. . . There are words inside her, waiting to be born.

She feels them growing, forming, becoming thoughts that might later work themselves into sentences to be spoken aloud.

Now, they are nothing but jagged letters with sharp edged corners poking at her, making her uncomfortable. She can’t seem to put them together in any way that softens them.

She soon realizes they will always be hard and sharp. They will always be hard to get out.

It might be easier to keep them inside, let them remain a struggling mess of letters and sounds that will hurt no one but her.

Where the rivers start
The Rockies are the source of a few rivers, and here is one of them. I can't remember the name of it for sure (although I am sure some of my smart readers can), but I am pretty sure this is the Yellowstone (or maybe the Madison?) river, flowing westward out of the park. This part of the river is impossible to see from the road. I had to pull over and then walk over a tiny little hill/mountain to get there. I stayed at the top, listening to my ipod, waiting for the sun to set... It was all quite serene, as you can see! :)

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.

Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

Technically it's tomorrow... but not really. I hate the early morning.

Sorry for the late post, I had an essay due and that took precedence.

I'm borrowing an idea from Christene, extending it a bit. I widened the pleats, and turned the center into a sunken point instead of a spread one. Hopefully more on this theme later...

By the way, some of you will remember Daniel's Pentagonal grid.... This piece was made with a similar idea, parsed onto the octagon. It doesn't work out as well-- the more sides to the polygon, the more reference points you'll end up with-- but it's a useful method of finding creases that I'd otherwise have to approximate, which would be messy.

Due to the low river level, the fossil beds were clearly visible at the Falls of the Ohio State Park. To get an idea of how vast this area is, people can be seen standing near the center of the photo on the rocky bank as it sticks out into the Ohio River.

A mother practices skin-to-skin contact in the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) Unit of Bwaila Hospital. Simple tools such as hand washing, birth supervised by a skilled provider, frequent skin-to-skin contact, and exclusive breast feeding can have a huge impact on newborn and maternal health. Where all of these elements come together, neonatal deaths can be reduced by 50 percent or more. (Lilongwe, Malawi, 2010)

A conference of Nordic and Baltic music Libraries on 30-31.08.2007 at Sibeliusakatemia, Helsinki. An interesting event with a load of nice and motivated people. I've heard the IAML (Internation Association of Music Libraries), IFLA (Internation Fededation of Library Assosiations) etc. large conferences are much more boring than these smaller, quite relaxed meetings. There were about 130 people, most of them (us) from scandinavia and the Baltic countries. Mostly we heard reports of local digitizing projects, but there were also broader presentations. I gave a presentation too, titled User aspect to electronically distributed music and in all my modesty i must say it went pretty well and i got a lot of positive feedback for it. I also held a little tour of Töölö and Library 10 (alias Kirjasto 10) on thursday.

On the following day, 1.9. we went to Porvoo for the day with a crowd of perhaps 20 people.

Shout-outs to all the participants <3

Students Using Library Card Catalog, 1953
photo library
Collection: Benedictine University Archives, Benedictine University Library

Title: April 2012 Photo of the Month: [Students using library card catalog, 1953]

Date: 1953

Place: North America: U.S.; Lisle, IL; Benedictine Hall, Library

Type: 5x7 Photograph

Description:
Ben U’s library began in a small room in the northeast corner of Benedictine (Ben) Hall and by 1915 had expanded to two rooms containing about 7000 volumes between them. The faculty, recognizing that the college needed more and better resources to support its academic programs, led a 1918 effort to select and purchase several thousand additional volumes. In 1922, Rev. Adolph Hrdlicka, O.S.B., was appointed College Librarian. Under his leadership over the next five decades, the library greatly expanded its services and collections and received national recognition as one of the best small Catholic college libraries.

In 1927, the library moved to the ground floor of Ben Hall (later the South Cafeteria / Ben Central area ) to accommodate growth in collections and staff and to provide more study space for students. It remained there until the newly constructed Lownik Library (now Lownik Hall) opened in 1963. Lownik provided more study space as well as “state of the art” tools such as card catalogs and, eventually, computers. In 2001, the library moved again to Kindlon Hall of Learning where its offerings now include 200,000 print and electronic books, access to over 30,000 print and electronic periodicals, computers, printers, and group study rooms. The card catalog, however, is a thing of the past. In summer 2012, the library will again undergo a move as its space in Kindlon is remodeled.

DC: US Capitol - View from Capitol Reflecting Pool
photo sites
The United States Capitol, located on top of Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall, serves as the seat of government for the United States Congress, the legislative branch of the U.S. federal government. Designed by a succession of architects, the neoclassical building is marked by its dome above a rotunda and two wings, one for each chamber of Congress: the north wing is the Senate chamber and the south wing is the House of Representatives chamber. With but one brief interruption, the Capitol has housed the legislative chambers of the U.S. Congress since 1800, and housed the U.S. Supreme Court from 1800 until 1935. Presidential inaugurations are traditionally held here, the physical symbol of the United States of America.

When Pierre Charles L'Enfant planned the city, he chose Jenkins Hill, which rose 88 feet above the Potomac River, as the site for the new Capitol Building. The following year, a public design competition was held and amateur architect, William Thornton, inspired by the east front of the Louvre and the Roman Pantheon, was selected by Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Execution was entrusted to Étienne Sulpice (Stephen) Hallet, a runner up in the competition, under the supervision of James Hoban. The cornerstone was laid by Washington on September 18, 1793. In 1795, Jefferson, vocal in his preference for Thornton's classical design, dismissed Hallet and George Hadfield was hired as superintendent of construction, only to resign three years later. In 1803, Benjamin Latrobe replaced him as Architect of the Capitoland, against his protestations, saw Thornton's design to near fruition.

The Capitol held its first session of United States Congress on November 17, 1800 in a then unfinished building. The Senate wing was completed that year, and the House of Representative wing was completed in 1811. In August 1814, the Capitol was partially burned by the British during the War of 1812. Reconstruction began under Latrobe, who was given more latitude to make alterations, in 1815 completed by 1819. Under Charles Bulfinch, who took over as Architect of the Capitol in 1918, construction continued through to 1826, with the addition of the center Rotunda area and the first dome of the Capitol.

The building was expanded dramatically in the 1850's under Thomas U. Walter, who was responsible for the wing extensions and the new "wedding cake" cast-iron dome, three times the height of the original dome and 100 feet (30 m) in diameter, which had to be supported on the existing masonry piers. The double dome consists of a large oculus in the inner dome, through which is seen The Apotheosis of Washington painted on a shell suspended from the supporting ribs, which also support the visible exterior structure and the tholos that supports the Freedom, a colossal statue that was added to the top of the dome in 1863. The weight of the cast-iron for the dome has been published as 8,909,200 pounds.

When the dome was finally completed, it was significantly larger than the original plan, and its massive visual weight overpowered the proportions of the columns of the East Portico. The East Front was rebuilt in 1904, following a design of Carrère and Hastings. A marble duplicate of the sandstone East Front was built 33.5 feet from the old Front during 1958-1962, and a connecting extension incorporated what formerly was an outside wall as an inside wall. In the process, the Corinthian columns were removed, and landscape designer Russell Page created a suitable setting for them in a large meadow at the National Arboretum, where they are combined with a reflecting pool.

The current Capitol Grounds, cover approximately 274 acres, were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who planned the expansion and landscaping performed from 1874 to 1892. In 1875, as one of his first recommendations, Olmsted proposed the construction of the marble terraces on the north, west, and south sides of the building that exist today.

In 2007, the U.S. Capitol was ranked #6 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

IT LOOKS THAT THIS PICTURE COMES FROM A MOVIE SET, I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT AWAY BECAUSE IT REPRESENTS ANYWAY THE CHINESE STYLE TO SOLVE THEIR POLITICAL PROBLEMS, WITH LIES AND VIOLENCE

SE VI DOMANDATE PERCHE' I MONACI CHE AVETE VISTO IN TV ERANO COSI' VIOLENTI, E' PERCHE' NON ERANO VERI MONACI MA ELEMENTI DELL' ESERCITO CINESE INFILTRATI PER SCREDITARLI

Just in case you wondered why these 'Tibetan monks' were so violent in
Lhasa.... because they were NOT monks, but chinese soldiers.... Chinese
soldiers posing as Tibetan monks during the riots
Canada Free Press[Friday, March 21, 2008 10:20] Brit spies confirm Dalai
Lama's report of staged violence
By Gordon Thomas
London, March 20 - Britain's GCHQ, the government communications agency that
electronically monitors half the world from space, has confirmed the claim
by the Dalai Lama that agents of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the
PLA, posing as monks, triggered the riots that have left hundreds of
Tibetans dead or injured.
GCHQ analysts believe the decision was deliberately calculated by the
Beijing leadership to provide an excuse to stamp out the simmering unrest in
the region, which is already attracting unwelcome world attention in the
run-up to the Olympic Games this summer.
For weeks there has been growing resentment in Lhasa, Tibet's capital,
against minor actions taken by the Chinese authorities.
Increasingly, monks have led acts of civil disobedience, demanding the right
to perform traditional incense burning rituals. With their demands go cries
for the return of the Dalai Lama, the 14th to hold the high spiritual
office.
Committed to teaching the tenets of his moral authority---peace and
compassion---the Dalai Lama was 14 when the PLA invaded Tibet in 1950 and he
was forced to flee to India from where he has run a relentless campaign
against the harshness of Chinese rule.
But critics have objected to his attraction to film stars. Newspaper magnate
Rupert Murdoch has called him: 'A very political monk in Gucci shoes.'
Discovering that his supporters inside Tibet and China would become even
more active in the months approaching the Olympic Games this summer, British
intelligence officers in Beijing learned the ruling regime would seek an
excuse to move and crush the present unrest.
That fear was publicly expressed by the Dalai Lama. GCHQ's satellites,
geo-positioned in space, were tasked to closely monitor the situation.
The doughnut-shaped complex, near Cheltenham racecourse, is set in the
pleasant Cotswolds in the west of England. Seven thousand employees include
the best electronic experts and analysts in the world. Between them they
speak more than 150 languages. At their disposal are 10,000 computers, many
of which have been specially built for their work.
The images they downloaded from the satellites provided confirmation the
Chinese used agent provocateurs to start riots, which gave the PLA the
excuse to move on Lhasa to kill and wound over the past week.
What the Beijing regime had not expected was how the riots would spread, not
only across Tibet, but also to Sichuan, Quighai and Gansu provinces, turning
a large area of western China into a battle zone.
The Dalai Lama has called it 'cultural genocide' and has offered to resign
as head of the protests against Chinese rule in order to bring peace. The
current unrest began on March 10, marking the anniversary of the 1959
Uprising against Chinese rule.
However, his followers are not listening to his 'message of compassion.'
Many of them are young, unemployed and dispossessed and reject his
philosophy of non-violence, believing the only hope for change is the
radical action they are now carrying out.
For Beijing, the urgent need to find a solution to the uprising is one of
growing embarrassment. In two weeks time, the national celebrations for the
Olympic Games start with the traditional torch relay. The torch bearers are
scheduled to pass through Tibet. But the torch could find itself being
carried by runners past burning buildings and temples.
A sign of this urgency is that the Chinese prime minister has now said he is
prepared to hold talks with the Dalai Lama. Just before this announcement,
Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown declared he would meet the Dalai Lama,
who is to visit London next month. This is the first time either leader has
proposed to meet the Dalai Lama.

Nueva ventana acoplable Sugerencias.

Nueva herramienta Relleno inteligente. Permite aplicar un relleno a cualquier área cerrada.
Nueva herramienta Recortar.

1952 Mercedes W194 (06)
image post
The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was introduced in 1954 as a two-seat, closed sports car with distinctive gull-wing doors. Later it was offered as an open roadster. It was the fastest production car of its day.

Built by Daimler-Benz AG and internally numbered W198, the fuel-injected road version was based (somewhat loosely) on the company's highly successful competition-only sports car of 1952, the somewhat less powerful carbureted Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W194).

The road model was suggested by Max Hoffman. Being intended for customers in the booming post-war American market it was introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show, unlike previous models introduced at either the Frankfurt or Geneva shows. In Mercedes-Benz fashion, the "300" referred to the engine's three litre cylinder displacement. The "SL" stood for "Sport Leicht" (Sport Light).

The 300SL was best known for both its distinctive gull wing doors and being the first-ever four-stroke car equipped with a gasoline direct injection. The gull wing version was available from March 1955 to 1957. Production of the roadster ended in 1963 with the introduction of the 230SL.

In 1952, the original 300SL (model Mercedes-Benz W194) scored overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in Bern-Bremgarten, in the sportscar race of the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring, and in Mexico's Carrera Panamericana. It also managed second and fourth places at its first outing, the Mille Miglia in 1952.

These successes, especially those on the high speed open road races, were rather surprising as the engine then was fitted only with carburetors, producing 175 hp (130 kW), which was not only less than the competing cars by Ferrari and Jaguar, but also less than the road car of 1954. Low weight and low aerodynamic drag made the 300SL fast enough to be competitive in endurance races.

This frame has not been cropped. The following post processing has been added: auto-tone, bleach bypass, medium grain, light fill and black clipping. The dark spots are not dirt on the lens, they are flies.

This is not a posed or staged picture. It was spur of the moment as the car I was in left the rubbish dump. I caught just two frames hanging out the window and this is the best of them.

Nice Cat Image photos

A few nice cat image images I found:

Cat scans - 3D compilation
cat image
Image by Striving to a goal
NOTE: I DID NOT TAKE THESE PICTURES. That being said, I must state that they could not have been taken without me, because they are pictures *of* me. Each of the images actually started as a series of cat scans that were given to me on a disc after they were taken (I had to have my sinuses examined). I used a specialized program on the disc to compile each series into a 3-dimensional "model". Using the program, I can rotate each image and zoom in and out... I think it's the coolest thing to be able to see images of the inside of my head, even though it's mostly empty! <:-o

Cyber Cat

--

I always liked science fiction films. It's true that I like Matrix, Equilibrium and other films that in my opinion, know using special effects without losing history, but the certain thing is that the old sci-fi films, are thousand of times eerier, they pay more attention to cyberpunk. Instead of a lot of progress, a lot of future and a lot of blasters, they show the future like a declining and chaotic time, a time in which the power prevails over everything and everybody, the corruption is the most habitual and most of the society lives subjugated and watched, with its corresponding small rebellious group.

The black cinema airs ends the work. It's not wrong to think that it could happen, because the fashion, like History, is cyclical.

And all of this is fantastic to imagine it with adults carrying out those lives but… and the children? And infantile innocence? Surely that the Nature is wise, and it will manage to get ahead them… I want to think that the only difference, will be that their cuddly toys will be of fluorescent colors and will be decorated with neon…
