The Parana River floodplain along the Mato Grosso--Sao Paulo border, Brazil is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 30 crew member on the International Space Station. The Parana River appears as a wide, blue strip across this photograph, with muddy brown water of the smaller Verde River entering from the northwest (top left). An extensive wetland (dark green) occupies most of the left half of the image, where the floodplain of the river reaches a width of 11 kilometers. The thin line of a road crossing the floodplain also gives a sense of scale. Above the Parana--Verde confluence (center) the floodplain is much narrower. The floodplain is generated by sediments delivered by both rivers. Evidence for this is that the entire surface of the floodplain is crisscrossed by the wider traces of former Parana R. channels as well as numerous narrower traces of the Verde R. The floodplains along both rivers are bordered by numerous rectangular agricultural fields. Dominant crops along this part of the Parana River are coffee, corn and cotton. Turbid water, such as that in the Verde River, is common in most rivers that drain plowed agricultural land as some topsoil is washed into local rivers after rains. A long tendril of brown water extends from the Verde R. into the main channel of the Parana River where it hugs the west bank, remaining unmixed for many kilometers. This effectively shows the direction of river flow from orbit (right to left for the Parana, upper left to center for the Verde).

Egypt--Israel Borderlands (NASA, International Space Station, 11/03/10)

Egypt--Israel borderlands, northern Sinai Peninsula and northern Negev Desert are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 29 crew member on the International Space Station. A clearly visible line that marks approximately 50 kilometers of the international border between Egypt and Israel - 10-60 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea to the northwest (not shown) - crosses the center of this photograph from left to right. The reason for the color difference is likely the slightly higher level of grazing by the animal herds of Bedouin herdsmen on the Egyptian side of the border. A major highway also follows the border, making the demarcation more prominent in this recent image taken from the space station. A patch of the Gaza Strip appears under scattered cloud at far right. In the arid to semiarid climate of the region illustrated in the image the natural grass vegetation is sparse at best. Irrigated commercial agriculture in Israel nearest the Mediterranean coast appears as a series of large angular patterns and circular center pivot fields, with darker greens indicating growing crops (right). Smaller plot sizes appear on the Egyptian side of the border at upper right. The image shows how the active sand dunes, which dominate most of the landscape in this view, mark the southern limit of the agriculture.

Northwestern North Dakota is one of the least-densely populated parts of the United States. Cities and people are scarce, but satellite imagery shows the area has been aglow at night in recent years. The reason: the area is home to the Bakken shale formation, a site where oil production is booming.

Companies hoping to extract oil from the Bakken formation have drilled hundreds of new wells in the last few years; natural gas often bubbles up to the surface as part of the process. Lacking the infrastructure to pipe the gas away, many drillers simply burn it in a practice known as flaring.

On November 12, 2012, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite captured this nighttime view of widespread gas flaring throughout the area. Many of the specks of light are evidence of gas flaring, though others may be the lights around drilling equipment. Some of the brighter areas correspond to towns and cities including Williston, Minot, and Dickinson.

The image was captured by the VIIRS “day-night band,” which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as gas flares, auroras, wildfires, city lights, and reflected moonlight. When VIIRS acquired the image, the moon was in its waning crescent phase, meaning it was reflecting only a small amount of light.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, natural gas production from the Bakken shale has increased more than 20-fold between 2007 and 2010. Gas production averaged over 485 million cubic feet per day in September 2011, compared to the 2005 average of about 160 million cubic feet per day. Due to the lack of gas pipeline and processing facilities in the region, about 29 percent of that gas is flared.

Space Invaders: Google Earth Edition

tom coates, jane mcgonigal, cal henderson, chris heathcote and others scramble to take eighty-some-odd squares of paper and "draw" a little space invader's action appropriate for the 2" resolution google earth imaging that took place at noon on saturday, exactly. a little red airplane flew laps over the o'reilly campus, initiating all kinds of weird oversized drawings, street chalking, and mostly lots of people laying down flat on the ground, on cue, hoping to be captured on Google Earth..supposedly this'll show up in Google Earth in a month or so..

Every year, near the spring equinox, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., hosts an extravaganza on the science of the sun and its interactions with Earth, a field known as heliophysics. On March 22, 2013, experts from Goddard visited both NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia’s eastern shore and the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore. The theme for the event was Solar Max – Storm Warning!

The day is part of a year long program of presentations and events – many hosted by museums and educators around the world – to celebrate the science of our connected sun-Earth system. Collectively, the events are known as Sun-Earth Days.
On Mar. 22, the Sun Earth Days team joined forces with the producers of NASA EDGE. NASA EDGE is an unscripted, non-traditional video podcast (vodcast) that combines funny, offbeat and informative sketches, features and interviews. NASA EDGE led a live webcast from Wallops, which is NASA's principal facility for management and implementation of suborbital research programs. Wallops is responsible for launching many of NASA’s Heliophysics sounding rockets.
The Mar. 22 event focused on how active and dynamic the sun is as it nears the peak of solar activity, known as solar maximum, expected to occur in 2013. Participants included, among others: Goddard solar scientist Alex Young, who discussed NASA’s heliophysics space missions, which help scientists better understand what causes the giant explosions on the sun such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections; Dan Smith, a scientist at Johns Hopkins’ Advanced Physics Laboratory, who discussed the Van Allen Probes mission studying Earth’s radiation belts; and Goddard space scientist Doug Rowland, who discussed a sounding rocket mission called VISIONS that studied streams of oxygen produced during aurora called the auroral wind.

During the webcast, the team announced the first two -- of an eventual five total -- winners of the Sun-Earth Days’ Anime Contest, a contest to create super hero sidekicks for SolarMAX, the official super hero mascot for NASA’s Sun-Earth Days. The winners were Maria Malcia, an 8th grader at the National High School of Computer Science in Tudor Vianu, Bucharest for a superhero called Aurora and WooKyung Lee at Suyvesant High School in New York City for a superhero named Queen Solaris.

At the Maryland Science Center, over 2,000 children participated in hands-on activities with Goddard educators. The children learned about the solar cycle, solar maximum, space weather and how space weather can affect orbiting spacecraft and even technology here on Earth. Up on the roof top, visitors could observe the sun through a solar telescope as well as experiment with special beads that change color in response to the sun’s ultraviolet light.

Live Earth View from Space

They have an incredible exhibit of the view of Earth from space at the Tech Museum. It's a sphere-shaped screen (3 dimensional), with four projectors projecting a rotating, moving image of the Earth. I don't know if the cloud cover was updated in real time (like XPlanet), but the effect was incredible. I found myself mesmerized by it - I SO want one of these in my office! A giant version of "Earth" from Snow Crash. Awesome. :-)

Parts of the U.S. and Mexico are seen in this image photographed by one of the Expedition 29 crew members from the International Space Station as it flew above the Pacific Ocean on Nov. 16, 2011. The Salton Sea is in the center of the frame, with the Gulf of Cortez, Mexico's Baja California and the Colorado River in the upper right quadrant. The Los Angeles Basin and Santa Catalina and San Clemente islands are at the bottom center edge of the image. Lake Mead and the Las Vegas area of Nevada even made it into the frame in the upper left quadrant.

(From 2007) Backdropped by Earth's horizon and the blackness of space, the International Space Station appears to be very small as it moves away from Space Shuttle Endeavour. Earlier the STS-118 and Expedition 15 crews concluded nearly nine days of cooperative work onboard the shuttle and station. Undocking of the two spacecraft occurred at 6:56 a.m. (CDT) on Aug. 19, 2007. The lower portion of Italy is visible at left.

Auroras light up the Antarctic night

On July 15, 2012, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite captured this nighttime view of the aurora australis, or “southern lights,” over Antartica’s Queen Maud Land and the Princess Ragnhild Coast.

The image was captured by the VIIRS “day-night band,” which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as city lights, auroras, wildfires, and reflected moonlight. In the case of the image above, the sensor detected the visible auroral light emissions as energetic particles rained down from Earth’s magnetosphere and into the gases of the upper atmosphere. The slightly jagged appearance of the auroral lines is a function of the rapid dance of the energetic particles at the same time that the satellite is moving and the VIIRS sensor is scanning.

The yellow box in the top image depicts the area shown in the lower close-up image. Light from the aurora was bright enough to illuminate the ice edge between the ice shelf and the Southern Ocean. At the time, Antarctica was locked in midwinter darkness and the Moon was a waning crescent that provided little light.

Puyehue-Cordón Caulle [high res]

NASA image acquired December 23, 2011

In early June 2011, Chile’s Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcano erupted explosively, sending volcanic ash around the Southern Hemisphere. In late December 2011, activity at the volcano had calmed, but volcanic ash and steam continued to pour through the fissure that opened several months earlier.

The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this natural-color image on December 23, 2011. The active fissure lies northwest of the Puyehue caldera, and a plume blows from the fissure toward the west and north. This image shows not just ash but also snow on the volcano surface, including the caldera. Because volcanic ash regularly coats the land surface, the pristine snow probably fell recently.

In a bulletin issued December 26, 2011, Chile’s Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería (SERNAGEOMIN) characterized the activity over the previous 24 hours as a minor eruption of low intensity.

Reaching an altitude of 2,236 meters (7,336 feet), Puyehue-Cordón Caulle is a stratovolcano, a steep-sloped, conical volcano composed of layers of ash, lava, and rocks released by previous eruptions. This volcano comprises part of the largest active geothermal area in the southern Andes.

A nighttime view of Istanbul, Turkey is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 32 crew member on the International Space Station. Most of Istanbul's Asian suburbs (right) appear in this night view from the space station, but only about half the area of the city on the European side (left) can be seen. The margins of the metropolitan area are clearly visible at night, more so than in daylight images. The Bosporus strait (also spelled Bosphorus) (center left) famously separates the two halves of the city, and links the small Sea of Marmara (and the Mediterranean Sea to its south) to the Black Sea (indistinguishable in this night view, top right). The strait is 31 kilometers long, most of which is visible in this view. The Bosporus is a very busy waterway, with larger ships passing to and from the Black Sea competing with numerous ferries that cross between the two halves of the city. Apart from the dark Sea of Marmara (lower margin of the image), the other large dark areas are all wooded hills which provide open spaces for the densely populated city of Istanbul -- one of the largest in Europe with 13.5 million inhabitants. The old city occupies the prominent point at the entrance to the strait. Major traffic arteries are the brighter lines crossing the metropolitan area, and also mark all the shorelines. The First Bosporus Bridge and Second Bridge (also known as the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge) can be seen spanning the strait. The brilliant lights of both international airports serving the region also stand out at lower left and lower right.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — NASA's Dawn spacecraft was captured into orbit around the massive asteroid Vesta after a 1.7 billion-mile journey and is preparing to begin a study of a surface that may date to the earliest era of the solar system, the space agency said Monday.

The entry into orbit occurred while the spacecraft's antenna was pointed away from Earth, so mission controllers had to wait for Dawn to re-establish contact to confirm its success.

The capture was estimated to have occurred at 10 p.m. PDT Friday, when Dawn was 9,900 miles from Vesta and 117 million miles from Earth in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, according to a statement from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

"We are beginning the study of arguably the oldest extant primordial surface in the solar system," the mission's principal investigator, Christopher Russell from the University of California, Los Angeles, said in the statement.

NASA said that after the orbital capture, Dawn sent an initial close-up image taken for navigation purposes. Before the Dawn mission, images of Vesta were obtained by ground- and space-based telescopes but did not show much surface detail.

Vesta, 330 miles in diameter, is the second-most massive object in the asteroid belt and is believed to be the source of many meteorites that fall to Earth.

Dawn will continue to approach Vesta over the next three weeks, search for possible moons and make more navigation images. It begins gathering science data in August. Vesta's gravitational pull on Dawn will be measured to more accurately determine the asteroid's mass.

The spacecraft will eventually get as close as 110 miles from the surface.

Dawn was launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla., in 2007 and used an ion propulsion system to reach Vesta. Ion engines provide gentle yet constant acceleration to achieve high speeds.

The spacecraft will study Vesta for a year and then continue on to the most massive object in the main asteroid belt, the "dwarf planet" Ceres. That encounter is scheduled to occur in February 2015.

JPL is managing the 6 million mission for NASA. UCLA is responsible for the mission's science. The German Aerospace Center, the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, the Italian Space Agency and the Italian National Astrophysical Institute also have roles in the mission.

Esquivel fue llevado a Nueva York en 1958 Donde, intrigado por la nueva tecnología, grabó su primer disco en sonido estéreo: Other Worlds, Other Sounds, Nominado a un grammy (ya sé, eso qué importa, pero había que decirlo) aquí Esquivel Toca el piano y preparó los arreglos para una orqueta de 26 piezas y seis coristas. Coristas voladores haciéndole "zu-zu!," "ooh" y "ah" espolvorean pisadas de piano sobre nosotros, las guitarras cruzan el cielo como azaetas por la izquierda y por la derecha, Todo es parte del encanto en estéreo. El uso dinámico de este sistema de grabación de dos canales es muy inventivo en este disco, este juego con el estéreo es otro sello de esquivel. Pero bueno, no sé porqué me preocupo en describir este disco si sé que muchos de ustedes bajarán (y comprarán, claro) este álbum Tan sólo por la cosmic hottie de la portada. Este disco es fácil de conseguir y aún está a la venta, lo realmente interesante de este álbum es que desde aquí ya empezamos a sentir los rasgos futuristas del estilo "Esquivel!"

The Moon over Klamath Point, California
Were I to spent half as much time putting together blog posts as I do running about with my camera or post-processing images - I might actually have a decent blog going here. One image per day projects, I find, leave me with 25 or so outstanding images at year's end and 340, well, other images. I wanted to focus on the 25 images worth sharing.
When I have an image I really like, I tend to delay posting it - often planning to post it as part of a series or alongside thoughts not yet worked into words. The upshot of this strategy is that there are often images that I love which are greatly delayed in making their appearance on the blog. This is one such image.
We ate soup from the tin, heated in a camp stove on Klamath Point. The big intertidal swells were rolling in strong. We waited until long after the sun sank below the marine boundary layer and violet enveloped the Earth so as to catch the moon just above a massive boulder on the beach. Two stones from the same soup, separated by a few billion years and a frame of beautiful, negative space. This frame is a perfect example of the compressive effect of memory. We spent many nights in and around the redwood forests, but this evening stands out above the others. Looking at the image, I can taste the beer we had after dinner and feel the dark, bluster of cold evening rolling in from offshore.

Extensive Ice Fractures in the Beaufort Sea [annotated]

The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite captured this view of extensive sea-ice fracturing off the northern coast of Alaska. The event began in late-January and spread west toward Banks Island throughout February and March 2013.

Visualizations of the Arctic often give the impression that the ice cap is a continuous sheet of stationary, floating ice. In fact, it is a collection of smaller pieces that constantly shift, crack, and grind against one another as they are jostled by winds and ocean currents. Especially during the summer—but even during the height of winter—cracks—or leads—open up between pieces of ice.

That was what was happening on the left side of the animation (seen here: bit.ly/10kE7sh) in late January. A high-pressure weather system was parked over the region, producing warmer temperatures and winds that flowed in a southwesterly direction. That fueled the Beaufort Gyre, a wind-driven ocean current that flows clockwise. The gyre was the key force pulling pieces of ice west past Point Barrow, the northern nub of Alaska that protrudes into the Beaufort Sea.

“A fracturing event in this area is not unusual because the Beaufort Gyre tends to push ice away from Banks Island and the Canadian Archipelago,” explained Walt Meier of the National Snow & Ice Data Center (NSIDC). “Point Barrow can act like a ‘pin point’ where the ice catches and fractures to the north and east.”

In February, however, a series of storms passing over central Alaska exacerbated the fracturing. Strong westerly winds prompted several large pieces of ice to break away in an arc-shaped wave that moved progressively east. By the end of February, large pieces of ice had fractured all the way to the western coast of Banks Island, a distance of about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles).

The data used to create the animation came from the longwave infrared (thermal) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, so the animation illustrates how much heat the surface was emitting as VIIRS surveyed the area. Cooler areas (sea ice) appear white, while warmer areas (open water) are dark. The light gray plume near the cracks is warmer, moister air escaping from the ocean and blowing downwind. Clouds do not show up well in the VIIRS thermal band, so the storms that fueled the fracturing are not readily visible.

While fracturing events are common, few events sprawl across such a large area or produce cracks as long and wide as those seen here. The age of the sea ice in this area was one of the key reasons this event became so widespread. “The region is covered almost completely by seasonal or first-year ice—ice that has formed since last September,” said Meier. “This ice is thinner and weaker than the older, multi-year ice, so it responds more readily to winds and is more easily broken up.”
