Day 295 - Kiki's Delivery Service
photo services
I took a photo yesterday of Shadow while I was looking for an inspirational movie. As I was looking at the photo, I saw both Shadow (pictured with me) and one of my all-time favorite movies, Kiki's Delivery Service. I was thus inspired to take this photo.

I've you haven't seen the movie, you ought to. The black cat Jiji was voiced by Phil Hartman in his last performance before he was killed. I don't know if it is an urban legend, but I understand that Jiji went silent because Phil was murdered—which I doubt since the original is Japanese and I think the difference between a talking Jiji and a silent one would be too striking.

Anyways, great movie. It is my perfect nap movie, and puts me to sleep with the gentle story and music almost every time.

This is my two hundred ninety fifth self portrait for 365 Days.

10 September 2007

Sorry for the low quality, but Shadow wasn't available to re-take!

"Ragged Old Flag" by Johnny Cash

I walked through a county courthouse square
On a park bench, an old man was sittin' there.
I said, "Your old court house is kinda run down,
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town".
I said, "Your old flag pole is leaned a little bit,
And that's a ragged old flag you got hangin' on it".
He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down,
"Is this the first time you've been to our little town"
I said, "I think it is"
He said "I don't like to brag, but we're kinda proud of
That Ragged Old Flag

"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there,
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
and It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it,
writing "Say Can You See"
It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson
tugging at its seams.
and It almost fell at the Alamo
beside the Texas flag,
But she waved on though.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville,
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on
That Ragged Old Flag

"On Flanders Field in World War I,
She got a big hole from a Bertha Gun,
She turned blood red in World War II
She hung limp, and low, a time or two,
She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent
by her Uncle Sam.
She waved from our ships upon the briny foam
and now they've about quit wavin' back here at home
in her own good land here She's been abused,
She's been burned, dishonored, denied an' refused,
And the government for which she stands
Has been scandalized throughout out the land.
And she's getting thread bare, and she's wearin' thin,
But she's in good shape, for the shape she's in.
Cause she's been through the fire before
and i believe she can take a whole lot more.

"So we raise her up every morning
And we bring her down slow every night,
We don't let her touch the ground,
And we fold her up right.
On second thought
I *do* like to brag
Cause I'm mighty proud of
That Ragged Old Flag"

Image by gwilmore (I HATE THE NEW LAYOUT!)
During the weekend I uploaded this portrait, I did not take a single new picture. This one was already two weeks old when I pulled it from my archives and went to work on it. And it did require quite a bit of work, although I liked the basic image when I saw it on my LCD screen, and later on my computer. I wish I had had better lighting for it, though.

I am putting it here now as a sort of trial balloon. Depending on what kind of reception it gets, I might decide later on to replace it, or perhaps remove it from my stream altogether. Meanwhile, it is probably the last photo from that shoot that I will be putting on Flickr, although Amanda might contact me again soon and tell me it's time for me to show up once more at MacAlpine's to attend another of her one-on-one photography classes. :-)

I could not resist uploading one more shot of the same car, since I felt the presence of some flickr fans around here ...See another detail of the same beauty here...

This shot is the result of a multiple exposure process and experimenting. I used three shots +-1 stop each, combined them with Photomatrix Pro and produced a tonemapped file. Then, I used one of the three elements (the most dark) to combine it with the tonemapped file and created another version of hdr, the 'highlights and shadows'. Finally, I combined the first tonemaped file with the latter (highlights and shadows) and got the work file which I then processed with photoshop in order to get rid of some background items with various tools and filters, and to finaly crop the image to a desired size. Oughghghgh....that was it!

The Victor

A few nice nature image images I found:

The Victor
nature image
In this image, the heroic hummer has drive off the bird that had been in front of it at my sister's feeder. Of course, during the period that he was putting the other bird to flight, thirteen other birds took his place at the feeder. If only they could all get along. But, that's not the hummingbird way.

Strobist Info: The feeder was in shadow while the trees in the background were in full sunlight, so I put bare strobes on light stands on either side of the feeder in order to balance the light on the hummingbirds with the light on the trees. Without the flash, the birds were in shadow. The YN560-II and YN560 were in manual mode and were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. These birds move around so fast that focus is extremely difficult. What I ended up doing was to put the camera on a tripod, manually focus on an area and then use a remote trigger when a bird flew into the area. About 1/3 of my images turned out acceptably sharp. This one was borderline, but I liked having the fleeing bird in the picture. Below in the 1st comment you can see an exposure without the strobes.

Other hummingbird pictures that I have taken over the years can be seen in my Hummingbirds set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157627149575339/...

Image by PROYECTO AGUA** /** WATER PROJECT

Church of Peace
photo sizes
Get the large view!

The Church of Peace (German: Friedenskirche) is situated in the Marly Gardens on the Green Fence in the palace grounds of Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, Germany. The church was built according to the wishes and with the close involvement of the artistically gifted King Frederick William IV, and designed by the court architect Ludwig Persius. After Persius' death in 1845 the architect Friedrich August Stüler was tasked with continuing his work. The building work was also led by Ferdinand von Arnim and Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse. After the cornerstone was laid on 14 April 1845 the dedication of the sacred building took place on 24 September 1848. The building work lasted until 1854. The structure resembles a High Italian monastery.

The church is a columned basilica with three naves and no transcept, with a free-standing belltower. The 13.5 m high central nave overlaps the side aisles, which are half as wide. An arcade of central arches mark the crossing point. An etching of the Basilica di San Clemente in Rome made by early Christians resembles a draft design of the Potsdam church.

The religious Frederick William IV desired a flat coffered ceiling on the inside, with gold stars on a blue base painted on the panels. The king saw the design of early Christian sacred buildings, converted from market and court halls, as particularly appropriate.

An original Venetian mosaic from the early 13th century decorates the church's apse. It was originally in a church in San Capriano on Murano, Venice until its abandonment. While he was crown prince Frederick William had it bought at auction for 385 thalers and brought to Potsdam by canal.

The display shows the enthroned Christ with the Book of Life, the right hand upheld in blessing. At each side stand Mary and John the Baptist. Next to them stand the apostle Peter and Saint Cyprian, martyred by beheading in 258 and patron saint of Saint Cipriana, wearing chasubles. As an allegory for the Holy Spirit, a pigeon decorates the vertex of the hemisphere. Over the heads of the archangels Raphael and Michael a lamb shines as a symbol of Christ. On the semicircle of the Apse a Latin inscript reads, according to Martin Luther's translation: "Lord, I have love for the site of your house and the place where your glory resides".

The altar canopy, which rests on four dark green columns, was created from Siberian jasper (semi-precious stones) and was a gift from Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, the king's brother in law. It was installed in the Church of Peace in 1842.

In the right-hand aisle lies the former baptistery. The six-sided baptismal stone was relocated in 1965.

The counterpart to the baptistery is the sacristy in the left-hand aisle. After the death of Frederick William IV it was used temporarily as a mausoleum for him and for other deceased members of the House of Hohenzollern. The son of Emperor Friedrich III and his wife Empress Victoria, as well as the Princes Sigismund and Waldemar, were entombed here until 1892. In 1920 the youngest son of Wilhelm II, the last Emperor of Germany, was laid to rest in the sacristy. After 1931 he was moved to the Ancient Temple.

Under two marble tablets, embedded in the ground in front of the steps of the altar room, the royal crypt can be found. Frederick William IV died following several strokes on 2 January 1861, and following the dedication of the crypt in October 1864 his coffin was placed there. The heart of the king, however, rests in the mausoleum of the Charlottenhof in Berlin. He was laid in the ground at the feet of his parents, King Frederick William III and Queen Louise.

In 1873 his wife Elisabeth Ludovika followed him to the grave. Both coffins, made out of English tin, carry the same inscript as the marble plates in the church floor: "Here he rests in God, his Redeemer, in the hope of resurrection in the soul and a merciful judgement, justified solely by the service of Jesus Christ our most holy Saviour and Only Life".

In the year of the crypt's dedication, the flooring of the church was completed as Frederick William IV had wished; the design is an intricately interleaved endless ribbon which represents eternity.

The free-standing, 42 m high campinale (belltower), on the southern side, is based on the design of the campinale of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. An aedicula (column-bearing dais) on the east side bears the fresco "Jesus in Gethsemane" by Eduard Steinbrück. The tower has seven open floors. The four bells, named Gratia, Clementia, Pax and Gloria, sound from the third floor above the clockwork. In 1917 and 1945 they were all taken from the tower to be melted down for the war effort, but escaped this unhappy fate.

An open porch (narthex) across the western side of the portal opens into an inner courtyard (atrium). The larger-than-life statue of Christ on the fountain is a copy of the marble original, created in 1821 by Bertel Thorvaldsen, in the Copenhagen Church of Our Lady. The ancient Greek inscript on the edge of the fountain reads: "Cleanse thyself of thy sins and not just thy face". An arcade surrounds the inner courtyard.

Humphreys, Pyeongtaek students experience 'fun' at summer school
online photo editor
By Hong Seung-hui
USAG Humphreys Public Affairs

CAMP HUMPHREYS — For the second consecutive summer, American children assigned here were offered the chance to experience Korean culture firsthand, while Korean children experienced American culture – many for the first time – during the 2011 Korean-American Children’s Joint Summer School, during the first two weeks of August.
This event, sponsored by Pyeongtaek City and Gyeonggi Province and supported by the Pyeongtaek Cultural Center, was successful in 2010, so it was opened to more children this year.
About 150 students, divided into two five-day sessions, participated. That is more than twice the amount of participants compared to last year.
The program included taekwondo classes, making Korean traditional rice cakes, English class, visiting the National Museum in Seoul, touring the Hyangyo (a local Korean school during Chosun dynasty) and making Sotdae, a pole signifying prayer for a good harvest. Also, so the Korean students could see what life was like for American kids, they spent an afternoon here. First, they ate lunch at the Red Dragon Dining Facility and then got the chance to run it off over at Zoeckler Gym.
The Korean and American students took classes together. Although apprehensive on the first day, the children became friends easily later on.
Sean Carrigan, a veteran of the program, having participated in 2010 as well, said “I have friends, all boys, in my class. The only difference between American children and Korean children is the language only. Other than that, we are the same.”
Some of the programs allowed for parents to join in, especially while visiting the National Museum.
Carrigan’s grandmother, Suzanne Mese, who was visiting said, “Now I know why he loved this program. The museum was so helpful and educational for the children. And, this is a really good opportunity for American children to know how Koreans make food and live. Indeed, the dishes in the restaurant we visited were very delicious. Everything was excellent.”
Taking advantage of programs such as this will help the ever increasing population of Americans living here have more chances to make Korean friends. It is the same thing for Korean people.
Shin Hae-in, a sixth-grader at the Jang Dang Elementary School, made a good friend through this program.
“(Before) I have not had any opportunity to make an American friend,” she said. “Now, Alexa (an American girl) and I are good friends. The program is too short. I want to do this again.”
All of the students participated in a graduation ceremony on the final day, where they sang songs they learned during the week and did a taekwondo demonstration.

Whilst I use the free version of Picnik for basic editing (I love its cross-processing effect, for example, and use vignettes more than you might think), Serif PhotoPlus 8.0 is my weapon of choice when it comes to serious editing. I know it's old (and it's certainly clunky) but it was cheap and I think I've pretty much sussed out how most of it works now. The important bits, anyway :-)

So, here it is; my Flickr Station for The Rogues. Flickr itself is one of the minimised windows at the bottom of the screen. And, yes, my desk really is that messy. Messier, usually.

As you can see, this is a multiple self-portrait. For the Fuggers, the image I'm editing features nonchalant tooth-brushing; a picture I took today.

Oh, and it features a bonus, live, picture of Catherine.
