Child Saluting American Flag

Happy Memorial Day!

This is my 7-year old son, who followed me up the hill to take photos of our neighbor's American Flag. The flag is positioned at the top of a hill that overlooks the Santa Clarita Valley. No, it was not spontaneous. He was staring up at the flag and I thought a salute would make a patriotic image. I was right. :)

Another upload of some of the photos I've been taking over the past couple of months.

Things have settled down a little now. My father's house is on the market and we're looking at moving him to a more appropriate home for his needs. Meanwhile I'm starting to get organised for university in October. The trouble now is that I have a mountain of photos to edit and upload. Luckily I don't have much time to take any at the moment!

Thanks everyone for your continued support and lovely comments. I'm definitely on my way back!

Somehow when I can't use a tripod, I only take very few photos. It's happening mostly in churches. If I know I will not like the result, I just don't bother anymore and just enjoy how it looks. But I did take few photos in the Segovia Cathedral so here is one of those. Only handheld and only from a single RAW

So far my digital images have only been published on the net, mostly on flickr. But when a friend recently asked for a picture of mine as a birthdaypresent I started thinking about photo-combinations to get printed up, nice and large of course!

I have now put together a number of 'photo combi's' and I would really appreciate your opinion about these. Which one would you like to see printed up and why? Or maybe you don't like the combinations at all, in which case, please, tell me so as well! Naturally, in order to best be able to judge, you should really view the large size...

Leave your comment here or as a comment to the group I have posted these ten combinations in!

Show Off Setup

A few nice photo show images I found:

Show Off Setup

Strobist Information:

For this picture I wanted to create the illusion of a candle burning extra bright. My first thought was to add some extra wicks into a normal candle and maybe a bit of lamp oil or paraffin. After a couple of tests I decided that was not going to give me the effect I was after, all it did was make a bigger flame and an even bigger mess. I then thought about using a blow torch but this would involve buying some huge candles to make the trick work. The answer lay in a small butane gas soldering iron from Tandy’s. This was about the size of a pencil with a long tip and an adjustable flame. Best of all it was only .

So to put this picture together, I placed three regular candles on top of a black sheet of paper which in turn was on top of a cardboard box. I drilled the centre out of a forth candle and made a hole in the box where the candle would sit. I then pushed the butane torch through the hole into the hollowed out candle. I used a couple of cans to hold the torch high enough and made the final height adjustment with bluetac.

For the lights, I had one SB-28 fired through a translucent umbrella by a PW to the left of the camera. It was set on 1/8th power and 24mm zoom. I placed a second snooted SB-28 with a blue filter over the hollowed out candle. It was set to 1/64th power and 85mm zoom.

For the flames to show up as brightly as possible, I set the shutter speed to 1/8 of a second and had the camera on a tripod fired by a remote shutter release.

I had to take the shot reasonably quickly as the soldering iron produces a temperature of 1300 degrees at the tip of the blue flame and I had a home make cardboard snoot sitting directly above it. Even after a few seconds it was hot to the touch. I had a wet tea towel on standby just in case! :)

The Chevrolet Bel Air is a full-size automobile that was produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors for the 1950–1975 model years. Hardtops in the Chevrolet Deluxe Styleline model range were designated with the Bel Air name from 1950–1952, but it was not a distinct series of its own until the 1953 model year. Bel Air production continued in Canada for its home market only through the 1981 model year.

The White House - Washington, DC

A Must View On Black

Today iam finishing my Week of July 4 series. I was a bit bored today to post straight forward shots so i wanted to try some processing. I think it has come good but i need all your comments to confirm that :)

The White House has been the official residence of every President of the United States with the exception of George Washington.

The White House is located on a site near the Mall chosen in 1790 by president George Washington and Pierre l'Enfant, the architect who created the master plan for the new capital. Meanwhile the president resided in the President's House at the temporary capital Philadelphia.

Most people seem to think the building was first painted white after it was rebuilt in 1817, but already in 1798 it was made white by a protective lime-based whitewash. It wasn't named White House from the beginning though: it was originally named the 'President's Palace', 'President's House' or 'Executive Mansion'. It was soon nicknamed 'White House' and in 1901 president Theodore Roosevelt made it the official name.

20 Nov 2009 Photo of Morro Bay Harbor more-or-less from the perspective of a 1942 photo (ref. set www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/sets/72157622715084937/ ) showing original dredging operations before the Embarcadero was built up. Charlene Odekirk, Rosemary Olszewski asked me to take a photo of present-day 2009 Morro Bay dredging operations from the same perspective as the 1942 dredging photo she showed to me. It was suggested (by Rouvaishyana?) that the two images might be hung together in the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History for visitor interest. I have included a couple of candidate photos, as the current dredging setup barely shows in the image taken from the same point as the machinery is located further out at the Rock and is tiny in the image. www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/2303222094 is one location I recommend for the "2009" version. This one taken 3/1/09 does not have the dredging equipment visible of course but really shows the new harbor. I here posted other present-day image candidates at the set at www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/sets/72157622715084937/ (I have also included some iPhone shots of the 1942 image just for perspective - they are NOT of reproduction quality). You can download the full-resolution versions of the photos in this set (you may need to login, and select "all sizes") and print it, or click "order prints" and it can be fulfilled online. I turned my printer off over two year ago and now outsource all my limited printing needs to mpix.com or the like. I wanted to suggest that to really demonstrate the changes over time, that the new image(s) not be a print, but simply a photo, or better, a video, displayed in one of those inexpensive LCD digital picture frames that PJ used to promote my Click-Click product in 2008. Anyway, I can't resist pushing people's technical buttons. I have repeatedly suggested that museum displays that are visual only and not consist of palpable or 3-dimensional objects, be rendered via HD programmable LCD displays (a suggestion for the museum improvements committee?). Imagine, exhibits that never fade and can be incrementally improved at no cost! You might also ask "Morro Rock, Morro Bay, CA. What did it Look Like between the Mainland and the Rock from the Late 1800's until Today?" My morro-bay.com/historical/ link to morro-bay.com/morro-rock/ - this page is full of maps and photos showing answers to questions of before and after. Check it out. Best! 77/365: Monday`s Child...
photo albums
Based after,in my own tongue in cheek fashion, that old rhyme:
Monday`s child is fair of face,
Tuesday`s child is full of grace,
Wednesday`s child is full of woe,
Thursday`s child has far to go,
Friday`s child is giving and loving,
Saturdays child works hard for a living,
and the child that is born on the sabbath day
is blithe and bonny, and good and gay.

Would you believe I was a Wednesday baby, typical! Though i was born at midnight so could have been Thursday...
