So far my digital images have only been published on the net, mostly on flickr. But when a friend recently asked for a picture of mine as a birthdaypresent I started thinking about photo-combinations to get printed up, nice and large of course!

I have now put together a number of 'photo combi's' and I would really appreciate your opinion about these. Which one would you like to see printed up and why? Or maybe you don't like the combinations at all, in which case, please, tell me so as well! Naturally, in order to best be able to judge, you should really view the large size...

Leave your comment here or as a comment to the group I have posted these ten combinations in!

Acrylic Painting Canvas Art - "Benighted & Befogged"
photo to canvas
I'm enamoured with the notion of things flying that really shouldn't. I suspect this fixation derives from an early love affair with Enid Blyton's, "The Wishing Chair". I like to think the protagonist of this painting is flummoxed yet delighted.

The illustration possesses several features of note, which may not be obvious in the photos. The feature cloud is subtly textured so that it appears slightly raised off the background. The protagonist and his bike have been rendered in many delicate layers of acrylic, alternating between matte acrylic and glossy acrylic glaze. When viewed in direct light, these alternating layers of gloss and matte interact in an aesthetically interesting way.

Specifics:
- 50x20cm / 19.7x7.9"
- Depth of canvas: 3.5cm / 1.4"
- The wall art is rendered in acrylic on deep edge canvas

I got this Lego set as a Channukah gift from a roommate one year. Recently there was news that Lego, invented and manufactured in Denmark, would outsource its production to Mexico and the Czech Republic for cheaper labor. So this menorah contains both the joy of childhood toys, and the sadness of adult realizations. Many gifts that will be exchanged these holidays will be made under unfair labor conditions. Outsourcing may be "old news", but it's still happening in 2006 and shows no signs of stopping.

Deadly Sins

A new collectible, slated to set the mark as an icon for the 22nd Century - collect all Seven Deadly Sins. Due out by December in an exclusive limited edition set.

Pure Products USA | Ligorano/Reese Collaboration in Art

Towards a Surreal Politik…

In 1992, we began Pure Products of America as a series of multiple editions focusing on the impact of marketing on politics. Over the past 17 years, the series has expanded and now includes 14 pieces running the gamut from snow globes to underwear (our underwear was the first to pack a political message), to happy meals.

Each object is signed and numbered in various sized editions. When we introduce Pure Products, we send some of them as gifts to government officials. Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton, members of the Supreme Court and various Senators and Congressional representatives have all received a pure product at one time or another.

Pure Products also function as discreet elements in installations. The installations The Bible Belt, Pillars of the Clean Order, and Steel Nipples incorporated them in sculptural settings with video and other media. In 2001, we expanded on this idea with the inauguration of an online retail website as part of the project.

Each piece is grounded within a framework that satirizes political values and, often, lampoons morality. Some pure products, like Line Up and Contract with America underwear, became media sensations, reported in the press, on television and radio. The commentary surrounding the artwork is a mixture of absurdity and culture jamming, amplifying how much the media interprets and misinterprets contemporary art and blurs the connections between art, activism and commerce.

Bio

NORA LIGORANO and MARSHALL REESE have collaborated together as Ligorano/Reese since the early 80’s. They use collaboration to blend diverse talents into a singular voice and vision. In the process of creating their work, their individual contributions cross and criss-cross between each other from brainstorming to realizing and making the art on location or in the studio.

They use unusual materials and industrial processes to make their limited edition multiples, videos, sculptures and installations, moving easily from dish towels, underwear, and snow globes, to electronic art and computer controlled interactive installations.

They take and manipulate images, audio and text from old media: print, television, radio and combine that with the new: internet and mobile telecommunications. Their pursuit is an ongoing investigation into the impact of technology on culture and the associations and meanings that the media brings to images, language and speech in politics.

They have an interest with using open forms to involve community interaction, like their drawing contests, Crater Bay Area for the 01 Festival in San Jose and Crater New York at Location1. Installations that combine sculpture with public participation in drawing, within the context of a contest that is also streamed on the internet and in Second Life. Their ice sculptures, “Main Street Meltdown” and “The State of Things” share that same sense of open possibility, fusing natural processes of erosion and decay as flexible durations and markers to determine the experience of the work.

Many of their sculptures and installations reinterpret and reexamine older forms of technology - using objects that signify truth, authority and manifest cultural historicity. Ligorano/Reese use mirrors, clocks, metronomes and medieval codex bindings and combine them with video screens. They have invented micro-projection systems to display films on the head of a pin or the counterweight of a metronome.

Since 2004, they’ve investigated portraiture as a construct of social representation. Line Up (2004-5), their series of portraits of Bush administration officials in mug shot, acknowledges that the mug shot is the preeminent form of portraiture now that more people are incarcerated in the U.S. than any other country in the world. In December, 2007, the exhibition of these photos at the New York Public Library caused a firestorm of controversy with heavy rotation on FoxNews, DrudgeReport’s homepage and many, many other publications.

In 2001, they launched www.pureproductsusa.com, the online retail website for their infamous political art series the Pure Products of America. Since 1992, Ligorano/Reese have made 11 multiples in signed editions of 3 to 100. They are best selling editions at Printed Matter, artbook@ps1 and the New Museum store and have prompted, at least on one occasion, the RNC to threaten them with copyright infringement.

Between the Wheels by Rush
To live between a rock and a hard place
In between time
Cruising in prime time
Soaking up the cathode rays

To live between the wars in our time
Living in real time
Holding the good time
Holding on to yesterdays

[Chorus]

You know how that rabbit feels
Going under your speeding wheels
Bright images flashing by
Like windshields towards a fly
Frozen in the fatal climb
But the wheels of time
Just pass you by
Wheels can take you around
Wheels can cut you down
We can go from boom to bust
From dreams to a bowl of dust
We can fall from rockets' red glare
Down to "Brother can you spare..."
Another war
Another wasteland
And another lost generation

It slips between your hands like water
This living in real time
A dizzying lifetime
Reeling by on celluloid

Struck between the eyes
By the big-time world
Walking uneasy streets
Hiding beneath the sheets
Got to try and fill the void

Olympic Opening Ceremony celebrates ‘One World, One Dream’

(Cleared for public release)

EDITOR'S NOTE: The U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) provides soldier-athletes the opportunity to compete toward qualifying for the United States Olympic team. Qualified soldiers must be nationally ranked in their chosen sport and be certified by the United States Olympic Committee at a world class level. Athletes join the program at least three years before the Olympic Trials. To be eligible for the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, soldiers must currently be a member of the Active Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard. Soldiers must also be eligible to represent the USA in international competitions and demonstrate the potential to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team or U.S. Paralympic Team.

BEIJING – The elaborate Opening Ceremony of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad featured a display of China’s long and distinguished history and culture intertwined with the “One World, One Dream” theme of the 2008 Summer Olympics.

“Beijing, you are host to the present and the gateway to the future,” International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge proclaimed before a sellout crowd of 91,000 at National Stadium on Aug. 8. “Thank you.”

An audience of 400,000,000 was expected to watch the spectacle on television.

“Friends have come from afar, how happy we are,” is a well-known saying of Confucius (551 BC-479 BC), a famous Chinese educator and thinker whose thoughts deeply influenced later generations.

U.S. President Bush and wife Laura were among more than 80 world dignitaries in attendance, along with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bush became the first U.S. president to attend an Olympic Games outside of the United States while serving as Commander in Chief. His father, George H.W. Bush, the 41st U.S. president, also made history by occupying the chair of Chef de Mission of the U.S. Olympic Team, marking the first time the U.S. Olympic Committee has had an honorary chief of the mission.

The four-hour extravaganza featured 110 minutes of music, beginning with the fou, the most ancient Chinese percussion instrument made of clay or bronze. Manned by 2,008 performers, the fou-produced sound of rolling spring thunder greeted friends from all over the world.

The music was specially created by 18 composers for a production that displayed 15,153 sets of costumes in 47 styles. Some of the performers rehearsed for 13 months in preparation for one of China’s most magical nights.

Six hundred people were involved in the installation, direction, and safety supervision for a display of 11,456 fireworks set off from from 287 points atop the stadium and 8,428 more from 27 positions in the central area. Another 1,462 glowing and sparkling fireworks illuminated the upper rim of the stadium.

Gunpowder was invented in China during the Song Dynasty (960 AD-1276 AD). People used the ingredients for gunpowder as medicines for illnesses in ancient times; hence the name “gunpowder,” means “burning medicines.” The invention of gunpowder is one of China’s outstanding achievements in the history of human civilization that changed the course of world history.

A painting scroll revealed the origin and development of China’s history and culture. Paper is another of the four great inventions of ancient China. As one child sang “A Hymn to My Country,” 56 children clustered around the National Flag of the People’s Republic of China to represent the country’s 56 ethnic groups. Immediately following, the famous Chinese painting “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains” was visible on the stadium floor while the ancient stringed instrument, Guqin, provided the “Sounds of Utmost Antiquity.”

Cliff painting, earth pottery and bronze vessels were displayed to reflect artistic developments of the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC-1046 BC) and Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC-221 BC).

The Great Wall was illustrated by smooth lines, both concise and vivid, with peach blossoms, romantic and enjoyable, that illustrated the sweet wishes of peace-loving Chinese people.

The “Silk Road” was an important vehicle for economic and cultural exchange between China and Western countries. More than 2,000 years ago, trade caravans of China set out from Chang’an (now Xi’an in Shaanxi Province) with expensive silk, crossed the Hexi Corridor, and entered the European continent.

More than 600 years ago, Zheng He of Ming Dynasty led seven shipping fleets with 27,000 people aboard a long voyage from Quanzhou that arrived in Western Asia and Eastern Africa, thus creating the well-known “Maritime Silk Road.” On opening night, a performer held an ancient compass, another of the four great inventions of ancient China.

In a later segment, Chinese pianist Lang Lang and 5-year-old Li Muzi welcomed a brand-new age. Lang is the first Chinese pianist to have long-term cooperation with first-class orchestras in Berlin and Vienna. He has played recitals in many of the most famous music halls in the world. During that performance, the kite was introduced as another Chinese invention.

An exhibition of Taiji manifested the integration of traditions and the future by illustrating the unity of man and nature. Taijiquan is the most representative shadow boxing among Chinese martial arts, characterized by the “combination of the dynamic and static and the interdependence of hardness and softness.”

The Eight Diagrams of Taiji symbolize eight natural phenomena – heaven, earth, thunder, wind, water, fire, mountain and swamp – that represent the changes of all things on earth. A total of 2,008 Taiji performers formed a circle that illustrated grandness and consummation in the traditional Chinese concept.

As the program progressed, the smiling faces of children from around the world demonstrated the theme of “One World, One Dream.” A gigantic, 16-ton globe arose from the floor, adorned with 58 actors running on nine rings covered with an Olympic Torch pattern. The runners seemingly were free from gravity and full of magic, fantasy and bravery.

The march of nations featured Olympic athletes from 205 countries, led into the stadium by Greece (in accordance with tradition). The host team from China concluded the march of nations.
As Team USA entered they clearly received the loudest ovation of the evening – until Houston Rockets basketball star Yao Ming led the Chinese contingent into the stadium.

The throng representing 596 U.S. athletes occupied more than 100 meters of the running track. As U.S. Flag Bearer Lopez Lomong was rounding the turn, members of Team USA were still filing into the arena from the opposite end of the stadium.

After eight Chinese Olympians carried the Olympic Flag into the stadium, the banner was raised and The Olympic Anthem was played. Athletes' and officials' oaths were read, symbolic doves were released, and the Olympic Torch Relay concluded a 33-day journey abroad that covered 97,000 kilometers across five continents and 21 countries.

Chinese Olympic gymnast Li Ning ran 500 meters in about three minutes around the wall of the open-air stadium’s inner roof in what was possibly the most fascinating sight of the night. Supported by a cable, Ning at times appeared to be running on air before lighting the cauldron.

“Many would say that the Olympic Games are of great significance and have profound meanings,” said opening ceremony artistic director Zhang Yimou. “But I once heard someone say: ‘They are all our guests. We should make them happy.’”

"This answer, simple as it is, tells us that we are of one big family. The Opening Ceremony demonstrates the same spirit as we find in the theme song of the ceremony: You and me, from one world; we are family.

“I have never led such a huge team, with so many performers, staff and volunteers. You may not be able to see their faces clearly in this grand stadium and their names may not be printed on this beautiful brochure, but I know how hard they worked for tonight. At this very moment, what do they want to say to you, our distinguished guests, and to the audience all over the world? There is only one simple sentence: ‘From the bottom of my heart, I hope you will enjoy yourselves.’”

This is the 43rd image in a street photography / street portraiture series called "1000 Faces Of Canada". Feel free to add me as a contact, I will be uploading one image every day toward this project.

Darcy and I were mulling through some photo-books at a Chapters downtown today when Patricia over-heard the conversation and introduced herself to us. A photographer herself, we talked a while about the craft and managed to snap a few pictures before staff instructed us to put the cameras away. She was looking for a photography community and knowing the great atmosphere here in the Ottawa group, we encouraged her to join. Perhaps she will become the latest enthusiast to join the leagues! :)

“Some students let the stress get to them,” says FSU sophomore Allison Tepperberg. “They pull all-nighters, which is actually proven to make your test performance worse because you don’t retain half of the information that you’re studying.”

Students take priorities into account when preparing for exams

Write a five-page paper, then study for a final exam. Now multiply that by four additional classes, the minimum for a full-time student’s course load.

In the remaining weeks of this fall term, FSU students begin feeling the pressures and anxiety that arise during preparations for finals.

Though additional study hours are expected during finals, time management and prioritizing are key components to keep students well-rounded and healthy during their finals stress. In visualizing their schedules through weekly and monthly calendars, students can keep track of important dates, but also of their availability.

According to Medical News Today, a new study shows that stress affects students’ sleep more than caffeine, drugs/alcohol or technology use. Daily activities, such as a positive sleep, diet and exercise regimen tend to be dismissed during finals time.

However, to ensure healthy lifestyle choices, students should be leaving room for unexpected events in their schedules, as well as time for personal relaxation.

After hours of focus on Powerpoints and rereading highlighted text, students can grow weary and burnt out, thus useless for long-term retention.

“I tend to nap before doing any kind of long-term studying and that way I am well rested before starting any studying,” says FSU sophomore Erin McGregor. “I strongly believe in getting plenty of sleep instead of straining your body.”

Part of what causes students’ stress levels to rise during this time is the overwhelming feeling that comes with multiple deadlines per class in close proximity.

“Some students let the stress get to them,” says FSU sophomore Allison Tepperberg. “They pull all-nighters, which is actually proven to make your test performance worse because you don’t retain half of the information that you’re studying.”

To release the academic stress, Tepperberg takes one hour from her day and spends it away from books and at the gym. McGregor also handles stress by setting time aside specifically for the gym.

“I actually learned in one of my classes that this is one of the top ways to relieve stress and make you feel better,” says McGregor, a current nursing student.

As students scribble out to-do lists and mark calendar days, tunnel vision of studying for upcoming exams may also affect students.

“It’s extremely important to maintain a social life while studying for finals, because sometimes you end up reading a chapter and at the end, you have no idea what you read,” says Tepperberg.

An article produced by U.S. News & World Report about time management in college makes the point that over-committing and being over-involved can hinder a student’s time management. When looking for time to fit in those extra study hours, priorities matter.

While time management applies throughout the semester, and beyond schooling itself, prioritization of multiple things is crucial during finals time.

“Either way, there will be some kind of consequence with doing so many things, whether your grades become worse, you lose relationships with friends, or even lose your job,” says McGregor.

Students who feel overwhelmed by the final demands of the semester may seek out their advisor, counselor and tutoring centers or professors.

Many students opt for study groups for study sessions; it is harder to break the promise of studying at a specific time and length with a group.

“My number one piece of advice is to cancel your Netflix subscription,” says FSU senior Ardon Polukoff. “I know plenty of people, myself included, who could spend an entire day ploughing through movies. Honestly, we all have too much going on and the last thing you should be doing is spending your time watching every episode of Madmen or Entourage. Save that for when you retire and have nothing better to do.”

Published on Sep 2, 2012 by Jefferson Nunes

Electric Mud is a studio album by Muddy Waters. Released in 1968, it is a concept album which imagines Muddy Waters as a psychedelic musician. Producer Marshall Chess suggested that Muddy Waters record experimental, psychedelic blues tracks with members of Rotary Connection in an attempt to revive the blues singer's career.

The album peaked at #127 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. It was controversial for its fusion of electric blues with psychedelic elements, but was influential on psychedelic rock bands of the era.

Blue Jeans iPhone Background

If you like this image, please leave a comment. Thanks!

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

Why did you roll your dice, show your cards

Look at me actually doing an upload two days in a row! As busy as I am I want to try to keep uploading even if they arent super good photos.... well I have some exciting news. I waaas going to start saving for a new camera (Canon 60D) beginning with the 0 I just put in my savings but instead I am using that towards a flight to LAS VEGAS TO SEE BRANDON FLOWERS. Much thanks goes to Mackie though, one of my old Green Day friends who goes to school there and is letting me stay with her and coming with me to the show. If she wasnt there I probably wouldnt be going.

Yeah yeah judge me, but to me travel is such an important thing in my life. Nothing compares to the feeling of seeing a new city for the first time live in person, feeling the different vibes and comparing it to your own home. As much as I want a new camera, that will always be there and I figure that Las Vegas is a city I'd like to see eventually, so why not go when one of my favorite artists is going to be playing (a hometown) show! This was an impulse decision and I just bought the concert tickets (plane tickets are to come next week when I get paid) but I have the same excited feeling as I did when I bought my Green Day San Francisco tickets. I love to travel. Especially when its to see great friends and music.
57 days til Las Vegas! :D

Random fact of the day is obviously:
I LOVE TO TRAVEL. Always will, I will never stop. Whether it's monthly roadtrips to Dutchess county, spantaneous trips to Boston or other northeastern cities or annual trips to Florida to see my cousin or random spur of the moment decisions like this one, I love it. It keeps my life exciting and gives me new places to see and new experiences and nothing compares to that feeling of seeing new places.

Why did you roll your dice?
Show your cards?

This vintage Christmas greeting card illustration (circa 1910) was scanned from my personal collection and the color restored (digitally remastered). I also retouched it to remove scratches, cracks, smudges and age spots. This is typically about a 3 hour process.
