A worker ties gunny sacks filled with rice loaded on a tractor-trolley at the Ladwa grain market. The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and its partners are developing heartier new varieties of rice that can withstand drought, flood, cold, and toxic minerals such as salt and iron. By 2017, they are expected to benefit 20 million farmers in Asia and Africa. (Haryana, India, 2009)

I often take for granted the ease the working relationship is between Alexandra Rodionova and I. These pictures are a direct result of that comradery. If you where an onlooker on a shoot with Alex and I you would wonder why we hardly talk when we're right in the middle of taking pictures. Well, we don't need to communication, "stand this way, look that way, etc". We know each others every move. Thus is the benefit of working with a muse.
Alas, these days must come to an end. After 5 years of working together Alex is going her own way. So all I have now are there archived photo shoots to share. I'm sure once in awhile we'll team up again...

Washington DC - Capitol Hill: United States Capitol

A few nice photo sites images I found:

Washington DC - Capitol Hill: United States Capitol

The United States Capitol, located on top of Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall, serves as the seat of government for the United States Congress, the legislative branch of the U.S. federal government. Designed by a succession of architects, the neoclassical building is marked by its dome above a rotunda and two wings, one for each chamber of Congress: the north wing is the Senate chamber and the south wing is the House of Representatives chamber. With but one brief interruption, the Capitol has housed the legislative chambers of the U.S. Congress since 1800, and housed the U.S. Supreme Court from 1800 until 1935. Presidential inaugurations are traditionally held here, the physical symbol of the United States of America.

When Pierre Charles L'Enfant planned the city, he chose Jenkins Hill, which rose 88 feet above the Potomac River, as the site for the new Capitol Building. The following year, a public design competition was held and amateur architect, William Thornton, inspired by the east front of the Louvre and the Roman Pantheon, was selected by Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Execution was entrusted to Étienne Sulpice (Stephen) Hallet, a runner up in the competition, under the supervision of James Hoban. The cornerstone was laid by Washington on September 18, 1793. In 1795, Jefferson, vocal in his preference for Thornton's classical design, dismissed Hallet and George Hadfield was hired as superintendent of construction, only to resign three years later. In 1803, Benjamin Latrobe replaced him as Architect of the Capitoland, against his protestations, saw Thornton's design to near fruition.

The Capitol held its first session of United States Congress on November 17, 1800 in a then unfinished building. The Senate wing was completed that year, and the House of Representative wing was completed in 1811. In August 1814, the Capitol was partially burned by the British during the War of 1812. Reconstruction began under Latrobe, who was given more latitude to make alterations, in 1815 completed by 1819. Under Charles Bulfinch, who took over as Architect of the Capitol in 1918, construction continued through to 1826, with the addition of the center Rotunda area and the first dome of the Capitol.

The building was expanded dramatically in the 1850's under Thomas U. Walter, who was responsible for the wing extensions and the new "wedding cake" cast-iron dome, three times the height of the original dome and 100 feet (30 m) in diameter, which had to be supported on the existing masonry piers. The double dome consists of a large oculus in the inner dome, through which is seen The Apotheosis of Washington painted on a shell suspended from the supporting ribs, which also support the visible exterior structure and the tholos that supports the Freedom, a colossal statue that was added to the top of the dome in 1863. The weight of the cast-iron for the dome has been published as 8,909,200 pounds.

When the dome was finally completed, it was significantly larger than the original plan, and its massive visual weight overpowered the proportions of the columns of the East Portico. The East Front was rebuilt in 1904, following a design of Carrère and Hastings. A marble duplicate of the sandstone East Front was built 33.5 feet from the old Front during 1958-1962, and a connecting extension incorporated what formerly was an outside wall as an inside wall. In the process, the Corinthian columns were removed, and landscape designer Russell Page created a suitable setting for them in a large meadow at the National Arboretum, where they are combined with a reflecting'>reflecting pool.

The current Capitol Grounds, cover approximately 274 acres, were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who planned the expansion and landscaping performed from 1874 to 1892. In 1875, as one of his first recommendations, Olmsted proposed the construction of the marble terraces on the north, west, and south sides of the building that exist today.

In 2007, the U.S. Capitol was ranked #6 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

The sun sets over the mountains

I checked the sweet internet earlier in the day to see exactly what time sunset was in Yellowstone. I have the sunrise/sunset website bookmarked, which is kinda strange, maybe... Anyway, It said 7:03 or something like that. I knew full well that it means the exact moment when the sun dips below the horizon, so the sun really "sets" about 30 minutes before that... but that didn't help me get into the right position to see the sun right before it dipped below the mountains.

Luckily, there was a fine band of yellow sky lit up above the mountains, reflecting across the Madison River.

This magnificent ship has played host to some of the most famous people in the world. But, above all, she was home to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family. Now in Edinburgh you are welcome on board to discover the heart and soul of this most special of royal residences.

The Royal Yacht Britannia is one of the world's most famous ships. Launched at John Brown's Shipyard in Clydebank in 1953, the Royal Yacht proudly served Queen and country for 44 years. During that time Britannia carried The Queen and the Royal Family on 968 official voyages, from the remotest regions of the South Seas to the deepest divides of Antarctica.

Britannia is now permanently moored in Edinburgh's historic port of Leith and visitors can discover what life was like on board the ship for the Royal Family and crew.

On 11 December 1997 Britannia was decommissioned and became a 5-star visitor attraction in Edinburgh after the city bid to become her new home and one of the UK's most prestigious hospitality venues.

23/12/2008 (Day 2.358) - Computers Are Fun!

Our stuff arrived three weeks ago, but it took until this weekend before we got to the point where we could unpack our PC and set it up on a desk. Mostly because the place we wanted to put the desk was occupied by boxes. And more boxes.

Anyway, the PC fired up OK but, owing to its lack of proximity to the router, needed a wireless adapter before we could use the internet/networking on it.

Yesterday we bought one. I set it up and it worked first time; hooray - three internet-capable machines in one house, albeit that one is a very ropey laptop.

Yesterday evening the PC decided to stop talking to the internet. Or the network. After working fine for four hours.

I went into full diagnostic mode. Checked all of the connections. Checked the configurations. Tried the wireless adapter on a laptop running the same operating system. Compared configurations and set-up across three machines. Everything seemed fine; the router could see the PC, the PC said that it had a wireless connection, but nothing was happening between them. I tried every trick I could think of, but still couldn't get connectivity. I began to think that here was a fault with the adapter, but couldn't see what it might be. Finally, this afternoon, after much hair-pulling and swearing, I found the answer.

The PC has been in a box for three months. The first thing it did after I plugged into into the internet was to go off and look for Windows updates. Then it installed them.

And one of them broke the driver for the new wireless adapter.

Yes, get an internet connection set up, so that you can immediately download software to break that connection.

The problem is now solved; I rolled back the update, then installed an updated version of the adapter'd driver. Then allowed the update to take place again; this time it left my internet connection intact.

Although something broke iTunes; I've just spent he last hour re-installing that.

Computers: more fun than anything else you might have wanted to do today.

This picture doesn't show the computer; it shows our dressing-table mirror lit by fairy-lights; we've always wanted a mirror fringed with fairy-lights. Well, I have anyway. Now we have one :-)

And I didn't flip this; I wrote on the pad backwards. Easier to do than you might think; easier than finding a quick answer to wireless networking problems, anyway.

A year ago today I went out in the fog.

Sun Earth Day 2013

Some cool earth image images:

Sun Earth Day 2013
earth image
Image by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
Every year, near the spring equinox, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., hosts an extravaganza on the science of the sun and its interactions with Earth, a field known as heliophysics. On March 22, 2013, experts from Goddard visited both NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia’s eastern shore and the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore. The theme for the event was Solar Max – Storm Warning!

The day is part of a year long program of presentations and events – many hosted by museums and educators around the world – to celebrate the science of our connected sun-Earth system. Collectively, the events are known as Sun-Earth Days.
On Mar. 22, the Sun Earth Days team joined forces with the producers of NASA EDGE. NASA EDGE is an unscripted, non-traditional video podcast (vodcast) that combines funny, offbeat and informative sketches, features and interviews. NASA EDGE led a live webcast from Wallops, which is NASA's principal facility for management and implementation of suborbital research programs. Wallops is responsible for launching many of NASA’s Heliophysics sounding rockets.
The Mar. 22 event focused on how active and dynamic the sun is as it nears the peak of solar activity, known as solar maximum, expected to occur in 2013. Participants included, among others: Goddard solar scientist Alex Young, who discussed NASA’s heliophysics space missions, which help scientists better understand what causes the giant explosions on the sun such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections; Dan Smith, a scientist at Johns Hopkins’ Advanced Physics Laboratory, who discussed the Van Allen Probes mission studying Earth’s radiation belts; and Goddard space scientist Doug Rowland, who discussed a sounding rocket mission called VISIONS that studied streams of oxygen produced during aurora called the auroral wind.

During the webcast, the team announced the first two -- of an eventual five total -- winners of the Sun-Earth Days’ Anime Contest, a contest to create super hero sidekicks for SolarMAX, the official super hero mascot for NASA’s Sun-Earth Days. The winners were Maria Malcia, an 8th grader at the National High School of Computer Science in Tudor Vianu, Bucharest for a superhero called Aurora and WooKyung Lee at Suyvesant High School in New York City for a superhero named Queen Solaris.

At the Maryland Science Center, over 2,000 children participated in hands-on activities with Goddard educators. The children learned about the solar cycle, solar maximum, space weather and how space weather can affect orbiting spacecraft and even technology here on Earth. Up on the roof top, visitors could observe the sun through a solar telescope as well as experiment with special beads that change color in response to the sun’s ultraviolet light.

Sun Earth Day 2013

1951 Buick Roadmaster

Check out these picture sizes images:

1951 Buick Roadmaster

The Roadmaster was an automobile built by the Buick division of General Motors. Roadmasters produced between 1936 and 1958 were built on Buick's longest non-limousine wheelbase and shared their basic structure with entry-level Cadillac and, after 1940, senior Oldsmobiles. Between 1946 and 1957 the Roadmaster was Buick's top of the line model. Buick again applied the Roadmaster name to its full-size rear-wheel drive models between 1991 and 1996.

This is a view of the old and rather overgrown Chalk quarry just south of Langtoft, in East Yorkshire.

Normally the Chalk in East Yorkshire is horizontally bedded or nearly so. But at this quarry the locally steep dips (> 50°) are due to the east-west trending Howardian Hills-Flamborough Fault belt. This is magnificently exposed on the coast at Selwicks Bay, near Flamborough Head:

In the Flamborough area, these E-W belts of disturbed Chalk have been recognised since 1829 during the early years of geological surveying in the UK.

Section of the old A625 road on the Mam Tor landslip, Derbyshire
upload photo
Originally uploaded for the Guesswhere UK group.
This is a section of the old A625 Sheffield to Chapel-en-le-Frith road at the foot of Mam Tor in the Peak District. The road was built across an extensive active landslip area and was in constant need of repair. The photo shows the repetitive layers of successive repairs made to this section. The road was finally closed in 1979.

The landslip first formed about 3000 years BP, on an oversteepened slope left after Devensian periglacial period. There is an 80 m high back scar in formed in the Mam Tor Beds.

The toe of the landslip is still active today, moving at up to 2 metres per year in places.
