January 7th - Russian Orthodox Christmas
christmas cards photo
I made this e-card for Christmas, but never get chance to load it to flickr.
I am not sure it suits Russian Christmas, - I think white colour is more appropriate for orthodox.
Never mind, - I hope you like my 'art' and merry Christmas to all orthodox Christians!

The featuring tree is Australian endemic Brachychiton acerifolius,
naturally it's called Flame Tree and it blooms around Xmas time (November-December in Brisbane).

Enjoy the slide show of this spectacular tree - 15 photos in my photostream.

I took this photograph on a walk around Cheney Lake in our neighborhood. After our recent couple of snow days, the snow looks nice and fresh again. We will probably set another weather record this Winter for smallest amount of snow fall. Last Winter, we set a record for the most amount of snow fall (143 inches). Strange weather times!

OK, "inside" this post of the snow scene, I wanted to include a photograph of Harry's replacement (if that's even possible!), a Grey Newfoundland Puppy who is 4 weeks old now. This is one of the first photographs from the Breeder in N. Carolina of Sailor with his eyes open. In four more weeks, Sailor will be flying to Anchorage to join our pack. Really looking forward to his arrival.

hackNY spring 2013 student hackathon

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.

Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

To find out what you missed at the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon please do see our HackerLeague event page and blog post announcing the winners.

Special thanks to our spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon judges! And congratulations to the winners of the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon!

Ethiopian veterans share Korean experience with U.S. Army instructors

By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Africa

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – U.S. Army Africa officers assigned to the Ethiopian Defense Command and Staff College (EDCSC), recently spent an afternoon with veterans of the Kagnew Battalion – an Ethiopian unit that fought alongside U.S. troops during the Korean War.

Meeting with members of the Ethiopians’ Korea War Veterans Association was the start of a friendship that will continue to grow, said Lt. Col Randy Torno, who helped organized a tour in early November of the veterans museum and memorial, tucked inside a park within the Ethiopian capital.

Torno and a team of U.S. Army officers teach at the EDCSC and mentor Ethiopian military instructors. The break from the classroom offered the U.S. Soldiers a glimpse at an often forgotten chapter in military history, Torno said.

“It’s an honor to meet the men who fought alongside our Soldiers in Korea,” Torno said. “Our discussions with the Korean War veterans will directly apply to the strategic coursework in the classroom.”

In 1951, the United Nations formed a coalition to fight against communist North Korean and Chinese forces on the Korean peninsula. The Kagnew Battalion was comprised of then-Emperor Haile Selassie’s personal body guards. During three years in combat, three Kagnew battalions served in Korea. Another arrived following the cease fire.

Ethiopian troops fought alongside the U.S. Army’s 32nd Infantry Regiment, under the 7th Infantry Division, taking part in hundreds of battles to include action in the Iron Triangle and the fight for Pork Chop Hill. During the war, 122 Ethiopian troops died and 526 were wounded in action.

“This was a fantastic opportunity to meet face to face with Ethiopian soldiers who were there on the ground, fighting as part of a coalition sixty years ago – here they are, telling us their personal stories,” said Lt. Col Brendt Vitale, who took part in the visit.
Yilma Belachew, a Kagnew battalion captain, said he was happy to see a group of American officers interested in the veterans’ association and was eager to hear of the U.S. Army Africa’s current mission to mentor Ethiopian officers in military strategy.

“It’s great because an old friend is always a good friend,” Belachew said. “So, I’m glad that Americans came to our country. I hope they will do a lot and build another part of history.”

Cleared for public release.

From the Warholian story

"Fear mongering, simply intensifies the likelihood of violence. If people are made to feel that they are in eminent danger or threatened, there is a fight or flight response. Based on that principle you are guaranteed a percentage of the responses are going to be violent.” says Colla.

Colla wants to be clear, he does not blame Sarah Palin for the Arizona shootings- what he blames is her vitriolic rhetoric that have become her character trademark.

“Whether or not Palin influenced Jared Lee Loughner, is rather beside the point. Her actions and her language have been consistently hyperbolic, manipulative and irresponsible. Palin gives speeches and the crowd tends to react to the tough-talk and rhetoric, so that’s what she continues doing it… That behavior is typical of people who participate in pageantry, but that’s not leadership. In light of the past weeks events it might be a good opportunity to examine what is effective or appropriate rhetoric and what we as a society deem unacceptable.”

By utilizing the two mediums monochrome digital photography and ink drawing in one collage, the desire to be able to reinforce and strengthen my ability to comprehend the complex visual language of ink and mark making has finally been intertwined.

Within the collage, the two subjects carefully merge together in order to form a greater positive space that acquire not just the physical presence of a greater dominated form, but seemingly overlapping one another that evoke a piercing sense of deduction and juxtaposition, I believe.

Short story. So in 2010, when I was a wee-baby photographer, I would submit requests to shoot shows all the time when bands I liked came through town. Most of the time I'd get no response. Sometimes I'd get a no... but here comes RyG and a resounding "yes."

Fast forward two years and I'm doing my monthly Google image search of my name just to see how my work is being used and seen, and I stumble upon this, for which there are no words: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uKtPVm6nb4

P.S. I allowed the band to do what they wished with these photos as long as I got attribution. It was the least I could do since I was just starting out trying to get national bands in my portfolio. You may notice he attribution also says "based on portraits". That's because it is actually two. I merged them together to match the painting here.

Royal Tern Preening

A Royal Tern (Sterna Maxima) delicately preening each of it's precious flight feathers, on the beach in front of Hotel Del Coronado.
(Their necks are extremely bright in direct sun. It took some post-processing work to kill most of the glare!)
