My colleague Reenie is a talented artist and miniature hobbyist. She made these amazing mini magazine bundles and mini “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” books. I’ve placed a penny in the photo so you can see the small scale of the work.

She taught our Library Fun Club how to make books like these, and the kids had so much fun. I’m hoping she’ll display them in the library real soon to show the rest of the school these cute new library collection additions.

Bug Out Bag
photo equipment
It's been a good time to review earthquake equipment and preparation. This is what I carry in my car. Doesn't include the tools I carry for client work. Also snacks and extra water. (I kept drinking and eating those.) This reminds me to replenish.

I decided today to throw in my sleeping bag and foam pad instead of keeping them in my backyard kit. I already had the red pillow for sleeping in car, but it is possible, with all the crossing of bridges that I do, that I could spend the night at a friend or client's house on other side of bay. Even camp out if I had to since ground cloth is a bivy bag too.

I'm not completely satisfied with this kit, but it's what I got so far with what I had on hand and buying a first aid kit and small roll duct tape and matches. It's good enough for going to a shelter or staying at someones house. I put together a similar bag for my partner. I didn't lay it all out nice and neat because being perfect is not the point. Just throw some stuff together; it's better than nothing. Here's the list.

Extra set of clothing, sox, undies plus fleece hoodie
Personal sundries, old pair of glasses, fresh contacts
small towel
poncho
nylon cord
foil blanket
lighting sticks
pack tissues
Tyvek coveralls
first aid kit
weather radio
waterproof matches (container not seen)
extra water bottle
can opener
bottle opener
knife
swiss army knife
gloves
pad/pencil (pens dry out)
duct tape
large plastic bag
inverter to run laptop though now I have a car charger
12 volt lamp plus flashlight in work toolkit
ground cloth
2 t-shirts useful for bandages, splints, arm slings, mask (scissors in workbag)
tyvek windbreaker
cash in small bills
also coins kept in change bin of car for pay phones (the few that there are; make a note of locations)

I also carry a dust mask in my workbag and all kinds of gloves for work. Also carry a full set of maps (rare these days). And jumper cables. And car charger for my phone. I recommend having car chargers for all gadgets you count on since the car has power that's good enough to keep phones, and iPods running. It's worth the trouble of ordering one.

For in the house gadgets and internet access I have this set-up.

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

DC: Eisenhower Executive Office Building
photo sites
The Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB), formally known as the Old Executive Office Building (OEOB), was built from 1871 and 1888 to house the growing staffs of the State, War, and Navy Departments. Located on 17th Street, N.W., between Pennsylvania Avenue and New York Avenue, and West Executive Drive, it is owned by General Services Administration and currently occupied by the agencies of the Executive Office of the President, such as the White House Office, the Office of the Vice President, the Office of Management and Budget and the National Security Council. Supervising Architect Alfred B. Mullett's design is considered one of the best examples of French Second Empire architecture in the country. Much of the interior was designed by Richard von Ezdorf using fireproof cast-iron structural and decorative elements.

The first executive offices were constructed on sites flanking the White House between 1799 and 1820. A series of fires and overcrowding conditions led to the construction of the Treasury Building, whose North Wing necessitated the demolition of the State Department Building in 1866. Congress appointed a commission to find a replacement in 1869, and by the time construction began in 1871, it was set to incorporate the War and Navy Departments. Gradually, the original tenants outgrew and vacated the building--the Navy Department in 1918, followed by the War Department in 1938, and finally by the State Department in 1947. The White House began to move some of its offices across West Executive Avenue in 1939, and in 1949 the building was turned over to the Executive Office of the President and renamed the Executive Office Building. In 1957, President Eisenhower's Advisory Committee on Presidential Office Space recommended demolition but public outcry and associated cost saved the building.

Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, Gerald Ford, and George H. W. Bush all had offices in this building before becoming President. It has housed 16 Secretaries of the Navy, 21 Secretaries of War, and 24 Secretaries of State. Winston Churchill once walked its corridors and Japanese emissaries met here with Secretary of State Cordell Hull after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. President Herbert Hoover occupied the Secretary of Navy's office for a few months following a fire in the Oval Office on Christmas Eve 1929. In recent history, President Richard Nixon had a private office here. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was the first in a succession of Vice Presidents to the present day that have had offices in the building.

Lafayette Square Historic District, roughly bordered by 15th and 17th Sts. and H St. and State and Treasury Places, exclusive of the White House and its grounds, covers the seven-acre public park, Lafayette Square, and its surrounding structures including the Executive Office Building, Blair House, the Treasury Building, the Decatur House, and St. John's Episcopal Church.

Daily Photo - Under the Docks in California
Some of you remember the great photowalk we had down in San Clemente. I really had a good time there. On my photowalks, typically I stop from time to time and tell the assembled crowd what I am doing. Well, I finally got a chance to process this quintet!

I felt fortunate to have a good friend that had an amazing condo that overlooked this same beach. Frankly, after a long day and night of shooting, I felt spoiled and happy just taking a few more steps to my pad... grabbing some cool drinks... opening the patio doors to listen to the surf... good times!

Matt is a really nice guy, and I enjoyed our time together for the interview. He runs a website called The Digital Trekker, and he has just recently posted the interview at that link. His podcast is called "Depth of Field", so be sure to check it out!

Want to know something really strange? We were on the same flight from Tokyo to San Francisco a few weeks ago, and I didn't even know it! :) I found out about this later via Twitter -- he walked by me, and I was deeply engrossed in something on my laptop!

R.A.F. planes being loaded with munitions, France, during World War I. The people involved in this scene are all engrossed in their activities and as a result unaware of the camera. The size and power of these early aircraft is conveyed quite clearly by this image.

Two types of bombs in the main were dropped from planes. Finned mortar bombs, called 'aerial torpedoes', were used for destroying targets and 'flechettes', anti-personnel darts, were used for more specific damage.

Under the Banner of King Death
upload photos
It's a creepy old set of uploads tonight, again all from our weekend in London a few weeks back, and all from the Sunday when were shown around town by the best guide in the world to London's out of the way and most interesting places. Boris Johnson, you owe this man some sort of commission, stat!

Our first stop on the morning was a brief visit to St Olave's Church in Seething Lane (or rather a visit to the entrance to it's churchyard), to check out the incredible and decidely macabre archway over the gate (which due to it's ghoulish appearance ended up being the model for "The Church of St. Ghastly Grim" in Charles Dicken's "The Uncommercial Traveller").

Erected in 1658, the decoration turned out to be a timely edition in light of the horror that unfolded seven years later as the Great Plague of London swept through the city. Killing an estimated 20% of it's population (around 100,000 people back then), this, plus the Great Fire the following year, were PR issues the recently restored Charles II could have really done without (>_<)

Interestingly, Mary Ramsey, the woman who is widely believed to be 1665's "Patient Zero", who was the first recorded death from it (and therefore possibly brought the disease to London), is thought to be buried here. Other famous "residents" include Samuel Peyps, and, bizzarely, Mother Goose.

I kid you not :)

Sean and Cheryl: Drama on the dance floor
upload photos
Image by gwilmore (I HATE THE NEW LAYOUT!)
I took this picture nearly three weeks before uploading it, and have sort of been agonizing over it the entire time. On the one hand, I definitely succeeded in capturing the moment here, and their pose was almost perfect; but on the other hand, there were some significant distractions all around them, including the other couples on the floor at the same time and the barrier that was used to divide the ballroom into two sections for the competition. (One of the posts for the barrier was just below Cheryl's right foot, which, along with the fact that I had to rotate the image about 5 degrees to the left, explains why this image is cropped so tightly; I tried cloning out the barrier, but that altered the floor pattern just enough to make it noticeable.) But in the end, I decided I simply had to use this picture, one way or another, so I used the Lasso tool to draw a rough outline around the couple, added a 20% Gaussian blur to the background, and feathered the selection by about 25 pixels.

All told, I spent close to an hour fiddling with this one, and if anyone has any suggestions about how I might improve it, please feel free to speak up. I might replace this at some point, although what I have here now is pretty close to what I believed I could reasonably accomplish, given the circumstances and the material I had. But working on this image did enable me to get in touch with my inner artist, and in postprocessing it, I used an approach similar to what I did with this, one of my more popular shots of Miss Gergana.

Auroras light up the Antarctic night
earth image
Image by NASA Goddard Photo and Video
NASA acquired July 15, 2012

On July 15, 2012, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite captured this nighttime view of the aurora australis, or “southern lights,” over Antartica’s Queen Maud Land and the Princess Ragnhild Coast.

The image was captured by the VIIRS “day-night band,” which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as city lights, auroras, wildfires, and reflected moonlight. In the case of the image above, the sensor detected the visible auroral light emissions as energetic particles rained down from Earth’s magnetosphere and into the gases of the upper atmosphere. The slightly jagged appearance of the auroral lines is a function of the rapid dance of the energetic particles at the same time that the satellite is moving and the VIIRS sensor is scanning.

The yellow box in the top image depicts the area shown in the lower close-up image. Light from the aurora was bright enough to illuminate the ice edge between the ice shelf and the Southern Ocean. At the time, Antarctica was locked in midwinter darkness and the Moon was a waning crescent that provided little light.

Puyehue-Cordón Caulle [high res]
earth image
Image by NASA Goddard Photo and Video
NASA image acquired December 23, 2011

In early June 2011, Chile’s Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcano erupted explosively, sending volcanic ash around the Southern Hemisphere. In late December 2011, activity at the volcano had calmed, but volcanic ash and steam continued to pour through the fissure that opened several months earlier.

The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this natural-color image on December 23, 2011. The active fissure lies northwest of the Puyehue caldera, and a plume blows from the fissure toward the west and north. This image shows not just ash but also snow on the volcano surface, including the caldera. Because volcanic ash regularly coats the land surface, the pristine snow probably fell recently.

In a bulletin issued December 26, 2011, Chile’s Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería (SERNAGEOMIN) characterized the activity over the previous 24 hours as a minor eruption of low intensity.

Reaching an altitude of 2,236 meters (7,336 feet), Puyehue-Cordón Caulle is a stratovolcano, a steep-sloped, conical volcano composed of layers of ash, lava, and rocks released by previous eruptions. This volcano comprises part of the largest active geothermal area in the southern Andes.

Flash AS3 Organization of Documents
flash photo
Please see full size. A diagram of Adobe Flash document organization where C stands for class and F stands for file. The "classes" package at the top right represent custom classes that you might have. This shows how files are connected in ActionScript 3 although it was mostly like this in ActionScript 2 as well if you wanted it - but now it almost has to be like this. Hopefully this will help designers who are trying to get a handle on how to do things. We teach this and more at the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia program in Oakville imm.sheridanc.on.ca

Rue Dorchester, aujourd'hui boul.
