I spotted Yolanda at the Coronado Public Library on July 17, 2009. It was my first sighting of a HP Vivienne Tam netbook in the wild. Turns out the netbook belonged to Yolanda's 14 year-old daughter, who was playing tennis.
I snapped the photo using the Nokia N97 smartphone--and too quickly. Yolanda is not properly focused in the depth of field.

This photo is directly from the cam. It hasn't been edited in any way. It's also the best shot I've taken with the basic HP PhotoSmart C935. I'm pretty surprised it was able to take such sharp photos.

Large format week continues!
I think I really can't complain about this one. I was watching the cars to make sure I got complete trails from the headlights and taillights. I seem to recall I was hoping for a Max train as well...
As with all of these this is scanned using my incredibly crummy HP Scanjet 4010. This scanner only has a thin strip in the middle for 35mm. I made a moveable mask with a clear holder in it that lets me slide the 4x5 film past the narrow opening in steps. Four scans give me four overlapping strips which I combine with an ancient copy of Photoshop CS (the original CS) using the "Photomerge" feature. If you look too closely you can see a few artifacts. Given the ghetto equipment and techniques used I think it is a reasonable result. I'd love to see an actual good scan of this!

My Macintosh Set-up

Here is a photo of my desk showing my Macintosh set-up.
My main system is an Intel Core Duo MacMini. The 12" powerbook on my desk normally sits on the Griffin iCurve stand above my MacMini. (I put it on my desk so you could see the Mini.)
The Mini is sitting on top of a LaCie Mini hard drive / firewire & usb hub.

1/2 Scale Version of the 65 HP Case Steam Traction Engine (at the Buckley Old Engine Show) [BOES 4/9]

Isn’t it cute...?! But it's still quite powerful. (Perhaps 16 HP "on the belt" and 5 HP pulling power...???) This is a fully-working 1/2 scale version of the 65 HP Case steam traction engine as seen in the last photo. Some of these scale "model" versions have been recently-built by individual steam engine enthusiasts. Even on this one I see a mixture of original and modern parts (and some welding on the firebox).
Have you noticed -- men will work very hard at creating and maintaining machines that will do work for them. (It’s part of our “charm.”) Watch out when men create a machine that will itself create machines, however! (Reference: Cylons)
Taken at the annual Buckley Old Engine Show in Buckley, Michigan (on M-37 south of Traverse City). By the way, this is one of the best run outdoor events I’ve ever attended! And it's fun for the whole family. When was the last time you rode a train pulled by a real steam locomotive...?! And here's The Buckley Old Engine Show song written by Kim Carson-Colley! The video gives you a taste of a bit of what's there.

Looking at the innards of the Hewlett-Packard N36L once you open the door. HP gets a gold star for spartan yet fully-functional design.
Torx screws for disks are screwed into the door (along the bottom edge). The door also conveniently stores a Torx screwdriver, which is the only tool you'll need to work with this chassis.
Easily accessible (see the photo of the mainboard) are an internal USB 2.0 port and the chassis' four SATA disk bays. Each disk is held in a disk caddy which locks in-place with a plastic lever.

Now I know, so If you happen to have a spare HP 5083-0722 CRT tube on hand, please give me a shout.
