Teasel Glow - Sharp light in the early morning, teasel in very close-up view. Longmont, Colorado near Boulder. When I lost my beloved iMac in December, I also lost Lightroom 3, which I'd come to depend on especially when working with JPG images. Taken with a Canon G10, this weed pod took on a special glow in the early morning light of September. Now that Lightroom 5 is out in beta and available for free until June, I am going for it with photos I knew needed extra processing. I am already sure that I will purchase this newest Lightroom. It is very easy to use and has great new features over the Lightroom 3 I had been using.

In this image, the heroic hummer has drive off the bird that had been in front of it at my sister's feeder. Of course, during the period that he was putting the other bird to flight, thirteen other birds took his place at the feeder. If only they could all get along. But, that's not the hummingbird way.
Strobist Info: The feeder was in shadow while the trees in the background were in full sunlight, so I put bare strobes on light stands on either side of the feeder in order to balance the light on the hummingbirds with the light on the trees. Without the flash, the birds were in shadow. The YN560-II and YN560 were in manual mode and were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. These birds move around so fast that focus is extremely difficult. What I ended up doing was to put the camera on a tripod, manually focus on an area and then use a remote trigger when a bird flew into the area. About 1/3 of my images turned out acceptably sharp. This one was borderline, but I liked having the fleeing bird in the picture. Below in the 1st comment you can see an exposure without the strobes.

This was taken at Festival Park on Roanoke Island in North Carolina. It's a tone mapped version coming from five bracketed shots. I'm not a big fan of over done HDR images, and I think that this looks like what I saw.

Green Cay Wetlands Sunset 02

The second HDR wetlands image processed from that wonderful day at Green Cay. If you look close enough you'll see a bird sitting on one of the branches of the tree. About the only wildlife I manage to shoot that day. Even though I went there to shoot wildlife I ended up shooting all landscape photos. I did however manage to get some alligator shots later that evening. Actually I had the opportunity to shoot and amazing gator shot but I messed it up because my telephoto was to slow :(

The many hues of Saturn's atmosphere are evident in this RGB color combination from Cassini, using raw data acquired on July 9, 2010. Also visible are one of Saturn's many moons above the rings, and a shadow from another moon below the ring shadows along the left limb.

The water drops on these dandelion seeds are refracting the image of the healthy dandelion behind it. But I doubt my neighbors think that these things are quite as pretty as I do. So here is one more shot before I mow 'em all down!

San Rafael Valley, Arizona: 1-27-06

The most delightful of valley views out this way. So far south in Arizona it is not far at all from the border with Mexico. Definitely I think of this as God's Country, when I'm not calling it "my" valley. This is the valley where the horse photos are (on my stream at the end of December). It was just as thrilling to climb up and around the winding primitive road this time and top out on this valley view. If you go about 1/8 mile behind my viewpoint here, you see the other landscape with mountains pictured in the previous image.

Mallard Ducklings - Orlando, FL

I stopped by Lake Davis last month after visiting the eagles at the cemetery. There was a new batch of Mallard ducklings at the lake, so I stopped to take a few snaps. The light was dwindling and I didn't have my flash, so I set the ISO high and started clicking away. I went from 400mm to 100mm until finally they were so close that I couldn't focus any longer. They literally walked right up to me and weren't concerned about me whatsoever. They were so cute!
This is one of only a couple of images that came out. With the low light, I had an extremely slow shutter speed, even with the high ISO. The ducklings wouldn't cooperate by sitting still, so most of the images have too much motion blur to do anything with. It sure was a nice way to cap off the day.

Green Man Cake with Roses

"A Green Man is [an image]. . . of a face surrounded by or made from leaves. Branches or vines may sprout from the nose, mouth, nostrils or other parts of the face and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. Commonly used as a decorative architectural ornament, Green Men are frequently found on carvings in churches and other buildings (both secular and ecclesiastical).
The Green Man motif has many variations. Found in many cultures around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative deities springing up in different cultures throughout the ages. Primarily it is interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, or 'renaissance,' representing the cycle of growth each spring. Some speculate that the mythology of the Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history." wikipedia
The Green Man cake is a key lime cake decorated with home-grown mint leaves. The recipe is slightly adapted from cooks.com:
KEY LIME CAKE
________________________________________
1/2 c. (1 stick) unsalted butter; or use salted; whatever!
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 c. all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2/3 c. heavy cream (canned milk works)
1 Key lime, with grated rind and juiced to make 1 tablespoon Key lime juice
1 (6 cup) bundt pan or 8 inch square cake pan, 2 inches deep [This was done as a layer cake with round pans used.]

FOR GLAZE:
1/2 c. Key lime juice
1 c. powdered sugar
Pam pan[s]. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream the butter until smooth. Gradually add the sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, and continue to beat. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together. Add the flour and the cream /milk into the egg mixture.
Mix in the Key lime rind and 1 tablespoon juice. Spoon the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 20 minutes. Cover the top loosely with a piece of the foil to prevent, burning and continue to bake for another 20 minutes.
The cake is done when a knife or cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean, and the cake starts to pull away from the side. Remove from the oven and let stand 10 minutes. Turn out onto a cake rack to cool.
Meanwhile, prepare the glaze by mixing the 1/2 cup Key lime juice and the confectioners' sugar together until smooth.
While the cake is still warm, slowly spoon the glaze over the top of the cake so that all of the liquid is absorbed. If you place a plate under the cake rack to catch the glaze that runs off, the drippings can be reapplied until all of the liquid has been absorbed. Before serving, sprinkle with additional confectioners' sugar; to be like the photo, place an image of the greenman on top and decorated in 360 degree pattern with mint leaves.
