This iPhone Background (640x960 wallpaper) is released under a Creative Commons Attribution License.
If you like this image, please leave a comment. Thanks!

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

About Patrick Hoesly
I’m a graphic illustrator, specializing in architectural illustrations and graphic design. I work with Architects, Interior Designers, and Landscape Architects, to help them visualize and sell their designs ...Or in other words... I make the fun/cool images!

Talmud Torah Building (1911) – entry

264 North Winooski Avenue, Burlington, Vermont USA • This brick four-square was commissioned in 1909 by the broad Jewish community of Burlington as the Hebrew Free School, to assure all children of Jewish faith a religious education, even if unable to pay. Frank Lyman Austin was selected as the architect.

When the "new" synagogue was built on North Prospect Street in the 1950s, the school was moved there. In 1952, the title was transferred to the Burlington Lodge of the Order of the Moose. They occupied it until 1993 when it was sold to the Vermont Legal Aid who remodeled the entrance somewhat.

Vermont Legal Aid provides free civil legal services to people throughout Vermont who are poor, elderly, or have disabilities and who would otherwise be denied justice or the necessities of life.

☞ For some dates & historical details, I am indebted to the Chittenden County Historical Society, and their fine, three volume set: Historic Guide to Burlington Neighborhoods: Vol. I, 1991; Vol. II, 1997; Vol. III, 2003. Weeks--The Hour of Prayer at Moti Mushid (The Pearl Mosque), Agra
canvas photo
I am always appreciative of views and comments; thank you for taking time to look.

This is a series of 11 images (oil on canvas). Edwin Lord Weeks (1849-1903), an Orientalist painter, was born in Massachusetts, the child of wealthy merchants. The placard at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond states he was a photographer, writer, explorer, collector and illustrator as well. He studied in France under Léon Bonnat. He made trips to Morocco, the Middle East and then India in 1882. Any number of videos featuring his works on India are on YouTube. The paintings depicted are always human with an eye to details. The painting “The Hour of Prayer at Moti Mushid (The Pearl Mosque), Agra” (ca 1888-1889) is large (perhaps 6’ x 3 1/2”) and is filled with amazing details of those gathered for prayer at the mosque. The detailed images show many aspects of this gathering: washing, reading, lounging. Any number of “things” are happening, yet no part detracts from another; all is well-integrated into a comprehensive whole. The architecture is integral to the work. The Moti Mushid, built 1654 in Agra, is an excellent example of Mughal architecture. His original works today can bring a price of more than a million dollars.

The original frame by Lockwood de Forest (1850-1932), another Orientalist, is made of wood with cast and carved ornament and is gilded. The framed painting is the final image in the series.

Istanbul at Night (NASA, International Space Station, 09/09/12)
earth image
Image by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center
A nighttime view of Istanbul, Turkey is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 32 crew member on the International Space Station. Most of Istanbul's Asian suburbs (right) appear in this night view from the space station, but only about half the area of the city on the European side (left) can be seen. The margins of the metropolitan area are clearly visible at night, more so than in daylight images. The Bosporus strait (also spelled Bosphorus) (center left) famously separates the two halves of the city, and links the small Sea of Marmara (and the Mediterranean Sea to its south) to the Black Sea (indistinguishable in this night view, top right). The strait is 31 kilometers long, most of which is visible in this view. The Bosporus is a very busy waterway, with larger ships passing to and from the Black Sea competing with numerous ferries that cross between the two halves of the city. Apart from the dark Sea of Marmara (lower margin of the image), the other large dark areas are all wooded hills which provide open spaces for the densely populated city of Istanbul -- one of the largest in Europe with 13.5 million inhabitants. The old city occupies the prominent point at the entrance to the strait. Major traffic arteries are the brighter lines crossing the metropolitan area, and also mark all the shorelines. The First Bosporus Bridge and Second Bridge (also known as the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge) can be seen spanning the strait. The brilliant lights of both international airports serving the region also stand out at lower left and lower right.

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.

Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

To find out what you missed at the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon please do see our HackerLeague event page and blog post announcing the winners.

Me, Nic Endo, and my Atari Teenage Riot poster autographed by all 3 members of the band.

CX KiDTRONiK's "KOTU" refers to his character, King Of The Universe, that he played on an episode of Thu Tran's TV show "Food Party". We also recently met Thu Tran, and got her autograph -- see www.flickr.com/photos/clintjcl/4746025083/ ... CX KiDTRONiK told me that Thu Tran was at the ATR show the day before in New York City. I asked Thu if she was a fan on the Food Party facebook page, and she said yes. It's a small world after all. It's really nice to know that people who make my favorite music are on one of my favorite TV shows ever, and that people that make my favorite TV shows love my favorite music!

BACKSTORY: OMG! Totally amazing show! We got to meet Alec Empire, Nic Endo, CX KiDTRONiK, and get all their autographs, and pictures with Nic Endo. AE drove us and John The Canadien. We were pretty drunk by the end of the show too -- even by the time we got back at 2:30AM, Carolyn blew a 0.03, John a 0.06, and Clint a 0.09. CX KiDTRONiK talked about Thu Tran. Me & John both separately called him King Of The Universe, and he talked to us both separately about playing KOTU in the awesome show Food Party. Alec Empire posed with a Hanson poster for AE. Nic Endo carries floppy discs and music equipment with her. I asked her what was on it, and she said, "A lot." Found cigarettes during the show too! SLACK!! One of the best concerts EVER!!! Ears still ringing the next day, everyone bruised and achy, walking hurts 36 hours later... Got to go on the stage during REVOLUTION ACTION, my favorite song ever! A shit ton of people were on the stage then! Alec took note of my shirt, then said, "Oh, right," as if he should have realized it was a Misfits shirt, and/or simply approves of t-shirts showing presidential assassinations, since one of their songs is called Death Of A President (D.I.Y.).

Though their methods are enshrouded in secrecy, magicians combine the art of performance with a variety of scientific disciplines, including math, physics and psychology, to create their dazzling effects and fascinating illusions.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science's new exhibition, Magic!, examines how science and magic are intertwined, tapping into our universal desire to know "How does that work?" Magic is the perfect subject to inspire people of all ages—especially kids—to learn about the science behind the magic, and the world around them.

Please note: photography is prohibited in the Magic exhibition during normal public hours. If you'd like to take part in our meetups, join the HMNS group for event announcements.

Children leaving gifts on the doorstep of a home on Christmas Eve - a 1912 Vintage Greeting Card Illustration. This image was scanned from my personal collection and the color restored (digitally remastered). I also retouched it to remove scratches, cracks, smudges and age spots. This is typically about a 3 hour process.
