Testing my newly gained understanding of HDR and photoshop skills.

7-shot RAW HDR tonemapped via PhotoMatix 3, then imported into Photoshop for artifact correction. Final color balance tweaks, cropping and rotation in Lightroom.

This is another step forward to where I want to be, as far as techniques and workflow ability goes. The next step will be getting panorama tools setup correctly to shoot this as a ultra-high resolution panorama.

During post-processing, all 3Gb of RAM was taken up by Photoshop and Lightroom (mostly Photoshop). I will need a computer upgrade to be processing things this way when I get my 5D Mk II. (Along with monitor calibration hardware if I'm serious about selling prints).

Update

Someone had FlickrMailed me about the post processing on this photo. I'll share the technique here.

I read through StuckInCustom's excellent tutorial here - before I headed out into the field. The enlightenment moment for me is realizing that when I first started doing HDRs, I wanted to capture that magical glow in the scene, and typically I go for the overexposures. However, I've always neglected the underexposed frames and as a result I don't have the data to fix the blown out light sources.

I think this scene works, because the arches in the pac sci center, and the neon signs on top of Key Arena, is very readable and not blown out / blurry due to overexposure. If this scene had a body of water in front of it I would have shot the long exposure shots to capture the glow off the water, but longer exposures here just blow out the scene and doesn't give me any more usable data to work with.

Now that you understand my reasoning going into taking this picture, the rest of the technique / workflow:

* I shot a series of shots in manual mode, ISO50 on the 5D, on a tripod with mirror lockup and self-timer (did not have cable release).
* The shots were bought into Photomatix, combined and tone mapped for detail enchancement. I up the white and black points to spread the histogram out and make the scene brighter and I played with the smoothing of the luminosity until I got something I liked.
* I then tone map this into a 16 bit TIFF, and send this TIFF into Photoshop
* I exported the RAW files for the darkest and a medium exposure out of Lightroom into Photoshop. I should play with this as a smart object, but I didn't have a lot of time editing this.
* The exposures are stacked top to bottom: HDRed TIFF, darkest exposure, normal exposure. Note that despite careful use of tripod and mirror lockup the camera still shifts between shots. I used the auto-align feature (layers, autoalign) to correct for the camera movement. I thought it was pretty cool... (I'm a photoshop n00b).
* Mostly I just use a layer mask, 30% transparency brush to brush away the blown / artifacts from the neon to expose the lowest exposure (middle layer) to repair the neon signs.
* I did some blending of the lowest and median exposure layers to try to give a better result with the neons.
* The result is saved into a flattened TIFF and bought back into Lightroom.
* I applied a white balance correction on the *final* product. I shot this on RAW, tungsten balance and found it too warm for my liking, so I decreased the color temperature until I got something I liked.
* Cropped and rotated it so that the buildings are actually vertical. I need to buy a new bubble level :-)

That's it! :-)

Thanks for all the comments, guys!

Day 213 of 365

I had thought about doing this one several months ago, but never got around to it. By the time I did get around to thinking about it again I didn't have any light bulbs (which is why I did White Light the other day). I made sure to pick up some bulbs when I was at the grocery store tonight. I turned out better than I thought it would. Getting the three separate images to line up while I was shooting was a bit of a chore and I took about 80 shots just to get three good ones to fit together into this image.

For those who do not have flash in browser: air.oldstable.org/videos/everchanging.mp4

First attempt of reencoding a video, recorded with Nikon D5100, 1280x720 24fps HQ.
Lens: Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 AI-S, f/4, Hoya PL filter used.
I may publish compressed 20-minute video later on my website. Uncompressed source from camera is 1+ GB in size which is not acceptable.

Then converted to set of PNGs, then merged again into x264. I could have skipped the first step I think but I was planning to post-edit them, but in the end decided not to.
Command list follows:

### SHELL COMMANDS BEGIN
# decompose to frames, one per second.
# ~/tmp/sky.mov - file from camera
# will output files like sky000001.png ...
ffmpeg -i ~/tmp/sky.mov -r 1 -f image2 sky%06d.png

# now as wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FFmpeg#x264_Lossless suggests
# make a 2-pass encoding

# one
ffmpeg -f image2 -i sky%06d.png -an -vcodec libx264 -pass 1 -preset veryslow -threads 0 -r 25 -b 5000k -x264opts frameref=15:fast_pskip=0 -f rawvideo -y /dev/null

1/2 Scale Version of the 65 HP Case Steam Traction Engine (at the Buckley Old Engine Show) [BOES 4/9]

Isn’t it cute...?! But it's still quite powerful. (Perhaps 16 HP "on the belt" and 5 HP pulling power...???) This is a fully-working 1/2 scale version of the 65 HP Case steam traction engine as seen in the last photo. Some of these scale "model" versions have been recently-built by individual steam engine enthusiasts. Even on this one I see a mixture of original and modern parts (and some welding on the firebox).

Have you noticed -- men will work very hard at creating and maintaining machines that will do work for them. (It’s part of our “charm.”) Watch out when men create a machine that will itself create machines, however! (Reference: Cylons)

Taken at the annual Buckley Old Engine Show in Buckley, Michigan (on M-37 south of Traverse City). By the way, this is one of the best run outdoor events I’ve ever attended! And it's fun for the whole family. When was the last time you rode a train pulled by a real steam locomotive...?! And here's The Buckley Old Engine Show song written by Kim Carson-Colley! The video gives you a taste of a bit of what's there.

Quiz -- Find the Charlie Daniels impersonator (he was in the first photo of this batch, too).

Auroras on Jupiter, Saturn, and Io

Check out these image editor images:

Auroras on Jupiter, Saturn, and Io
image editor
This is a composite of three images showing auroras on astronomical bodies other than Earth.

The famous top image is the “spectacular NASA Hubble Space Telescope close-up view of an electric-blue aurora that is eerily glowing one half billion miles away on the giant planet Jupiter…Though the aurora resembles the same phenomenon that crowns Earth's polar regions, the Hubble image shows unique emissions from the magnetic "footprints" of three of Jupiter's largest moons. (These points are reached by following Jupiter's magnetic field from each satellite down to the planet).

“Auroral footprints can be seen in this image from Io (along the lefthand limb), Ganymede (near the center), and Europa (just below and to the right of Ganymede's auroral footprint). These emissions, produced by electric currents generated by the satellites, flow along Jupiter's magnetic field, bouncing in and out of the upper atmosphere. They are unlike anything seen on Earth.

“This ultraviolet image of Jupiter was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on November 26, 1998.”

The bottom left image is “the first image of Saturn's ultraviolet aurora taken by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in October 1998, when Saturn was a distance of 810 million miles (1.3 billion kilometers) from Earth…Saturn's auroral displays are caused by an energetic wind from the Sun that sweeps over the planet, much like the Earth's aurora that is occasionally seen in the nighttime sky. Unlike the Earth, Saturn's aurora is only seen in ultraviolet light that is invisible from the Earth's surface, hence can only be observed from space.”

The bottom right image contains an “eerie view of Jupiter's moon Io in eclipse (left) was acquired by NASA's Galileo spacecraft while the moon was in Jupiter's shadow. Gases above the satellite's surface produced a ghostly glow that could be seen at visible wavelengths (red, green, and violet). The vivid colors, caused by collisions between Io's atmospheric gases and energetic charged particles trapped in Jupiter's magnetic field, had not previously been observed. The green and red emissions are probably produced by mechanisms similar to those in Earth's polar regions that produce the aurora, or northern and southern lights. Bright blue glows mark the sites of dense plumes of volcanic vapor, and may be places where Io is electrically connected to Jupiter…The images were taken on May 31, 1998 at a range of 1.3 million kilometers (800,000 miles) by Galileo's onboard solid state imaging camera system during the spacecraft's 15th orbit of Jupiter.”

Portrait of a Woman
Nicolaes Maes (Dutch, 1634-1693)
Oil on canvas

The reputation of this picture has slipped somewhat since curator Roger Fry wrote in 1906 to his wife in England about the "superb Maes portrait of an old woman which I found here" (at a dealer's in New York). Since Fry favored artists such as Fra Angelico and Cézanne, his enthusiasm for this routine Dutch portrait of the 1660's is somewhat surprising. That year he recommended the purchase (for about 0,000) of Rembrandt's majestic

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection contains more than two million works of art from around the world. It opened its doors on February 20, 1872, housed in a building located at 681 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Under their guidance of John Taylor Johnston and George Palmer Putnam, the Met's holdings, initially consisting of a Roman stone sarcophagus and 174 mostly European paintings, quickly outgrew the available space. In 1873, occasioned by the Met's purchase of the Cesnola Collection of Cypriot antiquities, the museum decamped from Fifth Avenue and took up residence at the Douglas Mansion on West 14th Street. However, these new accommodations were temporary; after negotiations with the city of New York, the Met acquired land on the east side of Central Park, where it built its permanent home, a red-brick Gothic Revival stone "mausoleum" designed by American architects Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mold. As of 2006, the Met measures almost a quarter mile long and occupies more than two million square feet, more than 20 times the size of the original 1880 building.

In 2007, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was ranked #17 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1967. The interior was designated in 1977.

Prisoners from the Front
1866
Winslow Homer (1836-1910)
Oil on canvas; 24 x 38 in. (61 x 96.5 cm)

The material that Homer collected as an artist-correspondent during the Civil War provided the subjects for his first oil paintings. Homer had been an artist-correspondent for Harper's weekly, contributing illustrations based on his observations of camp life.

In 1866, one year after the war ended and four years after he reputedly began to paint in oil, Homer completed this picture, a work that established his reputation. Exhibited in 1867 in Paris, it represents an actual scene from the war in which a Union officer, Brigadier General Francis Channing Barlow (18341896) captured several Confederate officers on June 21, 1864 The fine, lithe figure of the general was modeled from another officer, lower in rank but more notable than Barlow in bearing and appearance, and to this figure the portrait head of the general was subsequently affxed. The differentiations in types and attitudes are conciously depicted with Homer's unfailing sharpness of vision and passionate veracity.. The background depicts the battlefield at Petersburg, Virginia. Infrared photography and numerous studies indicate that the painting underwent many changes in the course of completion.

The Lamentation
ca. 1582
Ludovico Carracci (Italian, Bolognese, 15551619)
Oil on canvas; 37 1/2 x 68 in. (95.3 x 172.7 cm)

Painted in about 1582, this astonishing picture is a landmark of the Carracci reform of painting. The figure of Christ, based on a posed model, has been painted with a directness and lack of idealization that sixteenth century critics found shocking. The figures of the Virgin, the three Maries, and Saint John are notably stylized by comparison with Christ and give the composition a jarring note. Experimentation with the means of representation rather than an abstract sense of harmony and beauty characterizes Ludovico's work at this stage. This innovative work belonged to Alessandro Tanari, papal treasurer in Bologna. At the time of his death in 1639 he owned eleven works by Ludovico.

Sitting in a flat in Barcelona, picked up this magazine, and there's Prem's photo of this massive tree. I visiting this tree in Bangalore just a couple weeks ago. And Prem had sent me this photo, asking for a waypoint.

Ok, now my brain is melting.

San Rafael Valley, Arizona: 1-27-06

The most delightful of valley views out this way. So far south in Arizona it is not far at all from the border with Mexico. Definitely I think of this as God's Country, when I'm not calling it "my" valley. This is the valley where the horse photos are (on my stream at the end of December). It was just as thrilling to climb up and around the winding primitive road this time and top out on this valley view. If you go about 1/8 mile behind my viewpoint here, you see the other landscape with mountains pictured in the previous image.

Aren't the bright colors wonderful? There were tons of these outside of my kitty's vet's office. I took quite a few pictures, but I think that this one turned out the best.

I'd assume that there are heavy gradients beyond Dinant requiring the double-heading of this freight service.
