San Francisco - Retail District: Xanadu Gallery
photo gallery
Xanadu Gallery, at 140 Maiden Lane, was designed in 1948 by Frank Lloyd Wright as the V.C. Morris Gift Shop. The store served as a physical prototype, or proof of concept, for the circular ramp Wright had already designed for Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, though that project wasn't finished until 1959 shortly after his death.

The street entrance is unassuming--a windowless façade of fine brickwork, broken only by an updated Romanesque arch and a vertical grille on the left, created by removing every other brick and backed by recessed lights. The arch gives way to a glass tunnel atriumthen onto the interior, with a circular mezzanine reached by a spiral ramp. The built-in wood and glass furnishings are also composed of circle segments. Light is provided by a grid of interlocked translucent globes suspended above the circular space.

In 1979, the V.C. Morris Building was purchased by Xanadu Gallery, an upscale gallery with an extensive selection of Asian arts, Oceanic, and ethnographic works of art. Upon its purchase, they commissioned Aaron Green to oversee a million dollar restoration.

The V.C. Morris Gift Shop was listed in 2007 at number 126 on the American Institute of Architects' list of the 150 favorite buildings in America.

UK - London - Trafalgar Square: National Gallery
photo gallery
The National Gallery, located on the north side of Trafalgar Square, has over 2,300 paintings, most on permanent display. The collection ranges from early works by cimabue, in the 13th-century, to 19th-century Impressionists, but its particular strengths are in Dutch, early Renaissance Italian, and 17th -century Spanish painting.

The gallery has flourished to international reknown since its inception in the early 19th-century. In 1824 George IV persauded a reluctant government to buy 38 major paintings, including works by Raphael and Rembrandt, and these became the start of a national collction. The collection grew over the years as rich benefactors contributed works and money.

The main gallery was designed in Neo-Classical style by William Wilkins and built in 1834-38. Wilkins beat out John Nash, who proposed the location, in a design competition in 1832 with a desire to build "A Temple of the Arts." The building has been widely criticized by critics for an excessively long facade without bulk. This was largely unavoidable, however, because the site was set back to the north because of the protected vista of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, limited to the south because of a workhouse and barracks, and required to incorporate a public right of way through the site. Another stipulation of the design was the incorporation of the coluns of the demolished Carlton House. Nash's financial constraints led him to recycle the relief sculptures on the facade, which were originally intended for his Marble Arch.

The most important addition to the building in recent years has been the 1991 Sainsbury Wing, financed by the grocery chain family and designed by the leading postmodernist architect Robert Venturi, to house the collection of Renaissance paintings.

Now that I know that you can take photos inside the Birmingham Musuem & Art Gallery, thought I'd go along and take what I wanted (not the paintings).

This is in the part of the museum near Great Charles Street Queensway.

On Friday it opened at 10:30am and I got here just in time before the crowds showed up.

I mainly wanted to take the busts I previously saw in the art galleries.

Over the bridge (leaving the art galleries and Feeney Galleries behind me).

The round room of BM & AG.

Jabob Epstein's Lucifer ahead.

The impressive Round Room, with plain walls for hanging pictures and a low conical glass roof above a strapwork band of circles and hexagons.

Some cool photo gallery images:

Boston - Back Bay: Boston Public Library McKim Building - Sargent Gallery - Frieze of the Prophets and the Israelites Oppressed
photo gallery
The Sargent Gallery, a long high gallery located on the third floor of the Boston Public Library McKim Building, is named for the American painter John Singer Sargent, who spent years decorating its walls with the mural sequence, Triumph of Religion. The hall is 84-feet long, 23-feet wide, and 26-feet high, with vaulted ceiling, lighted from above. The mural was originally commissioned in 1890, and represents thirty years of labor completed in four installments--the paintings at the north end of the hall were completed in 1895, the south end wall in 1903, the niches and vaulting at the south end and the lunettes along the side wall in 1916, and the two panels over the staircase in 1919.

On the north wall, above the doorway to the Charlotte Cushman Room is the Frieze of the Prophets. The central figure is Moses holding the tablets brought down from Sinai. The 83-inch wide mural spans onto the west and east wall. On the west wall are Zephaniah, Joel, Obadiah, and Hosea. The north wall features, to the left of Moses, Amos Nahum, Ezekiel, Daniel, and Elijah; and to the right, Joshua, Jeremiah, Jonah, Isaih, and Habakkuk. On the east wall are Micah, Haggai, Malacchi, and Zechariah.

Above the frieze is the lunette, The Israelites Oppressed, or the Children of Israel. The pagan series is done in a blend of Egyptian and Assyrian styles combined with gilded Byzantine casts applied in relief to the surface. The representation of Israel is depicted beneath the yoke of its oppressors, represented by the Pharaoh and the Assyrian monarch. Above it, in the vaulting, on the left side is Pagan Gods, with Moloch, the god of material things on the left and Astarte, the goddess of sensuality, and the head of Neith on the right.

The Boston Public Library McKim Building, located on Boylston Street between Dartmouth and Exeter Streets, was built in 1895 by Charles Follen McKim of McKim, Mead & White. Consisting of a three-story, monumental free-standing block in the style of an Italian Renaissance palace surrounding an open courtyard, McKim's design was one of the earliest successful examples of Renaissance Beaux-Arts Classicism in America, and set the precedent for grand scale urban libraries. In 1972, the Philip Johnson-designed late modernist wing was added to the Central Library location. The Boston Public Library system, established in 1848, was the country's first publicly supported municipal library, its first large library open to the public and its first to allow citizens to borrow books. There are currently twenty-six branches in the system.

In 2007, Boston Public Library was ranked #90 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

I often take for granted the ease the working relationship is between Alexandra Rodionova and I. These pictures are a direct result of that comradery. If you where an onlooker on a shoot with Alex and I you would wonder why we hardly talk when we're right in the middle of taking pictures. Well, we don't need to communication, "stand this way, look that way, etc". We know each others every move. Thus is the benefit of working with a muse.
Alas, these days must come to an end. After 5 years of working together Alex is going her own way. So all I have now are there archived photo shoots to share. I'm sure once in awhile we'll team up again...
...in the mean time I guess I'm in the market for a new muse!

I went to the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery on Saturday 13th July 2013, to check out and exhibition with one of my photos on it.

In the Wild about Birmingham exhibition. Originating from Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum.

Wild about Birmingham - I mainly looked at the display with my photo of the BT Tower, and got to meet Lynsey, who I kept in touch via e-mail! Nice to finally meet her!

It has been at Blakesley Hall and Sarehole Mill, as well as BM & AG. It will also be at Aston Hall and Soho House, as well as Thinktank (Thinktank last week July and into August).

Obscurae Gallery's 2nd Annual Art Lottery
photo gallery
This Saturday is Obscurae Gallery's 2nd annual Art Lottery. Trust me, this will be a blast. Not only is there going to be great art in handmade frames. No. That wouldn't be enough. What about this being a show that is in support of a good cause, supporting Braddock?

No? Then there's more.

There's also going to be Jake Liefer of the Pittsburgh Area Coffee Association, setting up a coffee bar at the event. John Ryan Brubaker will be there with a traveling version of his Portrait Booth Project where you can travel back in time with your very own quirky portrait shot with a 1968 Polaroid on instant black and white film. Beer has been donated by Brillobox. (Yeah!) Add some wood-fired sweet and savory treats baked by local enthusiasts in the community oven, and this might be the best gallery show ever.

So, let's go down the list one last time. Amazing photography. Good beer. Time Traveling Photo Booths.

I rest my case.

The Silence of Maria, 2010

God's Enigmatic Silence.

Sometimes you want to shout so badly.
You want a reply, a shout to match your own.
Not from anyone, but from God himself, the Creator.
We want Him to offer us a hand.
He keeps His enigmatic silence.
And then the fear creeps in.
You can defeat the fear by practicing the same enigmatic silence, the silence of God.
Silent people are Godlike.
They are often accused of the sin of pride.
Even more often they get institutionalized in various sorts of hospitals.

"The Silence of Maria" is a series of 9 works based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew. (2:14-15, The Flight To Egypt)

Sweet, Sweet Galaxy by Pip & Pop

Smiths Row, The Market Cross, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 1BT
Tel: +44 (0) 1284 762081

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".
