After Baby Belly
baby picture
3 pregnancies/cesareans with their respective stretch marks, gallbladder surgery during the second pregnancy (4 small incisions scattered about -- including where my naval piercing was), and of course an old piercing where the monstrous looking double "belly button" resides. Have some work to do, of course! But this will have to do for now -- osteoarthritis kicks my arse on a daily basis.

Ha, and the little heathens that spawned from within are pictured below: Ryan Alexander (5 tomorrow!), Cody Allen (2.5) and Liam Alistair (8 months) ♥ ♥ ♥

It's important to feel comfortable in your own skin, and this is one step to take in feeling this. It's not perfect, but it was the safe haven for my three beautiful boys, and I have accepted that.

My write up on photographing the new Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas here

On the weekend of November 20-21, 2010, I was invited to photograph the new Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas prior to their opening December 15, 2010 in Las Vegas NV.

This set of images represents my efforts that weekend to showcase this newest resort property opening up on the Las Vegas Strip. Thanks to David Scherer from The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas for showing me around, to Miiko Mentz at Katalyst Films for helping to arrange the shoot, and to my wife for modeling for me.

1964 Volkswagen T1 Samba-Bus (05)

The first generation of the VW Type 2 with the split windshield, called the Microbus or Splittie among modern fans, was produced from March 8, 1950 through the end of the 1967 model year. From 1950 to 1956, the T1 was built in Wolfsburg; from 1956 it was built at the completely new Transporter factory in Hanover. Like the Beetle, the first Transporters used the Volkswagen air cooled engine, an 1131 cc, 25 bhp (19 kW), air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine mounted in the rear.

Among American enthusiasts, it is common to refer to the different models by the number of their windows. The basic Kombi or Bus is the 11-window (a.k.a. 3-window bus because of three side windows) with a split windshield, two front cabin door windows, six rear side windows, and one rear window. The deluxe model featured eight rear side windows and two rear corner windows, making it the 15-window (not available in Europe). Meanwhile, the sunroof deluxe with its additional eight small skylight windows is, accordingly, the 23-window. From the 1963 model year, with its wider rear door, the rear corner windows were discontinued, making the latter two the 13-window and 21-window respectively. The 23 and later 21 window variants are usually described as Sambas.

Light Test
upload image
Every time I come back from a studio shoot with models, I upload images into Lightroom, and then go through and rate them (stars).

I can then go through and sort by rating and pick which ones to adjust further, and then export and process in Photoshop - that's the workflow.

As I run across amusing (to me) light tests, prior to any adjustments, I upload them here.

Here's the first light test from my new D700.

I'm not entirely sure the model's name - this is straight off the card, with whatever Lightroom defaults to.

**Edit**
Model's name is Katy.

Death Leap From Blazing Hotel
photo galleries
1947 Pulitzer Prize, Photography, Arnold Hardy, Associated Press

With only five flashbulbs, 26 year old Georgia Tech student Arnold Hardy used his last one to capture this photo of a woman leaping from the Winecoff Hotel fire. Hardy was the first amateur to win a Pulitzer prize.

Its Friday night. Arnold Hardy, like most of his fellow college students, is out having a good time. He arrives home in the early hours of the morning to hear fire trucks racing through the streets. An amateur photographer. Hardy grabs his camera, jumps into a taxi and hurries to the blaze. "I came upon it all at once. Fire was raging from the upper floors. From almost every window, men. women and children screamed tor help."

The Winecoff Hotel has no fire escapes, no fire doors, no fire stairs. The hotel is 15 stories high; the ladders ot the Atlanta Fire Department do not reach above the ninth floor. The blaze spreads rapidly. Guests on the upper floors have no way out. "The trapped victims," remembers Hardy, "were descending ropes of blankets and bed sheets in desperate attempts to reach the fully extended ladders." The sheets tear; people plunge to the pavement. Other guests try jumping
to the building next door; most fall to the street below.

As Hardy watches, he hears a woman shriek. "I looked up, raising my camera. A woman was plummeting downward. As she passed the third floor, I fired, using my last flashbulb."

The woman is lucky: Her fall is broken by a pipe and a railing. She lives.

In all, 119 people lose their lives in the December 7 Winecoff fire — including owner W. F. Winecoff, found dead, along with his wife, in his luxury suite on the 14th floor.

.. I thought Finger Photography was going to be easy but it definitely isn't.... I am up for the challenge though (small & silly as it may be) .. I'm learning too.. if you want an easy hat like above, it's a pipe cleaner that I wrapped around a marker then tied it together in the back... the ink was another problem, nothing wanted to work at first.. I used an ordinary ink pen.. doesn't look so good but oh well, I'm adding this one only to show you I am willing to show my mistakes and in hopes I may get others to join me in some finger fun.. I'm entering this photo in one of the Contests I'm running in my Flickr group Learn & Have Fun Contests, please feel free to join me if you own a Point & Shoot or Bridge Camera, I would love to see you there!

Chinese New Year Celebration

It is Chinese New Year week. In Yokohama there is one of the largest China Town in Asia and they celebrate this time. I'll upload more photos of the celebration later(^_^;).

A lion coming in a restaurant and looking for a new year gift for him(her?).
Many of the shops & restaurants in China town prepare these gifts for lion(s) because the lions are a symbol of prosperity & strength. If they accept gifts, it'll give the shop/restaurant a good fortune of the year.

A lion has found a gift and is trying to eat it.
Usually this type of lion dance is performed with 2 people. In this picture the person doing the fore legs(^_^;) got up on the shoulder of the person doing the back and stood up. This requires a kind of gymnastics skill.

Market Place, Swan Street, Warwick

Just past the Warwickshire Museum. Still in Market Place. Swan Street up ahead.

Caffe Nero at the end of the square.

On the left is Piccadilly Cards & Gifts at 23 and 25 Market Place. Which is Grade II* listed.

In 1781 in might have been part of the Market Place (the actual Market Hall is nearby in Market Place).

Circa 1634, 3 storeys, altered and restored at various times. Timber framing is exposed on two upper floors and although considerable replacements have been made much of the original work remains particularly to west elevation facing New Street. Second storey is jettied and projecting joists have moulded ends. Four alternating large and small gable heads with chevron and geometrical framing. First storey has alternating bays of chevron and close square framing. First floor is jettied as second floor. Fairly satisfactory plate glass shopfronts and one C19 pair of Gothic windows and door. Remainder of ground floor is stucco. West elevation (to New Street) is similar, but with one large and two small gable heads; a greater proportion of this timber framing is original. On corner of New Street are three crude carved heads of considerable interest. C18 sashes in cased frames throughout on upper floors. Restored roof of old tiles and machine tiles. Interior: plaster overmantel with royal arms of Charles I and date ? 1634.

23 and 25 Market Place, Warwick -British Listed Buildings

To the left of the above is The Tuckery and Fenetres Etcetera.

On Swan Street is a Greggs.

On the right is the Period House Shop.

3-color palette experiment
print photo

When my grandfather died, I inherited two Japanese prints he owned that were among his papers. They aren't very valuable, but they have sentimental significance for me. One of my contacts has been duplicating the 24 views of Mt. Fuji by Hokusai. Today after seeing these other Flickr images, I realized I could do the same with these two Japanese prints. I didn't have the prints with me, but I did experiment with the palette here, and with the composition. Stay tuned for further efforts in this series.

i was recently lucky enough to attend the opening of a superb exhibition of photography entitled 'over the hill'.

the exhibition constitutes a visual and conceptual photographic 'journey' featuring tim andrews.

tim was a practising lawyer when diagnosed with parkinsons disease in 2005.

less than a year passed before tim could no longer practice law due to his ongoing illness.

the photographic journey began after tim answered an ad calling for subjects willing to pose nude for a series of work involving 'real' people and not models.

subsequent to that shoot, various photographers, from professional to amateur, have made work featuring tim.

the 55 photographs that make up the exhibition are as varied and eclectic as the photographers themselves.

the work that i am posting here is not necessarily meant to be a visual representation of the exhibition itself, rather, it constitutes incidental and accidental images that reflect my experience of the exhibition opening.

i am personally familiar with julian holtom and solarixx [see links below], two exceptionally gifted photographers whose work is included in the exhibition, and i had the distinct pleasure of attending the opening with jules [my thanks to you sir].

the exhibition is taking place in the wayfarers arcade [southport - north west england].

go if you can, the work is exceptional and the cause is extremely worthy.
