This is the kit that I use when I'm taking most of my photos. One Canon Rebel Xsi, an 18-55mm lens, a 55-250mm lens, a couple of lens hoods, a 430EXII external flash, an RS-60E3 remote switch, an assortment of filters including a UV filter, a circular polarizer, a FLD filter for florescent light, and a series of magnification lenses for close up shots. There's also a lens pen for keeping stuff clean. All of this fits pretty snugly into the Tamrac Velocity 7 bag that I use to carry gear.

The purpose here is not to duplicate the original image, from the New York Public Library but to generate a downloadable animated gif to assist viewing and presentation.

The New York public library offers a multitude of 19th/ 20th century images in the Flickr commons. The original image of [Interior of a Frame Shop, Fort Edward, N.Y.] is from the Robert N. Dennis collection of stereoscopic views. The undated image, probably dating to the late 19th or early 20th century (1860-1910), has no known restrictions on publication.

Kyōto - Ginkaku-ji
photo sites
Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺), or the "Temple of the Silver Pavilion”, located at the food of Kyoto’s eastern mountains, Higashiyama, was originally built by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa (足利 義政) in 1482 as a retirement villa. Yoshimasa, the 8th Ashikaga shogunate during the Muromachi period, modeled the Ginkaku-ji after Kinkaku-ji, the retirement villa commissioned by his grandfather, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third Ashikaga shogunate. After Yoshimasa’s death in 1490, Ginkaku-ji was converted to a zen temple, Jishō-ji (慈照寺), or the "Temple of Shining Mercy," which, today, is associated with the Shokoku-ji branch of Rinzai Zen.

As the retirement villa of an art obsessed shogun, Ginkakuji became the center of Higashiyama Bunka (東山文化), or Higashiyama Culture or the Culture of the Eastern Mountain, which unlike the Kitayama Bunka (北山文化) of his grandfather’s times, had a broad impact on the entire country. Based largely on the ideals and aesthetics of Zen Buddhism and the concept of wabi-sabi (beauty in simplicity), it was during Higashiyama Bunka that much of what is commonly seen today as traditional Japanese culture originated and developed, including chadō (Japanese tea ceremony), ikebana (flower arranging), Noh drama, and sumi-e ink painting.

The two-storied Kannon-den (観音殿), or Kannon hall, is the temple’s main structure and lends its popular name, Ginkaku (銀角), or the Silver Pavilion, to the temple. This name dates back, only, to the early Edo period, and its origin is is disputed. Some believe it is owed to Yoshimasa's initial plans--halted during the Onion War--to cover the pavilion's exterior in silver foil; others claim its due to the silvery appearance created by moonlight reflecting on the formerly black lacquered exterior. It is one of only two buildings, along with the Tōgudō, on the grounds to have survived intact over the years. The two stories are constructed in two different architectural style and contain a satue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. The interior, though, is not open to the public.

The property also features wooded grounds, The a Japanese garden designed by the great landscape artist Sōami, and a meticulously manicured sand garden known as Ginshadan (銀沙灘), or the "Sea of Silver Sand."

Ginkaku-ji, along with 16 other locations across Kyōto, Uji and Ōtsu, comprise the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities), designated in 1994.

Woodmen of the World Beneficiary Certificate (1917)
photo website
Paper Ephemera • This Beneficiary Certificate (used with permission of the Masonic Museum) website of Phoenixmasonry, Inc., was provided an interesting insurance company Woodmen of the World.

WOW was founded as a Benevolent Secret Beneficiary Fraternity, by Joseph Cullen Root, on June 6, 1890, in Omaha, Nebraska. The organization offers insurance to its members and helps those in need, to this day.

• At one time in its history, WOW did offer grave monuments to families of deceased members. Sometimes these monuments have the motto “Dum Tacet Clamat,” which means “Though Silent, He Speaks” etched on the stone.

In cemeteries (mostly in the Southwest & West) you will sometimes see gravestones with “Here Lies a Woodman of the World” engraved on them. Usually these will be accompanied by a symbol like this example. Logs, along with axes and other woodworking tools, are common motifs. Sometimes the grave markers themselves will be in the shape of logs or tree stumps, called treestones. • See an example I found in the Evergreen Cemetery in Cornwall, Vermont. • Regardless of its shape or size, Woodmen gravestones serve as a lasting tribute to its members and the ideals of Woodcraft. They also serve the Society's long standing motto that "no Woodmen shall rest in an unmarked grave."

• Here's another link from the official website of Falls City, Oregon, with a nice summary & more pix. • Of course, I should have started with Wikipedia.

1971 Mercedes R107 (20)

Check out these make a picture images:

1971 Mercedes R107 (20)
make a picture
The Mercedes-Benz R107 automobiles were produced from 1971 through 1989, being the longest single series ever produced by the firm, besides the G-Class. They were sold under the SL-Class and SLC-Class model names. The R107 replaced the W113 SL-Class in 1972 and was replaced by the R129 SL-Class in 1989.

The R107 took the chassis components of the mid size Mercedes-Benz W114 model and mated them to the larger engines from the S-Class. The W 107 chassis is also referred to as "R 107" for "Reihe" (series). The series comprised SL and SLC models.

The SL variant was a 2-seat convertible/roadster with standard soft top and hardtop. The SLC (technically C107) derivative was a 2 door hardtop coupe, with usable rear seats and in effect an SL stretched 10 inches (254 mm) with a fixed roof. Although some may air this car as an 'SL coupe'- though technically it might be, but in the real world it was an S-class coupe (modern day CL), replacing the former saloon-based 280/300SE coupé in Mercedes` lineup. The SLC was replaced earlier than the SL, in 1981, with a much larger model, the 380SEC. It was aimed at the same market as more exotic machines like the Jaguar E-Type and Citroën SM.

The 107 chassis had the longest run of any Mercedes chassis, 18 years from 1971 to 1989. Some 237,000 107 chassis SL's were built. About two thirds were sold in the US. These 107 cars are larger, heavier and more costly than the previous generation W113 SL cars.

Volume production of the first R107 car, the 350 SL, started in April, 1971 alongside the last of the W 113 cars; the 350 SLC followed in October. Early North American cars wore the name 350 SL, but had a larger 4.5L V8 (and were renamed 450 SL/SLC for model year 1973); the big V8 became available on other markets with the official introduction of the 450 SL/SLC on non-North American markets in March, 1973.

From July, 1974 both SL and SLC could also be ordered with a fuel-injected 2.8L straight-6 as 280 SL and SLC.

In September, 1977 the 450 SLC 5.0 joined the line. This was a special version of the big coupé featuring a bored five-liter version of the 4.5L V8, some light alloy body panels and a black plastic rear spoiler.

The 350, 450 and 450 SLC 5.0 models (like the 350 and 450 SL) were discontinued in 1980 with the introduction of the 380 and 500 SLC in March, 1980. At the same time, the cars received a very mild make-over; the 3-speed automatic was replaced by a four-speed unit, the 280 models came with a standard 5-speed (formerly a 4-speed) manual and all five-liter cars gained a black rear spoiler lip.

The 280, 380 and 500SLC were discontinued in 1981 with the introduction of the 126 series 380 and 500SEC coupes. A total of 62,888 SLCs had been manufactured over a ten year period of which just 1,636 were the 450SLC-5.0 and 1,133 were the 500SLC. Both these models are sought by collectors today. The SLC remains the only fixed roof Mercedes-Benz coupe based on a roadster rather than a sedan. Even today, an SLC in good mechanical condition still gives a mix of good performance, superb handling, comfort and safety, making it is easy to realise why they were a successful rally car.

Following the discontinuation of the SLC in September, 1981, the 107 series continued initially as the 280, 380 and 500SL. At this time, the V8 engines were re-tuned for greater efficiency, lost a few hp and consumed less fuel, helped by substantially numerically shorter axle ratios (that went from 3.27:1 to 2.47:1 for the 380 SL and from 2.72:1 to 2.27:1 for the 500 SL). From September, 1985 the 280SL was replaced by a new 300 SL, and the 380 SL by a 420 SL; the 500 SL continued and a 560SL was introduced for certain extra-European markets, most notably the USA. The final R107 SL was built on August 4, 1989. This eighteen-year run makes the 107 series the longest running series produced by Daimler-Benz.

The last 107 made, a 1989 500SL painted Astral Silver, resides in the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart, Germany. The W107 series today is prized by classic car collectors; almost all usable examples are worth £5000+ apiece, with the highest-range models sometimes worth £10,000 or more.

Mit den Typen 450 SLC und 450 SLC 5.0 bzw. 500 SLC nahm Daimler-Benz Ende der siebziger Jahre an großen Rallyes wie der 30.000 km langen Vuelta à la America del Sud (1977), der Safari-Rallye (1979) und der Bandama-Rallye (1979/1980) teil.

Mittlerweile befindet sich der älteste noch erhaltene R107, ein 350 SL mit der Chassis-Nummer 107043-12-000008 und der Motor-Nummer 116982-12-000001, in der Hand eines Arztes aus Erlangen. Der Wagen ist sandbeigemetallic und wurde am 21. April 1971 in Italien zum ersten Mal zugelassen.

The Chevrolet Bel Air is a full-size automobile that was produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors for the 1950–1975 model years. Hardtops in the Chevrolet Deluxe Styleline model range were designated with the Bel Air name from 1950–1952, but it was not a distinct series of its own until the 1953 model year. Bel Air production continued in Canada for its home market only through the 1981 model year.

Giant Beetle Hitchhiking On My Kayak (Pine Sawyer Beetle) - Crystalwood Lodge, Klamath County, Oregon

Actually I found this thumb-sized beetle floating in Crystal Creek so I lifted him out of the water and placed him on my kayak mostly to terrify my wife Margo. Mission accomplished! I paddled up next to her and bumped into her boat with this giant crawling around on my prow and she FREAKED!

He had some chompers on him - I believe they eat wood. When irritated he would start biting everything in sight. I let him ride all the way back and didn't know where he had gone until I lifted the kayak to put it on my truck top and he fell off to the ground with a thud.

Studio photographs offered to US prison inmates, shown contemporaneously at the 3rd Athens Biennale in a collection gathered by documentarian David Adler, demonstrate the standardization of formal portraits, here a particularly pathological display of normalcy despite obvious circumstances to the contrary. In one, a woman in prison uniform smiles coquettishly with her hand on her hip in front of an amateurish brightly coloured abstract backdrop, the effect both clearly contrived and yet entirely genuine.

Bidoun Magazine | The Greek Example | by Tom Morton.
Geography, or at least the mapping of dead end dreams, was suggested by David Adler’s archival presentation of photographs of American prisoners posing against the images of glittering skylines, verdant valleys, and Hockney-esque swimming pools they had painted on their cell walls.

Life has risk – whether we are driving in a car (probably the most dangerous activity of all), walking across the street, or even, unfortunately, running the Boston Marathon.

This risk, joining the Israel Defense Forces, is a meaningful risk, a risk on behalf of the Jewish people and you should support him with pride.

Dear Emuna,

We are Americans but we have imbued our children with a strong love of Israel. Now our 17-year-old son says that he wants to join the Israeli army after his high school graduation. We are simultaneously proud of him – and terrified. We could probably prevent it – through financial and other pressures – but then he will be very unhappy and resentful. We are so torn. Any advice?

Proud and Frightened

Dear Proud and Frightened,
My older son served in the IDF so I may not be completely objective in my response. I certainly am able to understand your fears and concerns. I think the general principle is that we want to give our children the freedom and means wherever possible to follow their goals and dreams.

In this case, in fact, your son’s goal is actually consistent with yours since you raised your children to love the land of Israel.

The only thing holding you back is fear. Fear is never a good guideline when it comes to making important decisions. If you are afraid of sky diving, you don’t need to conquer that fear. You can live a meaningful life and never jump from a plane. But it you are afraid of commitment and vulnerability, you will live a lonely, empty life. That is a fear you need to move past.

If you don’t let your son follow his dreams, the real risk is not only that he will resent you the rest of his life but that he will live an unfulfilled life as a result. If you force him into other less desirable choices, you risk that he will always be unhappy, always pursuing what you chose and not what he wanted, always wondering what if or pondering if only…this is true for all parents who compel their children to sacrifice their dreams to their parents’ vision.

And, again, in terms of the fear. Not only should it not be the deciding factor but we have to remember that the Almighty runs the world.

--- CONVERTING TO JUDAISM

Dear Emuna,
I'm a 17 year old trying to convert to Orthodox Judaism. I'm studying and slowly adjusting, but I feel like I'm out of my league. Do you have any suggestions (book recommendations, thoughts, feelings) that might help me?

Seeking Advice

Dear Advice Seeker,
That is a big move, requiring a large amount of courage and determination. Good for you! If you haven’t already, you should contact the orthodox rabbinical council in your city so that they can direct your conversion process. While there are so many fantastic books in English these days that it’s impossible to know where to begin (although I feel compelled to make a plug for my husband’s book, The Bible for the Clueless but Curious and of course you’ve already discovered Aish.com!), the most important suggestion I have is to get yourself a teacher (I assume the rabbinic council will recommend someone).

It shouldn’t just be a person who can explain the text to you, but rather someone you can observe, someone whose actions will teach you (louder than words as they say) what it’s like to be a Torah-observant Jew.

How does she dress? How does she speak – tone, language, sensitivity? What is it like to have conversations that don’t involve gossip? How does keeping kosher work in a real kitchen? (What are her best recipes?) What is an authentic Shabbos experience like? How does the food stay warm? How do you keep the kids involved? What is discussed at the table? What’s her daily prayer commitment? And on and on and on…

We have a mitzvah to serve a wise man, a Torah scholar. It’s not just out of respect but because that’s the best way to learn who and what we want to be. No book or website can even come close to replicating this experience.

This is a very exciting path you have chosen. I’m sure there will be challenges along the way and also great reward. There will be moments of loneliness as you leave your past behind and moments of joy as you are enveloped in the warmth of a new community. There will be moments of discouragement when you realize how much there is to learn and moments of excitement when you master a new concept. It is a thrilling, moving journey and I wish you much luck and help from Heaven as you embark on this new way.

--- BOSTON: PROTECTING OUR KIDS

Dear Emuna,
Between Sandy Hook and the Boston Marathon, I just want to curl up in a little ball and hide. But mostly I want to protect my children. How can I do that?

Frightened Mom

Dear Frightened Mom,

Two words: You can’t. I’m not sure whether you’re referring to shielding your children from bad news or protecting them from physical harm. But either way the answer is the same: You can’t.

In both cases, all you can do is take reasonable precautions – and then pray, recognizing that all outcomes are in the Almighty’s hands.

I certainly don’t think we should sit our children (or ourselves) down in front of the evening news’ parade of murders, rapes and fires. But I don’t believe we can really prevent them from hearing the big stories. Even if we don’t have a television. Or internet. Or a radio…

There is always someone in the school yard who spills the beans. There is a cover story in a magazine at the grocery check-out counter. There is a television on in the background at the local sushi restaurant or at the mall when you are buying them new shoes. We can’t keep out the news and we need to be prepared to give our children answers and information in a reasonable and down-to-earth manner. If we aren’t hysterical, they won’t be either. But if we are…

And if we model trust in the Almighty, they will learn this as well.

As for keeping them from physical harm, as I told the mother whose son wants to enlist in the IDF, life has risks. There are reasonable risks accepted by all – driving, flying, going to work in tall office buildings and running in a city-wide marathon. To shield your child from all of life’s risks is not possible. Nor desirable. To try to shield him from most of life’s risks would probably destroy him.

Terrorist attacks shatter our illusions of control. But illusions are all they ever were. Let your children lead “normal,” healthy lives and pray to the Almighty, the only and ultimate Protector, to keep them safe.

Daily App Experiment #328 "Fish Out Of Water" - took a picture with the normal camera app then ran it through the #FisheyeToyCam app. I then used the #diptic app to create a version of the image using the fisheye image on the left side and the normal image on the right. Finally I took the fisheye image and the diptic image and layered the together using #interlacer. #appsperiment #daily_appsperiment
