Okinawa Soba posted several hand-tinted stereoimages of early 20th century Japan. This image of the second Ferris wheel in Japan dates to 1907. Note that the comments below the original image are rich with history on the subject.

The purpose here is not to duplicate the original image, from Okinawa Soba's stream, but to generate an animated gif to assist viewing. Unfortunately, animation is not automatic - to animate you must view the image at original resolution (click all sizes) or simply scroll down.

Okinawa Soba posted several CC licensed stereoimages by T. Enami documenting life in early 20th century Japan (the Meiji period). The original hand tinted image (circa 1898), presented for parallel viewing and showing a pilgrim walking into the misty forest is one of many remarkable stereo compositions. This animated gif version exploits motion parallax to give a stereo illusion without eyestrain, to see what the photographer envisioned.

What your boss's smile may be bad news: Study finds employers save best grins for those lower in the pecking order

When you smile at your boss and he beams back, you might assume it means he is happy with your work.

But don’t be fooled – he may just be taking pity on you.

A study has found that those who feel powerful tend not to smile back at important people, saving their smiles instead for those below them in the pecking order.

Sleazy grin: A study has found that those who feel powerful save their smiles for those below them in the pecking order

..............................
.

Researcher Evan Carr said: ‘Our interpretation of this is that when you are feeling powerful and see a low-status person, you are almost throwing them a bone, thinking “Oh, I should smile at this person because I’m better than them”.’

It is well known that we tend to mimic other people’s body language, but Mr Carr wanted to see how we copy facial expressions and whether power and status are important.

.

He asked 55 young men and women to write about a time when they felt powerful – such as leaving home to go to university – or powerless.

They were then hooked up to equipment that measures the activity of key facial muscles, and were asked to watch short video clips of people with jobs with different levels of prestige, who were smiling or frowning at them.

As they watched, the equipment measured the activity of the zygomaticus major – the ‘smiling muscle’ that raises the corner of the mouth.

It also gave readouts for the corrugator supercilii, the ‘frowning muscle’ that furrows the brow and is frozen by Botox.

The results showed that the volunteers were more likely to scowl in response to a frown from a doctor or someone in a position of power.

These frowns were also more intense, the Society for Neuroscience’s annual conference in New Orleans heard.

But it was the volunteers’ responses to smiling faces that were really telling.

The ugly truth: Evan Carr's research suggests the less appealing reasons why your boss might be smiling at you

................................
.

The men and women who felt powerful tended not to smile back at high-fliers.

But they did return the smiles of those who were lower down the pecking order – and their smiles were bigger.

Meanwhile, those who felt powerless smiled at everyone, regardless of their rank.

The researchers think that people who feel powerful try to exert their dominance by not appearing too friendly to those who might be a threat. They have no such qualms about appearing approachable to those who lack authority.

Changes in the volunteers’ expressions were too small to be seen by the eye but Mr Carr, from the University of California, says clearly visible smiles may follow the same pattern.

He said it is likely that the decision to suppress or return a smile occurs subconsciously.

Entry for the competition of Young Lions Greece 2010

Art Director:

Special thanks to:
Lefteris Koulonis

This is my entry for the Young Lions Competion 2010 for the print category. We were asked to create a meaningful message addressed to girls suffering from eating disorders and anorexia in particular.
Our aim was to dispel the myth that the person who suffers from anorexia
is skinny. This is actually one of the last stages of the disease.

Therefore we chose to use the picture of a girl who looks happy and has
an average body type. In the copy she states some of the things she does which are clear indications of anorexia.

For example: she gets nervous when she looks at herself in the mirror, avoids eating, frozes her food so that it won’t smell and can easily dispose of it under her mother’s nose etc

Our idea was to show that a person suffering from anorexia isn’t aware of the fact that it is a disease. What one sees while looking at the poster is a girl smiling and next to her the headline that reads:
Anorexia? no, I'm fine...

The VERY first print is the one in the top left. Overexposed the paper quite a bit.

And yeah, when the paper is dipped into the developer, and the image starts to form, that's a rather magical moment...

And I stood nervous next to you in the dark room
You dropped the paper in the water
And it all begins to bloom
Yeah, they go wild...

“I like any kind of food. Whatever’s there, I buy it. Hot dog one day, the next Chinese food, roast beef sandwich.” — Walter, Philadelphia, homeless

In the winter of 1985, Philadelphia Inquirer photographer Tom Gralish steps out or his life and into the lives of the city’s street people. "I didn't know much about these guys. So I decided to show what their day is like. I wanted it to be straightforward 'doc photography.’ Go out and sec what you can find."

Gralish walks the streets with his camera. "I hooked up with one little group. It was like a community — enough vendors to be nice to them, enough steam grates, a liquor store nearby, a hospital, lots of commuters to panhandle — everything they needed."

Some men live on fire escapes; others in alleys. Walter lives on a sidewalk heating grate. "Walter is one of the guys who is hard to reach because he talks to himself and rants to people on the street. Everyone knows him; people who live and work in the neighborhood give him change. He was one of those guys who was hot and cold to me."

Eventually, Walter allows Gralish to photograph him- "People like it when you pay attention to them. These guys had disdain for society and the rules: that's why they objected to the shelters. They saw themselves as the last free men."

I haven't uploaded a photo for a while, its winter time and I'm not so much of an active photographer during the winter. Its just so cold here.

But I looked through my photostream and I noticed that I never uploaded this photo to Flickr when I was shooting the car show in Manchester, NH.

Funny story, as we were leaving the car show and the General Lee was following from behind and people were cheering us because how often do you see two tv/movie cars together on the road? Not so often. But the guy in the General Lee flagged us down and we ended up doing a little photoshoot.

The General Lee you see there was actually used in the original TV series.
