Fermilab Buffalo 113

A few nice host image images I found:

Fermilab Buffalo 113
host image
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), located in Batavia near Chicago, Illinois, is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory specializing in high-energy particle physics. As of January 1, 2007, Fermilab is operated by the Fermi Research Alliance, a joint venture of the University of Chicago and the Universities Research Association (URA). Fermilab is a part of the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor.

Fermilab's Tevatron is a landmark particle accelerator; at 3.9 miles (6.3 km) in circumference, it is the world's second largest energy particle accelerator (the CERN LHC is 27 kilometres in circumference). In 1995, both the CDF and D0 (detectors which utilize the Tevatron) experiments announced the discovery of the top quark. In addition to high energy collider physics, Fermilab is also host to a number of smaller fixed target experiments and neutrino experiments, such as MiniBooNE (Mini Booster Neutrino Experiment), SciBooNE (SciBar Booster Neutrino Experiment) and MINOS (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search). The MiniBooNE detector is a 40-foot (12 m) diameter sphere which contains 800 tons of mineral oil lined with 1520 individual phototube detectors. An estimated 1 million neutrino events are recorded each year. SciBooNE is the newest neutrino experiment at Fermilab; it sits in the same neutrino beam as MiniBooNE but has fine-grained tracking capabilities. The MINOS experiment uses Fermilab's NuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector) beam, which is an intense beam of neutrinos that travels 455 miles (732 km) through the Earth to the Soudan Mine in Minnesota.

In the public realm, Fermilab is host to many cultural events, not only public science lectures and symposia, but classical and contemporary music concerts, folk dancing and arts galleries, when the Homeland Security Advisory System permits. Currently the site is open to all visitors from dawn to dusk who present valid photo identification.

A small herd of American bison, started at the lab's founding, lives on the grounds symbolizing Fermilab's presence on the frontier of physics and its connection to the American prairie.

I'm going on vacation (photo trip) to Northern California for the week, and posting images of the amazing northern pacific coast. I'll also be stopping off in Petaluma one day for a visit to the Twit Cottage with Leo Laporte (The Tech Guy), and hoping to get some images of that meeting on here as well. I absolutely love road trips and the abilty to stop and take pictures if something inspires me along the way. I've been feeling a little blah about my photos lately; same old places, so getting away to fresh, new environments may be the kick I need. ;-)

Nashville skyline
photo blog
Image by Jim Nix / Nomadic Pursuits
Nashville is a nice town, and it has a lot of similarities to Austin in my opinion. Both are music cities, have great skylines, sit next to a river and have a "comfy feel" to them. I was in Nashville last week for 1 night and was able to get out with my trusty Nikon for a little while after hours. I knew I wanted to get this shot, as I took a similar one about 2 years ago but never posted it. I walked around their downtown for a bit, taking lots of "street shots" and capturing some of those amazing signs they have outside all their country music places. Then as sunset got near I made my way up onto the Shelby Pedestrian Bridge which gives you this wonderful view of the town. I took a lot of shots from up here, at various angles and light conditions. In other words, I have several more shots of the Nashville skyline to show you one day! Thanks for stopping by!

Two days ago I uploaded a photo taken from the tower of the St. Egidius Church in Bardejov. This time I'm uploading a photo of the church :). I took this shot last weekend while visiting relatives there.

This was taken around 1 hour after the sunset, so still in the blue hour. The church was already lit up, but all the clouds have vanished. So I tried to use the best sky color from the original shots, to make it at least a little bit interesting :)

Hosking Industries had the pleasure of covering the 2011 NSW All Ford Day at Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway recently and were able to snavel a stack of great Ford-related textures and emblem images for use with our weekly Wicked Wednesdays texture-fests. Good news for you players at home!

This week we've brought you a series of six high-resolution stock images of Ford fuel filler caps of different kinds and different years/models. While we're offering you our images free of copyright (except for the disclaimer below), we can't let you leave without warning you that your usage of the images may not always make Ford happy. So if you're thinking of making Ford-branded Tshirts or something, check your local trademark laws first. You've been warned.

As always, Hosking Industries high-resolution texture images are FREE for personal and commercial use. However, you may not resell, repackage or redistribute these textures or generally pass them off as your own for monetary gain etc. Use them in your design projects, but don’t use them for commercial gain.

NY - Hyde Park: Vanderbilt Mansion NHS - Vanderbilt Formal Gardens - Boy and Dolphin Fountain

A few nice photo sites images I found:

NY - Hyde Park: Vanderbilt Mansion NHS - Vanderbilt Formal Gardens - Boy and Dolphin Fountain
photo sites
During 2002, the small Boy/Dolphin fountain in the Vanderbilt Formal Gardens was restored to working order, carrying water for the first time in over 60 years.

The Formal Gardens is just down the gravel path from the Vanderbilt Mansion, the centerpiece of the Vanderbilt National Historic Site in Hyde Park. The gardens were designed in the tradition of the Italian garden, which is characterized by terraces, fountains, pools and statues.

The first gardens on the estate were laid out in the early 1800's by Belgian landscape architect Andre Parmentier, when the land was owned by Dr. David Hosack. Walter Langdon, who owned the land after Hosack, continued to maintain them. Frederic W. Vanderbilt bought the propetty in 1895 and the estate was home for the Vanderbilts during the spring and fall seasons. Mr. Vanderbilt enlisted a series of landscape architects, most notably James L. Greenleaf, to radically revised and enlarged the gardens in 1902-3. Mr. Vanderbilt held a horticultural degree from Yale University and took a deep interest in the gardens. He and his garden staff were renowned at the Dutchess County Fair for their exhibits of flowers and vegetables.

The gardens thus represent several periods of development. They consist of three levels or tiers dedicated to specific types of plants. The top level, the greenhouse gardens, is the "annual" level. Most of the over 600 plants here do not survive winter and are replanted each spring. It consists of three separate parterre gardens within a rectangle framed on the west by the rose and palm houses and on the north by the toolhouse, carnation house, and gardener's cottage. The next level, the cherry walk and pool gardens, are located east and contain "perennials", which survive winter but bloom for just a few weeks a year, resulting in constantly changing colors. The lower level, the rose garden, still further east, has two terraces with rose panel beds. The rose garden was added by Frederick Vanderbilt, himself. It regularly contains over 1800 rose bushes. Many of them are considered "vintage" roses, which are old varieties which might have appeared in the original garden at the turn of the 20th century. There is a combination of tea roses, climbers and bush variety roses. Their best flowering is normally between mid-June and mid-July depending on the weather. All the beds are laid out in a formal, "Italian" style, referring to the symmetrical layout of the beds.

When Frederick W. Vanderbilt died in 1938, the Hyde Park estate, including the Vanderbilt Mansion was bequeathed to Mrs. James Van Alen, a niece of Mrs. Vanderbilt. Two years later, Mrs. Van Alen gave the estate to the Federal Government, and on December 18, 1940, it was designated a National Historic Site. The country soon went to war and there were no funds to maintain the gardens. Weeds and brush took over the garden beds and vines choked the arbors and crumbling walls. In 1974 the National Park Service began to restore the brick walls. A government grant in 1981 allowed the park service to complete the restoration of the walls and structures.

In 1984 the Frederick W. Vanderbilt Garden Association volunteer, not-for-profit organization, was founded for the purposing of restoring and maintaining the gardens.
