General Smuts inspecting a South African native labour unit in France
Image by National Library of Scotland
This rather formal scene is thought to have been captured by the war photographer John Warwick Brooke. This is one of the proportionally few images of Black South Africans involved in the war effort. Due to South Africa's domestic policies at the time, Black South Africans were not allowed to bear arms and were instead involved in supporting roles.

General Jan Christian Smuts (1870-1950), was born in Malmesbury, South Africa and enjoyed an active political and military career in South Africa. After the declaration of war by the British Empire, Smuts founded the African Defence Force. After accepting a position in the British War Cabinet in 1917, he played a vital role in establishing the RAF.

... Police Shoots Neighbors Dog 11-16 6pm
... "A Horrible, Horrible Sound" Says Neighbor Whose Dog Was Shot By Policeman 11-8 6pm
Thomasville, GA - A local police officer who shot his neighbor's dog has been placed on probation.

As we first reported last week, Thomasville Police Officer Andrew Childs shot his neighbor's unleashed dog on his Grady County property in September.

After reviewing the case, Thomasville Police Chief Ellis Jackson has imposed corrective and disciplinary action for Childs.

That action includes probationary status, remedial instruction and canine awareness training.

Glen Bierman's dog Ford was shot in the leg and may lose it.

Chief Jackson says he intends to provide Officer Childs with substantive training.

He says it will enhance Child's effectiveness as a member of the department and help rebuild his relationship with the community.

Thomasville, GA - A local police officer may face disciplinary action for shooting his neighbor's dog.

Thomasville's police chief is expected to decide what action to take against Officer Andrew Childs.

The dog Childs admits to shooting survived, but may lose a leg.

Glen Bierman used to go bike riding with his dog Ford.

On only three legs, the one and a half year old pit weimaraner mix can still hop on the platform at the front of the bike.

But Bierman has stopped taking Ford on rides because of his bad leg.

How did it happen?

Bierman says he was working in the woods near his Cairo home September 23rd.

"I heard these gunshots and I heard one shot, then I heard the second shot, then the dog just went crazy screaming. It was just a horrible, horrible sound," said Bierman.

Bierman says four more shots followed.

He found Ford limping down a trail bleeding.

Bierman says he confronted his neighbor, Thomasville Police Officer Andrew Childs, who told him he shot Ford because he thought he was a stray.

"His leg is destroyed, good chance of losing it," said Bierman.

An x-ray of Ford's leg shows it's being held together by pins and Bierman must clean the wound every day.

Thomasville Police Lieutenant Kathy Royal sent this letter to Bierman Saturday stating an internal investigation into the shooting has been finished.

She wrote, "I have found there to be sufficient evidence of policy violations as it relates to your complaint."

The file has been turned over to Thomasville's police chief for review and possible disciplinary action.

Bierman believes Childs should lose his job.

"He's a danger to people," said Bierman. "Someone that endangers the public like that I don't think should be working for the public," he said.

Assistant Thomasville Police Chief Troy Rich tells us the chief will make a decision within a week about Officer Childs, who is still working.

I don't mind jogging in the cold - it's the snow that I can't stand ...

Note: almost immediately after I uploaded this photo to Flickr, it was published in a Jan 16, 2011 blog titled "New York City: 4 Flickr photos by Ed Yourdon, It's nice here in the sunlight, but it gets awfully cold standing here at night... - (more detail..."

Note: this photo was published in an undated (Jan 16, 2011) Everyblock NYC zipcodes blog titled "10025."

*****************

This is the continuation of a photo-project that I began in the summer of 2008 (which you can see in this Flickr set), and continued throughout 2009 and 2010 (as shown in this Flickr set and this Flickr set): a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue. These are the people in my neighborhood, aka "peeps in the 'hood."

As I indicated when I first started this project, I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a zoom telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me. Sometimes I find an empty bench on a busy street corner, and just sit quietly for an hour, watching people hustling past on the other side of the street; they're almost always so busy listening to their iPod, or talking on their cellphone, or daydreaming about something, that they never look up and see me aiming my camera in their direction.

I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on, and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject. Indeed, some of my most interesting photos have been so-called "hip shots," where I don't even bother to raise the camera up to my eye; I just keep the zoom lens set to the maximum wide-angle aperture, point in the general direction of the subject, and take several shots. As long as I can keep the shutter speed fairly high (which sometimes requires a fairly high ISO setting), I can usually get some fairly crisp shots -- even if the subject is walking in one direction, and I'm walking in the other direction, while I'm snapping the photos.

With only a few exceptions, I've generally avoided photographing bums, drunks, crazies, and homeless people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. There have been a few opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. This is one example, and here is another example.

The other thing I've noticed, while carrying on this project for the past three years, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, far more people who are not so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them. They're all part of this big, crowded city; but for better or worse, there are an awful lot that you won't see in these Flickr sets of mine...

Photographers expand horizons in 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest 110311

By Tim Hipps
FMWRC Public Affairs

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Brenda Walker strolled upon “one of those right places at the right time” alongside East Fork Indian Creek River when she photographed “Morning Serenity” on Fort Campbell, Ky…

Retired Col. Richard Pugh shot three photographs of “Point Lobos,” just south of Monterey, Calif., and combined them into one image by working 15 minutes with Photoshop…

Staff Sgt. Pablo Piedra won a footrace with his wife to the bottom of a stairwell at Heidelberg Castle in Germany just before he looked up and photographed “9”…

…all three were winners in the 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest sponsored by the Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command.

There were 3,691 entries from around the world – 1,348 in Division I for active duty military personnel and 2,343 in Division II for other eligible MWR patrons. After Army garrisons selected their best entries, 664 Division I and 1,031 Division II photographs were forwarded for Department of the Army judging.

“There were many really excellent photos, which made the judges’ decisions a difficult task,” said Linda Ezernieks, who monitors the annual contest at Army MWR Headquarters in Alexandria. “Originality, creativity and technical quality were the main criteria in making final selections.”

Winners in each category – animals, digital darkroom, design elements, military life, monochrome, nature & landscapes, people, and still life – were posted on a website where Army Knowledge Online account-holders voted for their favorite photo in each division.

Walker’s “Morning Serenity” took first place in the nature and landscapes category and was voted the most popular photograph in Division II.

The subject of the photo is a fisherman wading and casting in the middle of East Fork Indian Creek River while the sun shines through the lush, green trees and casts a rainbow-like appearance off the steam hovering above the stream.

“It’s back on Fort Campbell,” Walker said. “I take my dog running back there early morning. It was really hot and the steam was rising and the rays were going through the trees. It was absolutely beautiful back there.

“I take my camera everywhere I go now.”

Walker left her business card on the windshield of a truck parked nearby and later learned the fisherman was Sgt. Randy Shorter of Fort Campbell.

About five years ago, Walker took some of her photographs to the MWR Custom Framing Shop at Fort Campbell, where she found out about the Army Photography Contest. She has produced prize-winning photos for the past three contests.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to get exposure, plus cash prizes,” said Walker, 48, a military family member. “I enjoy looking at everybody else’s work. It inspires me and motivates me to get out and get more interesting, different shots.”

What does Walker enjoy most about photography?

“Just being able to capture what I see through my eyes, my heart and my head,” she said. “A lot of it comes out through your emotion. It’s another form of art.”

Pugh, of Clarksville, Tenn., took first place in the Division II digital darkroom category with “The Owl,” second in design elements with “Blue Mosque,” and third in nature and landscapes with “Point Lobos.”

Pugh shot the high-tech looking photo of “The Owl” at Land Between The Lakes, a national recreation area located south of Paducah, Ky., and embellished it in Photoshop, as he did with “Blue Mosque,” a shot of the roof of a mosque in Istanbul, Turkey.

“I like this contest,” said Pugh, 65, who photographed winning entries in each of the past three years after serving 30 years in the Army. “It gives people a chance to show off something they did, which is great.”

Piedro, 31, an Army recruiter in Douglasville, Ga., is a former combat photographer. His “9” earned first-place honors in the Division I design elements category. He took third place in digital darkroom with a self-portrait called “Beast within Me” that would make a dandy Halloween poster.

“I got the idea when I was in the gym working out with my partner and a couple people came up to us and said: ‘You guys are lifting like beasts.’ The idea just popped into my head, so I got home, took the shot, and just started editing,” Piedro said. “That’s where that photo came from.”

The subject of the photo looks like a cross between a werewolf, a vampire and an Avatar, complete with fangs, dagger-like fingernails and alien ears – seemingly howling at the moon that looms behind a naked tree.

“The fangs, the ears, the eyes and the hands are all Photoshopped,” Piedro said. “And the stomach that’s concaved a little bit, that was done in Photoshop. For the background, I took certain parts of images from other photos, adjusted them, and made everything into one image.”

So what’s real?

“The body, and the face,” Piedro replied. “That’s it.

“If you look closely, the eyes are actually black and the pupils are red, so that’s been Photoshopped.”

Piedro, however, does not think of himself as a Photoshop expert.

“I actually don’t do too much Photoshop,” he said. “I try to keep my images as pure as possible. But every now and then, I get my creative side and I do a little bit of Photoshop – just trial and error, playing around.”

Piedro won two categories and received an honorable mention in the 2007 Army Photography Contest but missed the competition the past two years.

“I think it’s a great, great program,” he said. “It’s a great way to get the creative process of people that do see the world and travel the world by being in the military, and not even just as Soldiers, but supporting staff, civilians, wives.

“It’s a great way to get recognition for something that we love to do.”

As is often the case with photography, Piedro did not know exactly what he shot that day in the stairwell to the gardens at Heidelberg Castle – until he downloaded the photo.

“When I got home and I looked at, I was like: ‘That’s 9, yeah.’ And that’s where the title came from.”

Piedro cherishes photography’s uncanny ability of giving him the opportunity of “freezing a moment in time that only I can see and sharing that with others.”

Several other military photographers earned multiple places in the 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest.

Holly Swegle of Fort Hood, Texas, took first place in Division II monochrome for “Dress Shop,” second in animals for “Painted Birds” and third in people for “American Woman.”

Lt. Col. Mark Bonica of Fort Sam Houston, Texas, took second in Division I still life with “Reflections in Soap,” third in monochrome with “… and We All Fall Down” and received an honorable mention in military life with “Free Gift When You Join Today.”

Staff Sgt. Brandon Quarterman of Fort Bliss, Texas, won the Division I popular vote contest for “Reaching Perfection,” which topped the still life category.

Liam likes to look at pictures of babies, and kiss and hug the baby in Mommy's belly, but I'm not sure if he's ever met a real, live infant.

He better get used to it!

Nice Photo Library photos

Some cool photo library images:

NYC: Brooklyn Public Library - Central Library
photo library
The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is the fifth largest public library system in the United States. The main branch, the Central Library, is located next to Prospect Park, just off Grand Army Plaza, where Eastern Parkway and Flatbush Avenue intersect. Each year, more than 1.5 million people use the central library, which contains more than 1.5 million books, magazines, and multimedia materials.

The site for the Central Library was chosen in 1905 to replace the small outmoded structure on Montague Street. Foundations, however, were not laid until 1914 and construction dragged until 1937. Finally opened on February 1, 1941, the million neoclassic building, designed by Alfred Morton Githens and Francis Keally, resembles an open book, with the spine at the main entrance on the plaza, and the two wings running along the avenues. The stair terrace and concave entrance, adorned with impressive Art Deco reliefs by Thomas Hudson Jones and C. Paul Jennewin, were designed to reflect the ellipitcal configuration of the plaza.

The Central Library was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1997.

Zippo Heart (Color)

This heart is made of Zippos ... it took all but one in my collection. Don't take this as some sort of smoking promotion; for it is definitely not ... considering that I effectively quit smoking sometime early in 2006! The image is incredible.

Now, all I have to do is get them back into the correct boxes ...
