hard to get excited about posting a Disney picture in the wake of what happened early yesterday morning. My heart and thoughts go out to the 21 year old boy and his family. The monorail still is and always will be a beautiful thing to me - it's unfortunate when fantasy clashes with reality, especially when reality is ugly. Darn it, people aren't supposed to die at Disney. Hopefully they can understand by way of investigation exactly what happened so something like this will never happen again.

Daily Disney - Lookin' For A Laughing Place

I don't really have much to say about this photo - except that I'm really getting to the bottom of the barrel. Fortunately for my picture editing / posting addiction, I'm headed back to the World on Saturday. As a side note – I've edited this picture before only to delete it because I just wasn't happy with it at the time, which is something I do way more than is probably normal. Does anyone else have this problem? I don't know – this time it just looks better for some reason. For me – proof that an edit can really make or break a picture...

Quick Fact:
The soundtracks for all three Splash Mountains (Disneyland, Walt Disney World & Tokyo Disneyland) are unique. In Disneyland, the score uses an orchestra, playing whimsical arrangements similar to those found in cartoons and retaining many elements of their original Song of the South arrangements.
The mountains in Florida and Japan share an identical underscore. It is in a setting-appropriate country-western style, featuring instruments like banjos, fiddles and harmonicas. The vocals, however, are completely different between the two parks.

Although I much prefer the overall look and feel of the "Peter Pan's Flight" exterior of Disneyland (if you haven't seen it search for pictures, it's pretty cool), I really like this detail and the rest of the Peter Pan characters they've put up on the building at the Magic Kingdom.

Fun with a fisheye lens
Image by gwilmore (I HATE THE NEW LAYOUT!)
My friend John Power isn't a member of Flickr, but he should be. Until today, he was the High Priests group leader in our LDS ward. However, he has been released, and Yours Truly was called to be one of the two assistants to the new group leader, but that's another story for another day. John works on the side as a photographer, mostly of weddings and the like, and does quite well with it. He recently purchased a Nikon D200, along with some lenses and other accessories; and after church today, he invited me over to examine his new toy and play around with it a little bit myself.
For this picture, I used my own Nikon D50, to which I attached John's 10.5mm f/2.8 fisheye lens. I had never used a fisheye lens before, but was amazed how much fun I had with his. This picture is one of three that I took with it, and I chose to post the photo because it is the only one of the three in which I appear. (Or part of me, at least. I don't like to do self-portraits, but in this case I felt my presence would add something to the photo.) The appearance of my foot in this image was intentional, and the setting, of course, is the den at John's house.
My EXIF data will probably show that this image went through Photoshop Elements, but all I did there was look at it. This photo was not edited or retouched in any way before I posted it. No flash was used, either; with a 2.8 lens, I was able to capture this image using nothing but ambient lighting.
For sheer fun, this one has to be included among my own favorite pictures, although I don't imagine it will be noticed all that much on Flickr. But I'm posting it anyway, in the hope that whoever does see it enjoys it.
