It seems as if a lot of people would like to know how I did this. I will post a tutorial about it, soon but not now because I am writing my exams. Check back if you are interested!>

If you award please comment also... Thanks!

I know Trey did it better, much better! Others did too, but this is why everybody is doing it. If you ever stood at the peak you will never foregt this moment. It's majestic, kind of sacred :D
Srry for getting poetic but Honk Kong in my mind has the most impressive Skyline ever seen. Too bad when I was there clouds have been all over the place even though I waited for 5 hours to get a clear view. Sometimes life is unfair!
The Post processing was done from a single Raw file. Photomatix -> Photoshop -> some magic and the Nik Color Efex for the dark tones and the saturated reds.

Plant Labels
photo printer
I have close to 300 dahlias planted this year. I normally hand write labels for identification. This year I am trying out a new system. I have a spreadsheet on Google that I list all of my dahlias. I exported the sheet to an OpenOffice format (.ods). Using OpenOffice I created an OpenOffice database. Then I used the Label function in OO to generate labels. I used Avery 1X2 5/8 labels with a laser printer. I had a ton of these address labels from a previous life. The plant sticks (markers from www.dpind.com) that I use are only 5/8 inches wide, so I had to fold the label over. Not shown in the photo, the reverse side has some additional plant info (in a smaller font). Time will tell if these labels will last through the season. I normally use Sharpie industrial pens. Normal ink tends to fade out quickly. This whole process was very easy to do. However, I did spend a lot of time checking out different fonts. Detailed instructions on how to print labels from OO can be found on the web. Printing labels like this will also help quite a bit when I store the tubers over winter.

Day Two Hundred: Wrath
photo printer
"Wrath (Latin, ira), also known as anger or "rage", may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger. These feelings can manifest as vehement denial of the truth, both to others and in the form of self-denial, impatience with the procedure of law, and the desire to seek revenge outside of the workings of the justice system (such as engaging in vigilantism) and generally wishing to do evil or harm to others. The transgressions born of vengeance are among the most serious, including murder, assault, and in extreme cases, genocide." - From Wikipedia article on the Seven Deadly Sins

I do not actually harbor feelings of wrath towards this printer. I just needed something that I wouldn't mind accidentally hitting with the mallet. Good thing too, as I got a little caught up in things and ended up slamming it with the mallet. Luckily, I wasn't going that hard and it's a rubber mallet so nothing happened to the printer.

A little more into my photo's evolution. Originally I was going to do this with a hammer. When I went into the garage to get the hammer, I saw the mallet and realized it would translate a lot better on the photograph as the head is much larger and easier to see in the photo.

I'm a pretty easy-going guy so it takes a lot to drive me to wrath. Of all the Seven Deadly Sins, I am least likely to commit this one. I'm a lot more likely to be plain angry and infinitely more likely to be annoyed rather than wrathful.

Like most things I've read about other people's self-portrait processes on flickr, the frame I selected actually happened really early in the shoot. The more I tried to top this shot, the more dissapointed with the results I got. At least it wasn't the FIRST frame I shot...

I risked reprimand for taking this picture out of the Federal Buildings in downtown Chicago, but I couldn't resist. It's an excellent photo looking South down Federal Street on the right and South Dearborn on the left toward Printer's Row one of my favorite areas of Chicago where I lived for three or so years. The tall building in the middle left is the Fisher Building, followed by the Old Colony Building, the Manhattan Building and then the rest of Printer's Row. I'm pretty sure the building directly in the middle is the top of my favorite Chicago building The Manadanock. Printer's Chicago's oldest skyscrapper district. Built by publishers, printers and typehouses and though they're pretty much all gone it's the home to the Yearly Printer's Row Book Fair.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), located in Batavia near Chicago, Illinois, is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory specializing in high-energy particle physics. As of January 1, 2007, Fermilab is operated by the Fermi Research Alliance, a joint venture of the University of Chicago and the Universities Research Association (URA). Fermilab is a part of the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor.

Fermilab's Tevatron is a landmark particle accelerator; at 3.9 miles (6.3 km) in circumference, it is the world's second largest energy particle accelerator (the CERN LHC is 27 kilometres in circumference). In 1995, both the CDF and D0 (detectors which utilize the Tevatron) experiments announced the discovery of the top quark. In addition to high energy collider physics, Fermilab is also host to a number of smaller fixed target experiments and neutrino experiments, such as MiniBooNE (Mini Booster Neutrino Experiment), SciBooNE (SciBar Booster Neutrino Experiment) and MINOS (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search). The MiniBooNE detector is a 40-foot (12 m) diameter sphere which contains 800 tons of mineral oil lined with 1520 individual phototube detectors. An estimated 1 million neutrino events are recorded each year. SciBooNE is the newest neutrino experiment at Fermilab; it sits in the same neutrino beam as MiniBooNE but has fine-grained tracking capabilities. The MINOS experiment uses Fermilab's NuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector) beam, which is an intense beam of neutrinos that travels 455 miles (732 km) through the Earth to the Soudan Mine in Minnesota.

In the public realm, Fermilab is host to many cultural events, not only public science lectures and symposia, but classical and contemporary music concerts, folk dancing and arts galleries, when the Homeland Security Advisory System permits. Currently the site is open to all visitors from dawn to dusk who present valid photo identification.

A small herd of American bison, started at the lab's founding, lives on the grounds symbolizing Fermilab's presence on the frontier of physics and its connection to the American prairie.

I used The GIMP free photo editing software to join three images of this fossil bony fish together. I used the Pandora plug-in to help. Two of the three layers needed to be re-sized but I found I did not need to blend. If you really blow the image up you can see where I missed the alignment slightly.

As a first attempt to use this panorama software I don't think it is half bad.

The fossil itself is quite beautiful in close up. Ain't science grand?

A hilarious spoof of political drama ‘House of Cards’ that debuted last night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner saw Washington big leaguers taking aim at Hollywood heavyweights with the goading hand of star Kevin Spacey.

The aptly titled ‘House of Nerds’ starred Spacey in the same role he plays on the Netflix original series, that of remorseless politico Frances Underwood.

Underwood is gunning for the best seats he can get at ‘Nerd Prom’ and goes to great lengths to get them in the video, reaching out to the likes of John McCain, Valerie Jarrett, and Michael Bloomberg.

McCain also refused to sit beside former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Another equally unlikely, but just as funny, cameo was made by one of President Obama’s closest confidantes, Valerie Jarrett.

And though he’s had his problems with the president, even New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg shows up.

The first Netflix series produced just for the streaming platform created a great deal of buzz after its February 1 release.

That, paired with its propensity to portray the seedier, sharkier side of politics, makes it no surprise that Beltway insiders would jump at the chance to help spoof ‘House of Cards,’ Hollywood, and themselves.

New York City is a notoriously expensive place to live.

According to a recent report by the Council for Community and Economic Research the cost of living in Manhattan in 2012 was more than double the national average.

Manhattan is the most expensive place to live in the U.S., closely followed by Brooklyn at number 2, and Queens gets into the top ten at number 6.

If you thought that all this extra cash would buy you a bit of luxury, think again. The lack of bang for your buck in New York rentals has been upsetting Kentucky native Ryan Nethery.

So he started a blog, entitled The Worst Room, about the grim apartments he's seen with massive price tags.

He's clearly not alone in his disbelief, as his site has had thousands of hits. The photographs speak for themselves: cramped, dark, dirty, low ceilings, high bunk beds or all of the above.

But they're all hugely expensive.

All the photographs and captions are taken from The Worst Room.

Three Monks in Afternoon Repose

Three Monks in Afternoon Repose

I was in a remote area of Angkor Wat by myself, or so I thought. For whatever reason, there was absolutely nobody around and I was searching parts of the old abandoned temple entirely by myself. I came through a passage to find these three monks resting on the stairs.

See it large on my blog at stuckincustoms.com/2008/04/19/three-monks-in-afternoon-re...

Hand drawn plan of a powered free flight model of my own design. Wingspan is 16 inches. Feel free to download and build. Just download both images in large and print on an 8.5X11 sheet each. Multiply everything by 1.75 and you have the Bouncing Betty P30 with 28 inch wingspan.

Just post pictures of your built models, I would greatly appreciate that.

I had to hold the flash myself and trigger the camera by remote because the stupid Canon plastic flash stand broke when i tried to mount it on the light stand.

Op/Tech USA Rain sleeve - Flash
flash photo
Just tried on the rain sleeve, not the most "arty" photo I have ever taken, but I could not find a lot of search results on Flickr of a photo of the cover before purchase.

I bought mine for just over £7 for two from Warehouse Express here in the UK. Looks like it will do the trick with the draw string, and round the back it has a small cut out for sitting behind the eye piece (so your not looking through a bag). Took a moment to get on the camera, you have to place the camera and lens in and then slide the flash up the back and onto the hot shoe.

A good product and a essential bit of kit? time will tell but I'm guessing YES!

Your looking at:

Canon 430EX Flash + diffuser
Canon 50D
Canon BG2EN
Canon 70-200mm L F4 lens
DB-1 Classic Tripod

& of course the Op/Tech USA Rain sleeve - Flash.

My MacBook in Trouble
my photos
My 3 months old Apple MacBook 1.83GHz (built in week 26/2006) after most of its restarts...
Its power fails after coming back from standby or off state within 0 seconds to 5 minutes.
It has nothing to do with overheating - at least in my case!

Usually it is enough after such a "power failure" to hold down the power switch until it makes a beep sound. The the power manager has been reset...

Sometimes, when I got the upper screen output after a restart, I also have to erase the PRAM by pressing and holding the Apple-, Alt-, P- and R-Key after a restart.

(BTW: Spare Part is ordered...)
Thank you Steve for such a reliable tool!!!

UPDATE Friday 13th, Oct 2006
The heatpipe has been replaced... it seems to work fine again for now...

UPDATE Tuesday 24th, Oct 2006
Today my topcase, or just call it keyboard, has been exchanged... Discoloration of the white color should now be history too :-)

UPDATE Wednesday 3rd, Jan 2007
MacBook still runs fine...

UPDATE Thursday 31st, Jan 2008
MacBook still runs fine, with 250GB HD and 2GB RAM now

My Sisters
my photos
Here are my sisters in order from oldest to youngest. Also in order from shortest to tallest. Funny how that worked out.

The one on the far left just got married and I've had some more time to edit the photos. This tryptic was just begging to be created

I guess it wasn't the most opportune time for me to be taking pictures of my middle or youngest sister (mowing down on snacks) but hey. I've been their brother all their lives so they should be used to it.

Broken SD Card
photo card
Rob gave me this SD card that suffered a bending accident to try to salvage. I tried everything I could, but couldn't get the card to be recognized by any of the recovery software I was using.

As you can see, the reason is that the dozens of tiny surface mount interconnects broke off when it was bent. You can't really see it well in the photo, but the connects for the controller chip are broken, too.

Sorry, Rob. Unless someone knows of a way to access the flash chip directly, that card is a goner...

Humphreys, Pyeongtaek students experience 'fun' at summer school

CAMP HUMPHREYS — For the second consecutive summer, American children assigned here were offered the chance to experience Korean culture firsthand, while Korean children experienced American culture – many for the first time – during the 2011 Korean-American Children’s Joint Summer School, during the first two weeks of August.
This event, sponsored by Pyeongtaek City and Gyeonggi Province and supported by the Pyeongtaek Cultural Center, was successful in 2010, so it was opened to more children this year.
About 150 students, divided into two five-day sessions, participated. That is more than twice the amount of participants compared to last year.
The program included taekwondo classes, making Korean traditional rice cakes, English class, visiting the National Museum in Seoul, touring the Hyangyo (a local Korean school during Chosun dynasty) and making Sotdae, a pole signifying prayer for a good harvest. Also, so the Korean students could see what life was like for American kids, they spent an afternoon here. First, they ate lunch at the Red Dragon Dining Facility and then got the chance to run it off over at Zoeckler Gym.
The Korean and American students took classes together. Although apprehensive on the first day, the children became friends easily later on.
Sean Carrigan, a veteran of the program, having participated in 2010 as well, said “I have friends, all boys, in my class. The only difference between American children and Korean children is the language only. Other than that, we are the same.”
Some of the programs allowed for parents to join in, especially while visiting the National Museum.
Carrigan’s grandmother, Suzanne Mese, who was visiting said, “Now I know why he loved this program. The museum was so helpful and educational for the children. And, this is a really good opportunity for American children to know how Koreans make food and live. Indeed, the dishes in the restaurant we visited were very delicious. Everything was excellent.”
Taking advantage of programs such as this will help the ever increasing population of Americans living here have more chances to make Korean friends. It is the same thing for Korean people.
Shin Hae-in, a sixth-grader at the Jang Dang Elementary School, made a good friend through this program.
“(Before) I have not had any opportunity to make an American friend,” she said. “Now, Alexa (an American girl) and I are good friends. The program is too short. I want to do this again.”
All of the students participated in a graduation ceremony on the final day, where they sang songs they learned during the week and did a taekwondo demonstration.
