My birthday is tomorrow, but my wife will be out of town. So she made me this cake today. I love that she did this. It was her first attempt at using foundant and I think it was harder than she thought it would be. My favorite part is that she created my 50mm lens on the camera and also my 100mm lens incase I needed to zoom in or get a macro photo.

Strobist: Vivitar 285hv at 1/4 power through softbox. It was positioned behind the cake - above the camera strap in the photo. I used two pieces of white poster board in front - directly under the camera - to help fill the shadows. Triggered with a Cactus V4.

My first taste of photography - 236/365
my photos
My freshman year of high school I was pulled into the photography class somehow. I'm not sure how or why it happened but I had fun with it. I didn't own a camera so the art teacher let me borrow his so I could take some photos. I only took 2 rolls worth of shots and this was one of mine from the first roll. The idea was to take a photo that showed one of your senses. This was my photo of taste. I asked my dad to help me and he just stuck out his tongue and I snapped this one off. It's not a great photo but that doesn't really matter. I'm not sure if my dad would pose like this again. He might. He enjoysmy photos so he just might help me out if I needed him for an assignment. Maybe I will have him pose for this shot again. This roll of film was my first and last roll of film I developed myself. That's right, the film was developed in the dark room. I was amazed it actually exposed properly. I tried to develop another roll and it turned out horribly. I also developed this photo. I have no clue where the negative is.

So this was my first real taste of photography. I didn't do anymore photography after this class. I ended up just getting into painting and drawing. I was never really that good but I somehow got into all the advanced classes. I think the teacher liked me so he just let me into the classes. No matter, I had lots of fun in those art classes and most of my friends were in there.

strobist info: flash camera left into a DIY beauty dish with a DIY white diffuser over it at 1/4 power.

Lick It!

Heres my first attempt at one of those HDR type things. Tried it first with photoshop, the effect was, well, pointless, didnt seem capable of bringing out all the colours. I'm sure this could have had a bit more twiddling but, well, its my first, used Photomatix (its printed all over the photo), Excellent bit of software!

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.

Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

To find out what you missed at the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon please do see our HackerLeague event page and blog post announcing the winners.

Special thanks to our spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon judges! And congratulations to the winners of the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon!

In one online community I hang out in, I asked folks what they wanted to see pictures of. Someone answered, "The inside of your refrigerator." So I took some photos (after cleaning it, which it desparately needed, so I appreciated the push), and finished with a shot of DJ on the fridge.

We printed this out to test a printer that a friend passed on to us. We'd tried Lexmark and Epson, neither could make a nice, smooth print of dense colors. This one, an HP, is perfect.

The Garden of Pha Daeng-Nang Ai
love image
The folklore: Pha Daeng Nang Ai is a tragic love triangle story of King Phadaeng, Princess Aikham, and the Naga Prince, Phangkhi. The story tells of Princess Aikham, the daughter of King Ek-Thita and Queen Sida of the ancient Khmer Empire. She fell in love with King Phadaeng of Phaphong city. Their secret love was never recognized, as King Phadaeng failed to win the rocket contest in Bun Bangfai, the rocket festival organized by the Khmer king. At the same time, the Naga Prince Phangkhi was deeply in love with Princess Aikham without her knowledge. During the rocket festival, he came in disguise as a young man to take a glimpse at her beauty. Later, he came in disguise as a white squirrel wearing a bell to attract her attention. Seeing the squirrel, Aikham wished to have it as her pet, but she ordered the court hunter to shoot it for her with a poisoned arrow. The squirrel died, but he made a wish that his meat be deliciously aromatic and plentiful for all to enjoy. So, Aikham shared the meat of the squirrel with everyone in her city, save for the widows as they had no husbands to work for the king's army. When the Naga King Suttho received the news of his son being killed by the Khmer hunter, he led the naga army to kill everyone in the Khmer kingdom, particularly those who had eaten the squirrel meat. For those who did not eat the meat, the Naga King left them alone. Phadaeng heard about this disaster and came to rescue his lover, Princess Aikham, but in vain. The Naga King threw his tail to wrap the princess and pull her down to live in the Badan, the naga city. Phadaeng ended his life. He became the ghost king and organized a ghost army to fight for Aikham in Badan. The battle went on and on until Indra came to stop the fight and told everyone involved to wait for the next Buddha, Phra Si-aan, to judge as to whom Princess Aikham belonged.

Welcome, Cards

How do you select cards for the Holidays you celebrate? How much thought do you invest in the choice? Do you prefer to send greetings that are funny, or those that reflect the deeper meaning of the observance? Do you create cards with photos of your family, or enclose a mini-newsletter to fill folks in on your adventures in the past twelve months? Is your choice more arbitrary than any of the above possibilities? Or, perhaps the price of postage has led you to give up cards altogether.

My wife and I make a selection from the internet, and we try to choose cards with a message of peace or world community. This year, we bought two designs from www.syracuseculturalworkers.com.

How about you?

still using the 70-200 IS lens to capture this image (read...too lazy to change it from last night...heh); only drawback is that it doesn't focus too closely for nice macro images (extension tubes needed for that)...otherwise, it's a keeper of a lens for sure! ;-)

The Tholos at the sanctuary of Athena Pronoia is a circular building that was constructed between 380 and 360 BC. It consisted of 20 Doric columns arranged with an exterior diameter of 14.76 meters, with 10 Corinthian columns in the interior.

The Tholos is located approximately a half a mile (800 m) from the main ruins at Delphi. Three of the Doric columns have been restored, making it the most popular site at Delphi for tourists to take photographs.

Vitruvius (vii, introduction) notes Theodorus of Samos as the architect of the Round Building which is at Delphi.

I used one picture for all the effects just for consistency for comparison. The title for each photo consists of the category of the effect and the name of the effect. Some effects would be better used on a different image. There are some effects also that appear to do the same thing in different effect categories.

Ezimba also has a Facebook app, Google Android app, and a free iPhone app. Please note that the free iPhone app puts a small logo on the edited image. You can buy the paid ezimba app and not have the logo.

Press release

Olympus Imaging Corporation (President: Masaharu Okubo) is pleased to announce the introduction of the new Olympus PEN E-PL1 Micro Four Thirds System interchangeable lens digital camera.

Positioned as the entry-level model of the PEN series, the Olympus PEN E-PL1 joins the widely acclaimed Olympus PEN E-P1 and E-P2 digital cameras to equip even the most inexperienced of photographers with the ability to take high quality images through its Live Guide interface.

Boasting a compact, light weight form, distinctive design and superior image quality, the new PEN E-PL1 is available in black or champagne gold and is scheduled to go on sale in Australia in March 2010. Pricing is yet to be announced.

Key Features:

• New Live Guide: Specially designed interface that allows for the intuitive adjustment and instant preview of image brightness, colour tone, background defocusing
• New dedicated Movie mode button: For instant access to movie recording in still shooting modes
• Go-anywhere portability: Light, compact body with built-in flash and built-in image stabilisation
• Six Art filters: Includes new Gentle Sepia for enhanced photographic creativity

The new Live Guide screen interface makes it simple for consumers accustomed to using point-and-shoot cameras to apply control over images by providing an intuitive way to adjust brightness, tone, background defocusing and other frequently set image parameters. Users can easily adjust the camera to create pictures to suit their individual style, without having to learn detailed SLR-class photographic techniques and terminology. The light, compact, Micro Four Thirds System design with a built-in flash assures a stress-free transition to a system-camera for ‘first-time’ interchangeable lens camera owners.

Significant new features include a dedicated Movie record button that instantly activates movie recording when the camera is in still shooting mode enabling simple switching between normal picture shooting and movie capture. The i-ENHANCE Picture mode (originally introduced on the PEN E-P2) takes pictures with exceptional clarity, helping to capture the full excitement of a moment. Six Art Filters are also available including a new Gentle Sepia filter that can be applied to movies as well as still-images. Just like its predecessors, the Olympus PEN E-PL1 is equipped with an accessory port that can be used to attach a high-definition VF-2 Live Viewfinder or the SEMA-1 Stereo Microphone Set.

At the heart of the camera, a 4/3-inch, 12.3-megapixel high speed Live MOS Sensor and TruePic V image processing engine provides image quality that rivals that of advanced digital SLR systems.

Features at a glance:
• 4/3-inch, 12.3-megapixel high-speed Live MOS image sensor and newly developed TruePic V image processing engine for high-quality, SLR-class imaging
• Large, easy-to-operate controls with a high degree of customisability
• i-ENHANCE Picture mode for enhanced clarity of main subject in photo
• In-camera image stabilisation that supports a wide range of lenses
• One-touch Enlarge button for easy detail confirmation in Live View
• Wide-area AF for easier framing and focusing
• Multi-exposure function with simultaneous LCD monitor display
• Supports high-quality VF-2 Live Viewfinder and SEMA-1 Stereo Microphone Set
• Choice of four aspect ratios to suit users' creative objectives and display format preferences
• HDMI output for high-quality image and movie playback
• Multi-Mix Slideshow playback with background music
• e-Portrait function for smooth rendering of skin texture
• MF Assist function for manual focusing with auto image magnification
• High-precision 324-zone evaluative metering system
• Proven dust reduction system for worry-free lens changes
• Continuous-tracking AF that locks onto subject and tracks movement in the frame
• Shadow Adjustment Technology to prevent blown highlights and blocked-in shadows

9 USD including a 14-42mm kit lens. It's due in March 2010
